Skating (straight line): Mailloux
Skating (east-west/edges): Slight Beaulieu
Skating (Backwards): Tie
Shot: Majorly Mailloux
Hitting: Mailloux
Aggression: Beaulieu
O-Instincs: Mailloux
D-Instincs: Beaulieu

Personally at the same age I like Mailloux better as I feel the holes in his game are easier to work on than the holes in Beaulieu's game. Both have/had attritbutes to be excited about.

Beaulieu was a better skater in every way, which is not a knock on Mailloux but it is why Nathan was being hyped as a potential top ten pick prior to the draft. I am not sure how you give Beaulieu Better defensive instincts as it is a weakness for both players and to assign an arbitrary value to each player and then attempt to split that hair seems a little far fetched.

Obviously this is just your opinion and I agree with some of it.

Beaulieu had no shot whatsoever

ridiculous comparison on that fact alone
That is not accurate as he hard a hard shot but didn't use it enough and wasn't good at getting it through traffic.

He had no ability to shoot during matches, which is all that matters. He was not a threat from the blueline.

You are splitting hairs. Who cares if he had a hard shot in practices?

He had a hard shot in game as well lol....how can you even truly believe what you are saying here? He just didn't process the game well and took too long to decide to shoot which consistently allowed defenders to get into shooting lanes.

I get what you are saying if you are just referring to his effectiveness but he absolutely could shoot a puck given time and space.

Mailloux has a bomb, Nate was just average.

Mailloux has a bomb by NHL standards there is no doubt about that and I wasn't denying that or saying that Beaulieu was remotely on his level. Beaulieu certainly had a harder shot than average but he was ineffective with it so I would agree that his shot's overall usefulness was pretty average. Just responding to the claim that Beaulieu didn't have a shot at all as anyone who watched him come up would remember the hype about him having a good shot and being a potential PP QB.

This reminds me of the people saying that Chiarot couldn't shoot when we acquired him even though he was known in Winnipeg to have the hardest clapper on the team.

Beaulieu had a decently hard shot, but similar to Subban, he had a ridiculously long windup. Probably why he had trouble getting it through traffic

The difference with the windup is Subban primarily used it on one timers so it really didn't matter in his case as the windup is entirely irrelevant on a one-T

You forgot their off ice behaviours...
Ironically - I would consider that Mailloux (having paid a brutal price publically) at such a young age learned his lesson 10 fold.. this incident might have turned him into a better pro, in that I highly doubt this kid is ever going to have off ice issues in the future.

Technically everyone is a reach at 5 if Smith and Carlsson is gone and they won't take Michkov.

I haven't seen one solid argument yet for Benson Leonard or Dvorsky to be considered valid selections at 5 but Reinbacher is a reach.
which is why Hugo will trade with Washington if he has no intention of drafting Michkov with the 5th. Reinbacher at 8th is a solid/Safe selection.

He will be gone by 8th.

Bold of you to take the player who’s career you haven’t seen over the player’s you have already seen.
Well put. The promise of the unknown future is infinitely better than the disappointment of the proven past.

As most here know, I have watched Mailloux's play with interest this past year in an attempt to gauge the progress of his development. As with Hutson (and for that matter, every prospect I have watched in my long life) there are holes in Mailloux's game. I have repeatedly referenced these deficiencies in my numerous post game analyses. In my opinion, if Mailloux can increase: his in-game conditioning; his strength on the ice and the rate at which he processes the game against superior opposition, he will be a mainstay on the defence for Montreal for the next decade or more. Those are big ifs. But such ifs apply to all prospects. No one has a crystal ball. We can only make reasonable projections. At this stage, based on Mailloux's current exhibited skill levels, it is not fanciful to project him reaching the upper levels of his potential. All in all, not a bad situation for a player taken at the bottom of the first round. Beaulieu comparison or otherwise.

That’s the problem with both player. They have nice tools but no toolbox to make it work
Too early to say in Mailloux's case.

Even if it turns out to be true, his overall package is so much better than Beaulieu (size+skating combo) that he will still be a fine NHLer IMO.

I'm comparing both at the same age, the toolbox is was just not there for both before coming in the NHL.

Beaulieu was a better skater then Mailloux

I agree with you but keep in mind this was said about Beaulieu as well , that he had the tools to at least be a 5-6 if he busted , until we saw how his brain processed the game at the nhl level...not the best...now he's still a 5-6 journeyman who's not particularly good at all because he still makes dumb plays lol. Actually I wouldn't even consider him a NHL defenseman

Obviously I prefer Mailloux size and offensive tools and upside than beaulieu's ever had but the brain is a very important part of hockey hopefully we can get staff in place to help the kid flesh out that part of the game

Beaulieu was the better skater up the ice. But I like Mailloux's fluidity. Not sure if Beaulieu had that, I just don't remember.

Sadly, that's the hardest thing to improve and that's what scares me the most with Mailloux
Right but on the flip side its usually something you can tell pretty quickly if a player is catching on and learning. So we will probably know sooner or later how he adapts.

Like beaulieu who really never ever improved on his hockey iQ , like ever

I liked Beaulieu especially his underrated toughness but he just kind of seemed like a meathead even by pro athlete standards. Hopefully Mailloux will not be that way as he goes through his pro career

Big difference between Beaulieu and Mailloux:

Beaulieu was always cocky and had multiple off ice problems

Mailloux had 1 really bad incident but his attitude have been perfect since he's been traded
