Maple Leafs grant Islanders permission to speak to Brendan Shanahan (upd: released by Leafs)

Not sure why the Islanders want to hire the architect behind building a roster of playoff chokers and keeping said chokers for near a decade.

Shannahan is probably the best option for the Isles. They need to build a competent and deep front office. Lou's time here was just coasting off the bare bones front office that Snow put in place on the cheap under Wang. If he can do that, like he did in Toronto, then he'll be fine.

Hire a competent GM to handle the day to day running of the club and start building. It's a vital need. And of all the candidates, aside from maybe Jarmo, Shannahan is the one who I think can do that the best.

And if he wants some kind of a rebuild? Even better.

Did I miss the part where he was fired?

EDIT: Did not realize his contract was up at the end of June

He had too much grit and grind for Toronto.

I just pray they let Patrick Roy become the general manager along with keeping the coaching duties. Because he was also assistant GM in Colorado. It'd just be very entertaining in every aspect for the Islanders.

Shanahan is just an all around jerk and enjoys being one off the ice.

Going from Lou to Shanahan...I mean...did they not see what Shanahan did in Toronto? And did they not see that Lou walked away from the "Shanaplan"?
To be fair the Shanaplan was more successful than Lou’s plan in NY.

By what metric?

In terms of team revenue/valuation, pretty sure Toronto was already well ahead long before Shanny showed up.

On ice performance? Sure, more individual hardware and higher point totals for Toronto but which team got further in the postseason?

Shananan in Toronto: 11 seasons. 2 playoff series wins. 9 playoff series losses.

Lou in Long Island: 7 seasons. 6 playoff series wins. 5 playoff series losses.
Neither team got anywhere close to the ultimate goal but at least Toronto had more theoretical shots at it by making the playoffs in the first place.

How does Shanahan help with that goal exactly? He’s never done it before

The Toronto Front Office is well regarded, league wide. Its scouting and analytic staff are considered top rate.

The Isles under Lou have no front office, essentially. Their two AGMs are Lou's cap guy and Lou's son. That same son was in charge of Bridgeport, the Isles AHL team, this season. They had the worst season in AHL history.

I can not stress how much they need someone to come in and just flush this thing. And then rebuild not only the roster, but the front office as well.

I’ll never get how guys can fail horrifically at their jobs in this league and just go somewhere else. Front offices care way too much about what guys did on the ice. This is insane

You want to talk to guys and ask them what they've learned from their mistakes.

Fans love to get hyped about someone who hasn't made mistakes yet, and then the mistakes come learning on the job.

At this point no one is hiring Shanahan because of his playing experience, it's his Toronto experience.
