Man, I thought the username was a play on tossed salad and the music genre (metal not medal)- I like his username that much more now lol
I don’t want Lias to fail . I originally was a staunch defender of the pick buying into the intangibles , competitiveness, his WJC results , the whole shebang . When I saw him skate however against NHL players even ones that are less skilled what stood out was his quickness . Even a plug like McKegg is quick and hard on the puck and can do his limited role at an NHL pace and can make some plays . LA has shown absolutely none of that . He can’t skate . Period . He’s a 5’11 shrimp that can’t skate . If he was a lumbering 6’4 who could power his way to the net diff story but he is not quick enough to get his shot off at this level or make a play . Period .

He was burned. He apparently defended LA through and through and as a Rangers fan it hurt him when he handled the demotion so poorly and then ghosted the team. I was in the same boat and angry too. But some ppl take longer to get over being dumped, you get better with time, maturity, and mostly experience lol
Unfortunately, I have more confidence that McIlrath will see more NHL games moving forward than Andersson.

Hrmm.... don't know about that. My money is Andersson will finish his career with more NHL games than Mcilrath.
Then again, that number might be "85", or something, so it's not a ringing endorsement. One can hope, I guess.
I only meant it from the sense that I could totally see Andersson not coming back. Or coming back, getting stuck in someone's AHL system, and then leaving for good. Whereas I'm sure McIlrath will pick up at least a handful more games played before he hangs them up.
Andersson, I'm just not sold he's committed to doing what it takes to actually make the NHL at this point.
Please tell me what he’s going to do to magically skate at an nhl level . Two elite centers who weren’t fleet of foot but had ridiculous puck skills and hands are Spezza 6’3 and Tavares 6’1 . Lias at 5’11 may have a stocky build but how many slow sub 6’ guys in the NHL that don’t do ANYTHING exceptionally well carve out a career in this NHL ??? I see a lotta of give him time but please tell me what’s going to magically have this kid skate better and faster ?? Gimme a break with the SEL who cares what points he puts up on a League he could score in at 17 . It’s obviously no longer a great bellwether for NHL success if he can’t even beat out anyone and play an effective 4th line role in the NHL or choose to earn a spot by AHL play . Clark and co blew the pick it happens . This kid everyone had wrong and I hope they learn WJC play isn’t the end all to who will succeed in the NHL .

Look, I don’t think even the most optimistic Andersson supporters would stake claim that Andersson is on the cusp of a major breakthrough, doesn’t have to make changes, and doesn’t have his work cut out for him in order to regain the momentum he lost this season.
But it’s the overstating aspect some people bring that makes it hard to not identify their position as feeling more agenda driven.
If you don’t think Andersson has the wheels or the commitment to be an NHL player, that makes sense. I can see where that perspective is coming from. There’s merit to that.
But then it’s almost like that’s not enough for some people. Then we start getting into those dreaded overstatements.
At 6’0, 200 pounds, Andersson is about average sized. We don’t have to try to turn him into a shrimp.
Andersson will never be the fastest skater in a league, but his skating isn’t some ungodly disaster either. The bigger problem is that he needs adjust his game, based on what he does and doesn’t do well, in order to find success. Just like shooters learn they aren’t going to beat NHL goalies from 15 feet out, some guys have to learn to get themselves into the right place when they aren’t blowing by defenders.
Andersson’s play in the AHL, and his production, were solid considering his age. The challenge is converting that to the NHL. But the inability to convert in the NHL is not inherently reflective of what he showed at the AHL level. It was good.
Again, one’s doubt about his ability as an NHL player can exist separately from how he performed as an AHL player. We don’t have to stretch the truth on the latter to make the point about the former.
It just starts to read like a tall tale after a while:
The guy I fought at the bar was 6’2, 220. I got him good.
I mean he was 6’4, 250. I knocked him down.
What I meant to he say is he was 6’6, 320. I curb stomped his ass, kissed his girl, and dared his linebacker buddies at the bar to try me, but they backed down.
Did I mention there was 4 of them, and I was only using my left hand?
The original point is valid. But then we keep adding on, as if it’s not enough to stand on its own. We REALLY want people to buy into the narrative. So we add. And we add again. And eventually we add so much that it almost takes on a life of its own.

Lias' Anderssons speed doesn't bother me. His board play, decision making, and ability to keep his feet moving does.
The guy seems to coast through most of his shifts. I guess it could be his inability to read the play makes him stop moving... Think.. and then go where he should. That jives with what Quinn said about being quicker from play to play.
But even if you're slow, if you're great on the boards it does t matter. Lias has issues there as well. Constantly knocked off the puck, unable to keep the play moving.
Honestly you can say a lot of the same things about kakko, except kakko is huge, shows flashes of brilliance, and is what...3 years younger?

He was interviewed by Aftonbladet yesterday. Didn’t comment on the situation with the Rangers.

-He said his foot was really bad. Couldn’t wear a shoe for a long period. Said it was tough when it didn’t get better.
-When asked about next season said “I don’t know, I am still under contract with NYR. They own my rights.”

Anderson will be a good prospect if he just gets back to north america and works for his spot on the roster. He should be looking at Kakko and the road he has taken, or Chytil, neither of those guys were handed anything and they continue to get better because of it. The worst thing that happened to Lias is he was drafted to high and his ego got the best of him imo.

every team blows high picks. We're just not used to having high picks, let alone first rounders so we expect them all to be great stars. As long as you keep getting the high picks you're bound to hit on a few of them, but nobody has a perfect record, not even Winnipeg.

after living through Jeff Brown, Michael Stewart and Jim Malone (... Jessiman at least played 2 NHL games ...) some of us don't take anything for granted,
my hopes for each guy, no matter the round (Fast,Hagelin,Prucha, Hank, Hollweg, Mottau, Boulton all 5th rd or later picks with decent NHL careers) , are optimistic but reserved ...
EDIT - omitted York, 6th round ~580 games, >320 pts, and big Kjell >800 games

Al Montoya, Dan Blackburn, Brendl, Lundmark, Malhotra, McIlrath all in the top 10.
That's why the VK pick is so huge. Missing two top 10 picks two years in a row would really really suck.
I'm just hoping down the line (2-3 years) VK can become a very valuable top 6 guy for this team and Lias can somewhat regain some value in the trade market
In the last 30 years, the Rangers have had 9 years, in which they choose top-10. So you are blaming many different administrations for this. Which seems pretty silly to do.
2 of those years, they were right on the cusp with picks at exactly 10. McIlrath and Dan Blackburn. Former qualifying as a miss, but hardly so on the latter. Yes, Motoya, Brendl & Lundmark were busts. But Sundstrom had a very solid career. We all know the Malhotra story. But what about Kakko? Kravstov? Heck, even Andersson's story has yet to be written.
You are also looking at it with the benefit of hindsight, which is very disingenuous. One must infer from your term of "whiffs" that you either believe that the prospects were fine but not brought up properly, which in turn stunted their careers. Or you believe that everyone at the time knew that it was the wrong pick, but the Rangers management at the time, drafted the player anyway. If it is the former, who do you believe the Rangers so completely mishandled? If it is the latter, who besides McIlrath and possibly Montoya, stands out to you?
