Maple Leafs grant Islanders permission to speak to Brendan Shanahan (upd: released by Leafs)

What is wrong with this league

How desperate do you have to be to be after Shanahan today

10 years ago I get it, today just pure desperation

If they want to rebuild it could make sense. Shanny was involved in bringing in some solid young talent but failed the final part of the rebuild. If he is more focused on the initial tear down he could do a good job.

Devils advocate.. Lou's plan didn't exactly work out for us either.

Weve tried nothing new and we are all out of ideas xD
Totally fair. Just seems like you are trading one set of bad ideas for another. Can't imagine Roy would stick around for the "new and improved" Shanaplan, if he does get hired in NY

This is an lol. Shanahan deserves a job somewhere in this league, but weird how this is news and "permission granted."

Roy apparently has three years left on his contract (classic Lou   )

We may still dump him, but I don't know... it sounds like Roy and Shanahan have buried the hatchet in recent years.

Well I think that part is because he is still under contract with the leafs, so the isles had to formally request the leafs organization first.

The fact that they did, and that the leafs allowed them to?

I would say that is big news.

Right I get it. But if the Isles decide to pass, do the Leafs keep him? Why not just can him now?

"Everyone can talk to him and if you want him, you can have him. If not, we will keep him."

Possible. But if Roy likes coaching at the NHL level, what is his alternative?

I dont think there is exactly a lineup of teams looking for his services.
I think he likes the idea of it and seeing his name in the headlines. I think, secretly (or not so secretly), he hates having to work with a GM. He would rather be Coach and GM of a franchise if he had his druthers, that way he wouldn't have to explain himself to anyone.

What is it with underperforming Leaf management that teams act like they are the most successful ones around? Dubas gets that absurd contract and job with Pittsburgh and now most likely Shanny gonna run the show in NYI

My understanding is Shanny's contract is up. As such - the Leaf's don't fire him - just not extend his contract. And by giving the Islanders permission to talk to him - that's essentially confirmation that he's not going to be extended.
