LW Arthur Kaliyev (2019, 33rd, LAK) Part 2

On the taxi squad now and might get into the lineup tonight after a strong AHL pre season.

Yeah, his NHL debut seems likely tonight, though only on the 4th line. I wouldn't expect anything from him, especially because he seems like the kind of guy who needs a lot of minutes and games to feel comfortable.

Might just need one chance on the power play though.

I imagine if they have him in on the 4th line they're at least going to get him on 2PP. They did the same for a much lesser offensive talent in Amadio.

Thought Madden would get a look first and than Arthur.

Hopefully he can at least show a blast from the point. What a rocket this guy has.

I'm surprised Kaliyev is the first prime prospect to play for the Kings and on the new jersey debut night of all nights!

Circumstances likely played a role. Turcotte and Byfield are injured and Frk and Luff (both wingers) aren't quite ready to go, so there was a need for a winger, likely explaining why Kaliyev got the nod over Madden.

Madden has played wing in pre-season and is being developed as a winger. They are all going to get a shot eventually. Can't wait to see 34 in retro tonight.

I still think Kaliyev needs some seasoning in the AHL, but I always think it's great for prospects to get a taste of the speed of the NHL so they know where they need to take their game to. I'm happy Kaliyev is getting to make his debut. I picked him up in a league and so I've followed him quite closely, always thought he took a lot of flak for a guy who just continues to score at every level. I think he'll be a solid player for the kings

My jinx worked. Actually, I meant it, but I thought to myself after typing it, "what if he scores and I look silly?", and decided that I wouldn't mind that at all and left it. I wouldn't expect anything more from him in this game, though. ;)

This kid baffles me. He is invisible for 90% of the game, and suddenly he scores. Every damn time. Even in the AHL preseason game I watched that's what happened.

Also, as others have said, I'm not sure why he got the call over Madden or Thomas, but can't argue with a goal in his debut.

To be fair the whole Kings team has been invisible. I mean the Kings top 4 D outside doughty have less than 100 games experience. I just didn’t expect it to be this brutal.

Kid can score. Nice to see him pop one.

I still worry greatly about the rest of his game, especially his compete, but maybe we find out his goal scoring outweighs all his other deficiencies enough to be a regular.

I think the boldfaced is totally fair. I think the "compete" concern is too abstract and overblown, though.

I know it's one game but no one that watched him last night would say he was a slug in that regard, he was hustling everywhere and got in on the forecheck on a night when many other Kings just decided they didn't like to play hockey. Hell he had a key forcing a turnover late that nearly turned into the game tying goal with a bang bang play with him, Kempe, and Vilardi. I guess this is all to say I trust his desire/effort, even if it's fair to question everything else clicking at a level that makes his offense a benefit and not just a Brandon Pirri.

He's a very likeable kid. I'm a Flyers fan and I'm rooting for him too. I am a big fan. His goal last night was great because he showed willingness to get dirty in the paint, which will go a long way with his coaches and teammates. I hope he stays up and continues to have success.

Some guys look lazy, others look frenetic. At the end of the day, you have to look past that, and see what they actually do on the ice.

Usually smaller guys look more energetic, larger ones look laidback.

To your point--I have heard the knocks on Kaliyev but he is far from lazy--he is just plodding and lacks major acceleration. What he lacks in foot speed he makes up with great hockey sense, a knack for getting to the right places, and an elite shot arsenal. He reminds me a lot of Thomas Vanek with a happy-go-lucky attitude and better work ethic.

It's because he's awkward as hell (personality wise) and has a lot of identifiable flaws to his game which even his most ardent supporters acknowledge. It's like watching the Big Bang Theory - sometimes cringe worthy but still satisfying. Definitely not the cool kid in the room and will never be captain material, but he's got a good attitude, works hard, is respectful, and doesn't piss people off. And his flaws are so pronounced that he's almost reached underdog status,-- you cheer him on so that others will be proved wrong.
