Line Combos: Line Combos: now, next year, future, etc

Camper, I was wondering when you'd comment on Clutz. If I didn't know any better I would almost say you didn't care for the acquisition. Any chance that's true?

Not that you would hate it though, because the concept of both he and Martin on the ice at the same time should unnerve the opposition. Cal's a free ranging missile, and Martin certainly picks his spots to step into players... I want the season to start tomorrow just to sample what their shifts will bring. Cry havoc and let loose the dogs of war.

Hope I am wrong ..Pointed Stick...but this may become a pim plagued squad which translates into the inability to roll 4 lines which is the Isles strength. Special teams on the ice too often will only decrease ice time...the forth line has always suffered. The recent playoff loss may have been overturned with additional mins played by the forth line....Pitts had no answer ..we are not talking major mins..just 2-4 more bringing ice totals to the 14 min area were ample to keep the Pens at bay. It didn't happen?
Pests can be odd creatures....they often need a guy to ride shotgun for them more than the softer top line stars. Cal much like Cook is a motivated hitter...problem is their games are similar......neither can defend their actions...so the havoc they cause is cleaned up by others.
The forth line of Martin/Ciz/McD will do special things again......but they have to be able to be on he ice..;)

Its the good old case of....."Never bring a knife to a gun fight"..... never pull out a pest when you need your Hammer!

One more time.....In a game of sheeny never pick your little brother on your squad.....big brother always has clean up little brothers messes.
So there is the possibility too much of something ends up ..... not being enough since the whole squad may not be utilized. Theres also the theory the more money you have in a player you play em....this can also be a problem.

Matt Cooke has a -14 CORSI and takes more penalties (marginally) than he draws.

Cal Clutterbuck has a -2.5 CORSI and draws more penalties than he takes.

Cooke is probably more talented. Clutterbuck is more intelligent.

I alluded to this in an earlier post, but as I think about it I don't think it would be such a bad idea (assuming Strome makes the team):

Strome and Clutterbuck rotate on RW between the 1st and 4th lines.

Say Strome plays a game on RW with Martin and Cizikas on the 4th line and the 1st line is PMB-JT-Clutterbuck. On the PP, Strome takes the RW slot on the 1st line. He'd still get 15+ minutes a night in this scenario. Maybe he gets some even strength shifts on the 1st line too.

Some games, depending on the opposition, Strome plays on the 1st line the whole game, and Clutterbuck goes down to the 4th line to form a wrecking crew.

So JT has protection against tougher rivals and Strome has the same protection on line 4? When we play softer teams, Strome and JT don't have to fear Moulson won't protect them?

I like the idea......but prefer balance, and Clutter and CMac and Martin can be spread throughout the roster as all three have varying levels of competent offense; Clutterbuck the best, CMac then Martin, naturally.

Yeah, I prefer balance too, so let's keep Martin and Clutterbuck separated. So I guess it's a 3 line rotation, but Cappy's smart enough to figure it out, right? :dunno:

The X factor, though.....what if Martin, CMac and Clutterbuck have chemistry? All three can score, and are decent puckhandlers?

Not exactly the Legion of Doom but maybe a brigade?

Cizikas is a pretty good offensive player and I think Martin has untapped offensive potential - I'd love to see Strome break into the league with a role like this. Spot duty on 2nd PP as well.

But those two are buzz-saws out there, anyone would have success on the wing.

When Cizikas and Martin played wing, like when Reasoner would dress, I really wanted Cappy to double-shift JT and play him with those two for a few shifts - this was when Moulson/Boyes were at the pinnacle of my annoyance (the last month of the season).

So either Nelson or Strome with Cizikas-Martin or McDonald-Martin or McDonald-Cizikas would be fine by me.

I love the way the Isles roster is shaping up. They have almost zero passengers, almost anyone can play in any situations. They can play a speed-game, transition-game, a physical game (getting there) and will (soon) have pure skill to match anyone.

One extra defenseman, maybe an upgrade in goal (especially by the playoffs) and the emergence of at least TWO of (Nelson or Strome) and (Reinhart or Mayfield or deHaan or Donovan) to play key roles.

Then, the team's set for a while.

i don't know why we don't just put moulson at RW, he gets a better shooting angle and he can't clear the puck at LW anyway.

i'd also really love to grab ian white and maybe another center, as i don't think regin is the answer and i want a fallback plan in case nelson doesn't win the spot this year. also hedberg as a backup wouldn't hurt :)

but as is:

Bailey - Tavares - Moulson
Bouchard - Nielsen - Okposo
Grabner - Nelson/Regin - Clutterbuck
Martin - Cizikas - McDonald
Regin, Boulton

MacDonald - Hamonic
Visnovsky - Strait
Hickey/Carkner - Donovan/De Haan
Carkner/Hickey

Nabokov
Poulin

You can get a Klesla on waivers every fall.....and he wouldn't be much of an upgrade over Donovan IMHO if you factor in he has to get playing time to complete his jedi training.

You CANNOT get s 30-40 goal scorer so easily that plays so well with JT save for one two week period where Bailey decided to show up.

Soft? Yes.....unless you introduce how much he is willing to take punishment beside the net and how successful he is in taking hits yet scoring more than Mark Parrish could. With more skill.

Sorry, but bad trade. We'll have a surplus of forwards next year if we succeed in making four lines roll with just ONE rookie. Two guys can bring in one defenseman if we're willing to deal a 30 goal scorer who is proven......if we're willing to part with a hot hand and a reliable 3rd liner, I say we could land a quality blueliner.

Flames fan here!

Question: I see that on Wikipedia, Josh Bailey is listed as a right wing and centre, Yahoo lists him as a left winger (although they never mention dual position I think), hockeydb lists him as a centre, and the Islanders' official website lists him as a centre as well, while a lot of the posts here on HFIslanders slot him on first or second line left wing.

Why is this the case?

Bailey is predominantly a LWer now. He started out at center and has played both RW/LW. He's shuffled around a lot over the years.
