I think we need to keep the JT-Bunting-Marner line intact and reunite Matthews and Nylander. The Marner line won't be as dynamic, but it will make us a deeper, more dangerous team offensively.

We have the 4th fewest PP opportunities this year despite being the 4th best puck possession team. The only teams with fewer, Columbus, Arizona, NY Islanders. ARZ is the worst puck possession team, CBJ is 30th, NYI is 16th. Doesn't seem right, not by the eye-test clearly or the stats.

This really scares me once again, we've been a bottom 5 team in getting power plays every year for the past 5 years and it translates to the playoffs as well. If you call the refs out, they purposely allow even more shit against you because instead of taking accountability, their egos get hurt. I don't know how you fix this lol. Them refusing to a call a trip last night was inexcusable, we see shit like that on a nightly basis. If the coach calls them out he gets fined and they screw over our team, same with the GM, it's like it's up to ownership to speak up about it. I can make a compilation video of just the last week of all the "missed calls"

I think you have to re-unite Matthews with those two, that line is potentially the best line in hockey, but it is a tough decision.

I also think Nylander works best as "the man" on his line and Tavares works well with grinders (everyone works well with Marner).

Ideally, I'd like to see Simmonds and Spezza get pushed to the bench and bring in a top 9LW who works hard (maybe Copp) and run 4 good lines.

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Copp - Tavares - Kase
Robertson - Kerfoot - Nylander
Engvall - Kampf - Mikheyev

Rielly - Russian Bear
Muzzin - Brodie/Brodie - Holl
Sandin - Holl/Muzzin - Sandin

So many positives to take away from last night, but I thought the broadcast summarized the most important part of that game perfectly. The in game adjustment to stretch the ice and get guys in behind their aggressive defense in the neutral zone was the reason we won that game.

So often we see the neutral zone get taken away from us by these top tier teams and we do absolutely nothing to mitigate that pressure. We continually try to force pucks in the middle of the ice where there is absolutely nothing there instead of implementing a tipped in stretch pass or taking the red line and dumping it in. Justin Bourne illustrated this perfectly in the first intermission. The second we implemented the stretch pass and put the pucks in behind their D, their D was forced to back off. The neutral zone magically started to open up, go figure. I know it sounds like common sense, but I am not sure I've seen this team make that sort of in game adjustment better than the one they made yesterday.

Carolina absolutely smothered us in the 1st, it wasn't even remotely close. But that adjustment in the 2nd period to stretch the ice backed off their D to a point where the game began to open up in the middle of the ice. Something that helped both offensively in generating chances, and more importantly defensively by being able to establish cleaner breakouts.

Freddy didn't need to make many massive saves, but when the Canes needed him to bail their team out after a couple defensive breakdowns, he was not up to the task. Eerily reminiscent of his time in TOR last season. He did make a couple big saves, but IMO Freddy really is only as good as the team in front of him.

That Canes team is no joke. I think they are the best team we've faced all year by far. They are the perfect blend of skill and will. Rod the bod has that team playing almost perfectly within a structure. Their commitment to the defensive end of the ice is so enviable. They truly are a treat to watch TBH, textbook hockey IMO. I am confident any goaltender would look good in that system, but no doubt Freddy is the most talented goaltender they've had recently. But still, in those moments of weakness when you need your tendy to make a save that the team probably doesn't deserve, Freddy is just not going to win those battles more than he loses them. It's what makes him a good goalie, but not elite. This was being exposed in TOR as we make 2-3 times more mistakes defensively than Carolina in any given game.

Great win, great commitment to the defense the last 2 games. Nothing but positives, except the too many men call. Holy f*** figure that out.

Best organized defensive effort I have noticed for months. Blocked shots, behind the puck security, collapsing on our goal. Nice effort by all. Thank goodness no Simmons.
Only bad part is post game Keefe. It was ok we didn't get too many shots. Goalie doesn’t get into the game......what bs. If you lose 3-2 he says we didn't get enough shots.....Yada yada
Good game for the players!

Of course we're bitter! Fred consistently fumbled in big moments and then basically quit on the team last year with that phantom injury. And it's annoying that he then goes on to have a bounceback season for Carolina.

But Fred is a fraud and a loser and we all know it. He won't come up big for Carolina when it matters.

Very nice deep team only complaint is Sandin-Lil prove they should be third pair and Holl sit.

Sure he fumbled, but the guys in front of him also fumbled as well but yep, keep on point fingers at Freddy. Im happy to see hes doing well.

Soooo - Keefe should play his team constantly on the PK without the best goal scorer in the world while starting his AHL 3rd string goaltender ... in order to win.
I swear - only the Leafs are able to give any logic to this insane abstrusity. :loony:

Yesh. The playoffs haven't even started and I already feel worn out. :silly:
Are you Sheldon Cooper? Sarcasm isn't high on your priority list.

A line that can take on heavy competition through defensive ability without a high level of offense is a shutdown line, which is almost universally seen as a 3rd line.
Don’t disagree on that, it’s more of my frustrated reaction to our ‘2nd line’ of JT- Nylander being unable to take advantage of a 1st and 3rd line that dominate 5 on 5 and hence should be making their lives a lot easier. I find it frustrating that those 2 guys need someone to help ‘fix’ them. Like wtf.

Not me. I hate everyone other than the Leafs. I don't wish anyone well who leaves the team, even if they were great here and leave on good terms. Fred was hardly likeable at his best in Toronto. He damn sure isn't likeable now with his half-ass comeback season in Raleigh after letting in softies in Game 7 for us every year.

Look, if you met me in real life you'd probably find me to be a nice dude. But when it comes to the Leafs I'm totally unreasonable, tribal, biased, and irrational. And I'm totally OK with that!

I was a fan of him until I watched that Prime series from last year. After watching that....f*** that guy. He quit on us last year. How anyone could watch that and still wish him well professionally is beyond me.

Källgren has stopped the shots he should stop and some that he shouldn't but the difference in the last 2 games is not the goalie, its the team that are getting their bodies and sticks in front of passes and shots. It's not a natural instinct for the team to play this way or for the coach to coach this way. It is however the way they should want to play. Giving up 35 and 36 shots sounds like they are not playing the right way but they are, we don't need a Veznia like goalie just a goalie who will stop the shots he should stop and a team that is willing to sacrifice their body and sticks to reduce high danger shots.
