I'm 44 and I'm always looking for ways to improve my cardio off the ice. Running is favourite activity besides hockey.
I've ran 10k's for the past ten years but my times have never improved. I've always ran between 55 minutes to 1 hour depending on the route so I'm looking to improve on that.
I've trained with short burst intervals of 100m but I still favour the long runs as I feel I can breathe better and have more "legs" on the ice. Speed has always been my strength but lasting energy has always been my weakness.
Recently I've tried improving my vo2 max by running a total of (6) 700m intervals, which takes about 3-4 minutes per interval, with 3-4 minutes of rest in between.
I've trained these intervals for the past 2 months and I'm progressively improving every interval time, every workout, which is fantasitc.
However, when I played hockey again I was gassed, sluggish and slower!! Mind you it's only been 2 months of the 700m intervals training.
Should I just stick to the 10k runs or continue to improve on the 700m intervals?
I’m open to any other training recommendations.
Thanks for reading.
