If you watch the video above and count the number of hits thrown or even just the body contacts or boxing out in the slot you realize why he, most likely, won't go anywhere near the first round. The exact same problem was visible at the WJC18 as well. He's one of the younger players so he has that going for him but the red flags are there. Some upside is there but at this point he's a gamble and quite the project.

I've watched quite a bit of him in Everett, as I always do. He's a gamble and the same can be said for just about any player in this draft. I'm willing to take the other side of that bet, only time will tell though

Agreed, but honestly, with quality coaching/teaching he’ll get at the next level, he’ll be taught how to defend properly, especially around the net and below the goal line, he already has very good instincts and sees the play before it happens, he just needs to get comfortable with angles, engaging physically and always being aware of who his man is around the net(when they go low to high) and understand inside position/picking up sticks etc…. Obvi he’ll never be a Shea Weber type bully in front of his net, but if he can just learn consistent inside positioning on his guy snd when in doubt pick up sticks anytime there’s a play around the net he’ll be fine.

Never thought first round, end of 2nd or 3rd rd project, but I really like him, he’s very proactive using his brain defensively reading what’s gonna happen rather than reactionary already in my viewings. Give him time I like him as a sleeper in the 2nd or 3rd. And by time I mean 4+Years from draft

Drafted in the second round, 42nd overall by the Everett Silvertips in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft, Owen Zellweger had a real breakout season this year. He went from a bit part in 2019-20 to one of the key members of the team. The Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta native put up two goals and 11 assists for 13 points in 11 games during this COVID shortened season. He also joined Team Canada for the IIHF Under-18 World Championships. Zellweger scored one goal and seven assists for eight points in seven tournament games. He helped Team Canada come home from Plano, Texas with the gold medal.

In 2019-20 Zellweger scored two goals and 10 assists for 12 points in 58 games. He also played for Team Canada Red at the Under-17 World Hockey Challenge. He put up two assists in five tournament games. In 2018-19 Zellweger played for Team Alberta at the Canada Winter Games. He put up one goal and one assist for two points in six games and helped the team to a bronze medal. Zellweger also made his WHL debut, getting in one game for the Silvertips. He put up 27 points in 35 games for Edmonton Prep.
