Cale Makar scores 30 goals in a season, first since Mike Green

Am I the only one who thinks that 30 goals for a d-man now days isn’t all that impressive? The way scoring has gone up and bunch of d-men putting up bunch points. Rookie d-man like Hutson has 62 points in 74 games. Two more d-men other than Makar have 20 goals etc… I think the real impressive thing would be if a d-man can score 50 goals one of this days

Personally I’m waiting until someone hits 300 points in a season before I’m impressed.

Crazy take. As mentioned, no-one since Green in 2008; 30 is 50 % more than 20 (lmao) and while Hutson has 57 assists he's at only 5 goals.

Come back if/when several dmen break 30 in the few coming years — much like how Matthews, McDavid and Pastrnak all scored 60+.

Where would you rank him if he was on Toronto’s roster, and would it also be AINEC?

Best on Toronto AINEC. How many dman can do what he does?

Even at the Four Nations Cup. They lost the one game that he wasn’t in. Undefeated with him in the lineup.

People keep discrediting him to pump up MacKinnon for some reason - Makar won the Conn Smythe, not MacKinnon.

Yeah but it just seems like there should be more d-men scoring 20 to 30 goals now days

If Matthews and Makar swapped contracts would you still take Cale for the playoffs?.

No, because that’s 4.5M you can add to Matthews. If they had the same cap hit I’d take Makar.

Colorado benefits by the fact dman are always paid less even though they play the most minutes. So making a dman the highest paid player in the league puts yourself in a disadvantage cap wise. Who knows though, Makar’s next contract he might be the highest paid player in the league.

Don’t think there’s a shortage of interest on Makar as a UFA.

I guess you should really look at how often it happens. And it doesn't happen often.

It's just honestly not that impressive of Makar when you see what Hughes and Hutson and Bouchard do from an overall game play perspective every game.

Its definitly more points with d-man these last years, but 30 goals is still very impressive, it has only happened 17 times in history
so its very rare.

maybe it "seems" like it should happen more often but the reality is that mike green is the only guy who's done it in the last 30 years. since 92-93 in fact.

the current high-scoring era started in 2017-18. in that time makar is the only defenseman to have scored 26+. and he's done it twice.

Just looking at the best goal scoring seasons by dmen, some very expected ones like orr, potvin, bourque, coffey. But never knew Hatcher was capable of so much goal scoring!
