This is true. Zboril really was the consensus top dman available at 13. Leading up to the draft, consensus was that the top 3 dmen were in a tier above the rest. Zboril was seen as the best in that next tier down.

There was a lot of talk that the Bruins made a big push to move up to get Hanafin, but the deal didn’t come together.
If we play this game McAvoy fell all the way to 16th and should have been top 5 while carlo should have never been a 2nd round pick many have him as a redraft picked in the first round. Draft is pure luck but Donny could do better for sure he has a D grade on it .

No, he wasn't. That's simply not true and never was.

Here are twelve final rankings ahead of the 2015 NHL draft.

Just looking at Zboril and Chabot alone they were each ranked in the first round 10 times. (ESPN didn't have either ranked and we can throw out the Central Scouting International scouting list for obvious reasons.)

On those ten lists Chabot was ranked ahead of Zboril 7 out of 10 times.

But again, even if you reversed that Don Sweeney's entire job is to determine the best player to pick, and he got two teammates playing the same position dramatically wrong.

And this is why when people get all fussy about the 2015 draft, the situation we’re currently in, and where we should be going make it all that much more important to talk about.

I’ll go even further and state that this draft could be very similar in that Sweeney may need to trade some significant pieces like he did in 2015. For a reminder, this is the trade tree for Milan Lucic and Dougie Hamilton:

Lucic
- 1st 2015 13th OA - Zboril
- Traded Zboril + 3rd for Peeke
- Colin Miller (lost in 2017 expansion draft)
- Martin Jones
- Traded for Kuraly + 2016 1st (Frederic)

Hamilton
- 1st 2015 15th OA - Senyshyn
- Traded Senyshyn + 5th for Josh Brown + cond. 7th (Edwards)
- 2nd 2015 45th OA - Forsbacka Karlsson
- 2nd 2015 52nd OA - Lauzon (lost in 2021 expansion draft)

** players in bold still with organization **

So Lucic + Hamilton + 3rd + 5th became Frederic + Peeke + Edwards

This is why many here are terrified what happens when Coyle, Marchand, Carlo may be moved. I’m not so worried about what Sweeney gets in return, I’m more worried about his drafting and then asset management after that point.

Carolina really should’ve traded the 5th overall to Boston. Was it for all 3 Boston 1sts? Even if just 2: Canes probably pull Barzal & Connor there. Connor Chabot Barzal

I agree with you. if the rumors were true about the offer, I was surprised Francis didn't take the offer. the canes roster at the time was pretty beat. 2 staals, faulk, cam ward, skinner, a young Elias, khdobin, Riley Nash was on that team lol. not much else.

Zboril had more jam.

I didn’t mind the Zboril pick. They took him a little high compared to his rankings but he was considered the more complete player compared to Chabot and had a lot of the intangibles and physicality that Boston likes in their defensemen a la McAvoy.

And let’s not forget. Even as bad as Sweeney did in this draft and how much I crap on him about it. It pales in comparison to Chiarelli trading for Griffen Reinhart in exchange for basically Mathew Barzel. Either way this draft would have been a shit show for the B’s I guess.
