Everyone (including myself) were surprised when Lightning spent their second round pick on Volkov, but now he is having quite a good AHL debut season, as he already recorded 19G+19A in 67 games for the Crunch.

I'm interested to hear how his all-around game looks in AHL.

That was what impressed me in the CHL-Russia series, his all-around game. He was killing penalties like a boss. There was one PK in particular that I remember (not sure which game) where he just kept the puck in opponents zone, creating scoring chances. It was something like 25 seconds left on PP when the possession finally changed.

Not having him at WJC was a significant loss for Russia, I have no doubt he would have made the roster.

How does tampa get all these players?

They tend to reach for guys who are projected to go later because reasons (usually too small or whatever the reason may be) but they have their own way of evaluating these guys. Mostly has to do with hockey iq and good skating.

How much time do you reckon Volkov gets in the NHL this year? Also, for anybody who's seen him play, how high is his ceiling? Wondering if at some point this guy can make 50-60 points at his prime in the NHL.

Depends which team he's playing for. Maybe wait until after this Karlsson nonsense until you ask this question.

TB is so deep it’s tough to gauge who gets called up and Who doesn’t. But I see Killorn like production from him in the show.

If TB moves out a lot of forward pieces/prospects in the Karlsson trade/due to the cap, will Volkov be ready for a full-time spot by 2019-2020? They may need him on an ELC.

I think you'd likely see him stay in Syracuse and a guy like Mitchell Stephens or Mathieu Joseph come up. I think if Callahan is the only on roster F moved out, you won't see any movement at all, but if Gourde or Johnson is moved out, I think those two (especially Joseph) would be likely to make it up before Volkov. I'd rather have him getting solid minutes in Syracuse over whatever middling time he'd get in Tampa.
