So many positives to take away from last night, but I thought the broadcast summarized the most important part of that game perfectly. The in game adjustment to stretch the ice and get guys in behind their aggressive defense in the neutral zone was the reason we won that game.
So often we see the neutral zone get taken away from us by these top tier teams and we do absolutely nothing to mitigate that pressure. We continually try to force pucks in the middle of the ice where there is absolutely nothing there instead of implementing a tipped in stretch pass or taking the red line and dumping it in. Justin Bourne illustrated this perfectly in the first intermission. The second we implemented the stretch pass and put the pucks in behind their D, their D was forced to back off. The neutral zone magically started to open up, go figure. I know it sounds like common sense, but I am not sure I've seen this team make that sort of in game adjustment better than the one they made yesterday.
Carolina absolutely smothered us in the 1st, it wasn't even remotely close. But that adjustment in the 2nd period to stretch the ice backed off their D to a point where the game began to open up in the middle of the ice. Something that helped both offensively in generating chances, and more importantly defensively by being able to establish cleaner breakouts.
Freddy didn't need to make many massive saves, but when the Canes needed him to bail their team out after a couple defensive breakdowns, he was not up to the task. Eerily reminiscent of his time in TOR last season. He did make a couple big saves, but IMO Freddy really is only as good as the team in front of him.
That Canes team is no joke. I think they are the best team we've faced all year by far. They are the perfect blend of skill and will. Rod the bod has that team playing almost perfectly within a structure. Their commitment to the defensive end of the ice is so enviable. They truly are a treat to watch TBH, textbook hockey IMO. I am confident any goaltender would look good in that system, but no doubt Freddy is the most talented goaltender they've had recently. But still, in those moments of weakness when you need your tendy to make a save that the team probably doesn't deserve, Freddy is just not going to win those battles more than he loses them. It's what makes him a good goalie, but not elite. This was being exposed in TOR as we make 2-3 times more mistakes defensively than Carolina in any given game.
Great win, great commitment to the defense the last 2 games. Nothing but positives, except the too many men call. Holy f*** figure that out.
