I missed this game but was deff happy about the results.

Looks like the Leafs played well in front of Hallgren. He in turn, stayed calm and made the saves.

I wouldn't anoint this kid our savior yet. He has to string a bunch of good games together. But it's a good start.

On to our next opponent.

Go Leafs Go!

ShKallgren came through with a bit of luck but it's about time we got the hot. Rest of team was very good other than ShBooshkin hopping over the boards and making ShKeefe Shcurse

Funny thing is that all of Rielly/Boosh/Lily had their worst games in 3 or 4 and yet it looked so much better because we had competent goaltending.

Maybe statistically, but watching that game all 3, particularly Rielly and Liljegren looked a lot better. Whatever numbers people are digging up here, do not match the eye test. It starts maybe with the competent goaltending but it’s not the whole story

I mean all three have been really good lately so when I say it's their worst game, it was still pretty good for all three of them.

Goaltending may not be the whole story but with the types of chances we were giving up (dominating play, limiting HD chances), that .880 SV% could have easily been .850 or worse with the goals that were going in. The defense has been excellent.

It was a good game, but only one game.

Better goaltending but that's not hard
compared to recent play, ride him and see
what he has.

Some of that good game from the leafs
cuz Dallas was playing like the leafs have been
playing(crappy).Dallas first period was bad

If leafs play this good next game without
34 I think they should sit him till the team
fails.🤣

I thought particularly 2 things happened:

Rielly looked way less tentative, more engaged offensively, which is easily when he’s at his best

Liljegren had no glaring giveaways. Properly slotted again in the lineup

Bushking and Rielly, who knew?

Reason we had this emergency beauty in Kallgren, is because Marlies paid him 400k usd guaranteed, heck, that would get me coming over and checking out North America a lot faster than 75k AHL salary. Power to the MLSE, finally figured out in 2005 that St. John's is a cool place in some ways, but having your minor league team a mile away? uh, duh.

Shanahan and Babcock, wanted the Russian five? Well they got instead, the Swedish five. Better in light of present times imo.

Bunting....... Getting better by 2%, every game, like a good looking Marchand developing right in front of our faces. 5 million dollar a year player plus, for peanuts.

His agent must be moaning somewhere audibly.

Tanenbaum's gotta give this kid some kind of a treat or something. Its almost criminal how underpaid hie is for this year AND next.

Brodie for some reason, being released from Rielly, is showing off his skills and I mean showing off. Fun to watch. The guy has obviously worked his butt off on his edgework and all kinds of high end at speed tricky stuff.

Was hilarious to see Liljegren use the fake pass trick, although it almost backfired, but he made it through. Make me chuckle.

Gretzky had his entire team starting to try to play like him, he lifted them so much.

Why do we always win without Matthews?

I get Kapanen vibes from Mik. Skates like the wind, great PK but couldn't score on breakaway if his ass was on fire and streaky as hell. I won't miss him if he doesn't resign honestly. Just like I don't miss KK.
I would be fine moving him at or before the TDL if we add Motte/Appleton/Copp. Hell lets add all three! that would be one of the best third lines in hockey!

4 minutes to go in 3rd period.
3-0
Rookie goalie first nhl start
History could be made with shutout.
Kid made 32 saves at this point, 35 for the game
Hometown Crowd is excited and wants him to get the shutout
We need the win
What happens, we ice the puck 2 times
We score a lucky goal from 185 ft by a guy who cannot score from 3 feet 3 times in the game
But most importantly....
NOT ONE SHOT WAS BLOCKED BY A LEAF! No one put it on the line for the team or the kid!
Hmmmmm

He doesn't move the needle in the playoffs either. And as he and his agent want to get paid next year and he;ll want an increased role. Buh bye

Nice to know there may be something Kallgren. Obviously, he is not going to provide a shutout every game but if he can just give the team some decent games down the stretch it may give the other 2 goalies some time to bounce back.

Great game by the Leafs ... Played hard in front of a rookie goalie and upped their compete level knowing they were without the star centre.

This the level of work ethic and committment the Leafs should show and play at regulatory regardless who is in net or missing from the line-up.

Nice to see a solid effort after the dismal performance over the last 6 games against poor teams.

Lots of love understandably for Kallgren, but I think Lybushkin needs a bit of love for his play as well. He's been everything we needed for so long, and he was absolutely outstanding last night.

He plays a non-event brand of hockey, which is exactly what we need when we have him paired with a puck moving D-man. He has looked good on every pair he has been on, and seems to always have tight gaps for a guy that doesn't move overly well. His physicality and simplicity are exactly what this team has lacked for a long time.

It was a nice change of pace in net to see some competent goaltending again.

Making saves when needed, and looking calm and composed and in control doing it.

What are you on about?
Dallas didn't have a shot on goal in the last 6 minutes of the game.
According to the game log the leafs blocked one just before the Soup goal as well.

.... Are you sure you're watching the right game?

Kallgren giving me Reimer vibes
Yup I got the same vibes. Not overly athletic, but positionally sound. Has a strong ability to track pucks, but also not the best with his rebound control. When he does let those rebounds kick out directly in front of him he anchors himself really well to the posts and takes out the bottom 1/3rd of the net effectively. I got a lot of Reimer vibes last night, and I mentioned as such in the Kallgren thread. That said, I never really got that impression from him on the Marlies, and I do think Kallgren had a couple shaky moments last night that could be more attributed to nerves than a weak glove hand or poor rebound control.

I also have been openly curious how Reims has had such a great career given how poorly his rebound control is. His trapper hand is a little slow, but he also is quite content with letting pucks fall from his crest to the ice at times instead of bring in his trapper hand inward to eat it against his body. It leads to a ton of goal mouth scrambles that Reims seems to always have the upper hand on. I always found it weird how he never got proficient at that, but to his credit it hasn't held him back 1 bit. Again, that's just a testament to Reim's battle in the net. He's fine letting pucks drop down right in front of him because he knows he can bolt himself down and take away that bottom 1/3rd.

From an athletic profile they are almost spitting images of one another (6'03 200lbs) and there are some definite similarities in the way they battle within the blue paint. But like I said, last night was the first time I got that impression.
