Yes, his first season was impressive for his age and I remember the optimism around here. Don't recall the 12 in 12 the next season, but if that's the case then he had 8 points in the following 24 games. Production dropped off even further last year when he started sulking and demanded a trade. For me, a steady regression and poor attitude is underwhelming. Point being, he has not shown anything in North America that would lead me to believe he could be an impactful 3rd line player.
My point is, go back to the moment that he was called up after having 12 in 12 (I think it was actually 12 in 15 the day he was recalled). To that point, he had absolutely showed production--not just production relative to his age--that would make a person think he could play on an NHL third line. The ability that he had shown was not in any way underwhelming.

It was the attitude that subsequently made him look like he had no shot. The second season when he went back down and only had eight points the rest of the way, that's when I'm talking about his attitude started to drag him down. And the rest is history.

Things started very promisingly in the AHL. That was the only thing I took issue with that you said. He DID show very well before he stopped playing hard. And I guess in the end, that's all that matters. I'm as critical of him as anyone, but what I saw the first 40 games he played in the AHL absolutely would indicate someone with the ability to play in the NHL. Unfortunately he didn't have the mental fortitude.

EDIT: Maybe I'm nitpicking. I guess I would say, "I haven't seen anything in the last season and a half that makes me think he can play a third line role in NA." Because the first season and a half I think he absolutely showed enough to remain optimistic about that.

It’s only preseason but he’s certainly off to an incredible start.

So, I just looked at the highlights today. 3 points on the power play. 1 point on a delayed penalty aka 6 on 5. And then a secondary assist where he was carrying the puck out of his own zone, basically got knocked over and his teammates recovered and eventually created an odd-man situation where they scored. Lias was not really a part of the offensive play itself.

So, yes, he had 5 points but the fact that all of his offensive plays happened with a ton of space on the PP in a preseason game in the SHL is important context. But one hopes it's a big confidence booster and something he can build off of.

I do find it interesting that Rangers twitter pushed this. Because I don't think it's meant to get the fanbase riled up. I think that would a poor decision based on the context. It only puts more pressure on NYR management to give him another shot one day. It seems like a transparent attempt to build his value.

He’s still younger than when Kreider made his full time NHL debut I believe

For reference, this where the following players were in their D+4:

Kuznetsov: KHL
Zuccarello: first season in SHL
Kreider: AHL (23 in 48) and KHL (3 in 23)
Hayes: senior year in college
Tlusty: AHL mostly

I think he is doing what we can expect from him. It's all we can ask for, really. Who knows what the Rangers have planned for him.

Ranger fans: Ugh, we suck on the powerplay.
Also Ranger fans: Lias only scores when his team has a man advantage. It doesn't mean anything

:sarcasm:

i really hope they can mend this relationship, it seriously would set us up better if we had someone who we thought could be our 2c or 3c depending on whether Chytil can step up or not. The best value possible is if Lias is in a Ranger jersey.

People on social media are both hilarious and pathetic wishing him to fail or being keyboard warriors and calling for his head.

An NHL prospect still developing at (soon to be) 22 that didn't set the league on fire right away? News at 11.....

Even if he becomes a solid bottom 6er this fanbase will never warm up to him. Reminds me of Greg "Donal Duck Temper" Jeffries who the Mets fans just never embraced (me included but I was like a 7-8 year old experiencing group think/mob mentality).

You all watch how quickly everyone changes their tunes if he scores a big GWG/OT goal in the playoffs for the Rangers. (I don't literally mean what I'm about to say and I hope you all realize this).."Eli Manning was trash until he had a great playoff run....Eli Manning was a one hit wonder..until he won his second Super Bowl and is a HOFer."

Well, I'd agree with your edit, I think you are getting a little bogged down in the details for some reason. Yes, he started off well. He was never able to translate that to the NHL and his play fell off in the AHL as well. In the context of, "he would help us answer our bottom six dilemma" i.e. this upcoming season, there's no recent body of work in North America to support that. He was given that opportunity and didn't stick. Still fairly young, I am hopeful that he takes the opportunity of this loan, produces and is willing to take another shot at it with the Rangers. If that bridge is burned, at least build some trade value back up.

I never envisioned him as a 2nd line center, but a third liner? For this team now, would be great as it would push the 3rd/4th line tweeners down creating depth.

I think some maturity both mentally and with hia game, he can be big for us

Lias should have been given a chance with better players over Howden. I think the decision to put him in a hopeless situation with Brendan Smith and Greg McKegg will haunt this team. I’m not saying he would have excelled with better linemates immediately, but he at least could have made sense of a demotion if he wasn’t producing with fair opportunity. If I was him, I would’ve felt I never got a fair shot. He’s not coming back and hopefully we can bring a solid return in a trade.

What I think is very obvious is that the organization really has been totally clueless about what it takes to develop young players. To some extent that can be explained by us not having a single 1st round pick for 4 years and the last kid before Lias that we developed from Europe with a high puck was Korpikoski.

If you draft a kid, maybe outside 1-2 overall, the first time frame to get solid contribution should be 4-5 years down the road. You set up a kid to fail when you rush him to the NHL right after the draft. The AHL is by all objective standards a horrible development league (really, this can’t be up for debate).

But why should our organization know better? One guy with experience. Two guys with no experience. One TV guy that played in the 70s. No meritocracy in any shape of form. I like Gorton, but the day only has 24 hours for him. He can’t do everything, and it’s also not like he has learned from anyone that was in touch with what is required in the modern game in Slats...

Ryan Strome for selke

IMO, he is still going to end up much better than Brett Howden. Give it some time, let him marinate. He was one of the bright spots during training camp/preseason last year. Does not excuse the piss-poor attitude, but I still think the organization unnecessarily jerked him around.

Use it as motivation, and get back here. Still a big fan, and think he will end up as an NHL player.

He looked good in preseason here then tripped over a cable and fell into depression

Everyone loves a good redemption arc but he is going to have a hard time ever living up to his draft selection and what he did/said about the organization.

Best case scenario he plays well and a rebuilding team like Detroit takes a flyer on him while giving us say a high 2nd round pick

My expectation/goal for Lias, when we drafted him, was a 3rd line center for next __ years. The best thing for the Rangers is if he turns it around and plays for this team down the road. That's what we all should hope for.

keyboard warriors lol. I might use that

So true with Eli. Funny how Giants fans defended him while the so many bashed the guy followed by the Giants fans knowing he done and those who bashed him defended him. Go figure.

I see him putting up PP points while basically standing still. We know he can do that already. Majority of his AHl points came in the same manner. He’s good around the net always has been.

We need to see him skating and making plays At a legit pro level. Something we know he can’t do
