and btw the "lose him for nothing" argument is a false one
NYR (every team) is obligated and certain to contribute one player
IF Strome is exposed and picked, it satisfies the org's obligation

Its not false, if you can't keep him then trade him. Why give him away for free? This chart explains it, ofcourse Day isnt here anymore.

If you dont protect him you have to trade him, it's silly to just let him go for nothing, thats poor asset management, he has value whether he is with this team or if he is traded for a young player, players or picks.

If the only reason we are protecting him is because of his trade value, then trade him now and protect someone who actually has a future here.

Sure if thats managements opinion, which i don't think it is, i think they like Strome, but don't just give him away thats nuts

Lias should have EARNED a chance with better players over Howden. I think the decision to put him in a hopeless situation with Brendan Smith and Greg McKegg will haunt this team. I’m not saying he would have excelled with better linemates immediately, but he at least could have made sense of a demotion if he wasn’t producing with fair opportunity. If I was him, I would’ve felt I never got a fair shot. He’s not coming back and hopefully we can bring a solid return in a trade.

Modified the above.

Seems more appropriate

Not sure where you found this but Jensen isn't exempt. He's UFA. And if he was still under control, he would not be exempt

Its from before the Skjei trade so its got some errors that don't relate to any of this for example Day isnt here anymore but the players you protect and leave are the same.

you don't protect strome because he has trade value. you TRADE strome because he has trade value, if you aren't planning to protect him. then you get an asset back (he could return a 1st with his numbers with panarin) and then free a spot up to protect someone else. and i'm not talking about one of the dumb expansion draft trades that other teams made to avoid losing a certain player. I'm talking about a straight up trade like you would do any year with a pending UFA that you aren't going to sign.

i understand and respect your point, just disagree
Would be glad to trade a re-signed Strome,
but if he stays, as stated, ok with exposing.
that's not free, if he is not lost, another guy is
Besides I am not as convinced, as others, that Seattle picks him over Hajek or Howden, or Lias/Gauthier, etc
I could protect 2 of Gauth, Lias, Lemiuex, expose Strome, and never doubt myself.

Strange chart,
It includes UFA Fs Fast, ORegan, Nieves*, Lettieri
but not UFA Fs Beleskey, Fogarty, McKegg, Haley, [ or G Berube]
Ebert (UFA) already signed overseas,
Jensen's rights expired months back whan he turned 27,
obvi, some RFAs may not be re-signed (PDG, Leedahl, Gropp, Crawley

*Nieves' group 6 status wasnt confirmed until he didnt play in summer games, but he wasn't invited

I would agree if someone else had EARNED it. Howden certainly didn’t. Nobody earned 3C on our roster, so there should’ve been a cycle of opportunity. Giving that opportunity, even if it resulted in failure, would have shown Lias that weak linemates and limited ice time weren’t the source of his demotion. I suspect he wanted equal opportunity on the roster to show his skill set. When he didn’t get that and others did, he bolted in frustration.

The chart was before the trade deadline but the people you protect are the same, leaves us with a spot for one of Lemieux, Howden or Gauthier as I don't think Fast is here past then. Id plug in Lemieux and call it a day.

Nobody knows who earned what, unless you are part of the coaching staff. Lias when he left showed a lot about his character and him tossing the medals did too, maybe he was sooking the whole time he was here, we don't know but the people that sent him down didn't do it because they like losing i can guarantee you that.

As fans, all we can do is analyze what was earned on game day. Sure, there other factors here, but Howden only had points in 3 of the first 18 games playing 15+minutes a night with terrible advanced metrics at both ends of the ice. When performance is that detrimental to a team, you give other players a look. Based on what we could analyze, excluding the practice and locker room situation, there was never a justification to the favoritism for Howden over Lias. I think that favoritism is the root of the departure. From a hockey standpoint, it wasn’t making sense. All I can do is analyze what I saw.

If the coach is asking a player to do certain things on the ice and one is doing that (howden) and the other is not (Lias) then the odds are that the former is going to be trusted more than the latter.

I know it’s been a while, but if anyone has enlightening clues on Howden’s on-ice positives to start last season, I’m open ears. He was a detriment to the team in every single aspect of the game. He improved slightly in the back half of the year.

He was out there trying to make the rest of the team look better.

Playing the long game. Making sure Seattle doesn't take him. He'll pick it up after the expansion draft.
