Least combined SOG in a period and/or game?

This is a difficult record to determine, as it appears the NHL doesn’t actually keep an official record of fewest shots in a period or game.

A good place to start would be the 5/8/00 game where New Jersey notoriously knocked the Leafs out of the playoffs with the Leafs taking only 6 shots. NJ had 26, so that’s a total of 32 which could plausibly be the record.

There was a world junior final around twenty years ago, I think it was Russia vs. Czech Republic and both teams played a neutral zone trap and took turns dumping the puck back and forth the entire game. It ended 0-0 and stayed 0-0 through overtime. I’m surprised both teams didn’t try dumping the puck in the shootout.

There's been a surprising amount of 0-0 ties in the NHL over the years. Now days of course it goes to a shootout.

The fewest total shots recorded in a game is 28, which occurred twice: MTL vs PHI (3-1) in 2009, and NYR vs NJD (2-0) in 2012. Between those two games, the fewest number of shots in a period was 5 in the 1st period of the MTL/PHI game, matching the 5 shots we saw in the 1st period yesterday. So there's a decent chance that the Oilers game last night tied the record @Cloned.

A couple interesting tidbits I came across:

1) The fewest number of shots by a winning team seems to be 9, which has occurred twice. What I found interesting is that this happened just a few months apart by the Maple Leafs and the Sharks in the 1998-19 season, and they both won by a score of 4-0.
2) Technically, the fewest number of shots recorded in a game came during G4 of the 88-89 SCF between Boston and Edmonton, with 25 total. But that's because the game was cut short due to a power outage.

Oilers are lowkey pretty good defensively on top of the best offensively, goalies are the weak link. I know Ken Holland gets so much crap and all, but give him some credit here.
Honestly since Ekholm has jumped on board they've been lights out. Prior to they did give up way too many grade A chances at times. Nurse was playing way too many minutes and taking on way more than he could handle. Probably because he was being paid like it. Ekholm has taken the load off of him shoulders. Dude is a rock back there. Basically reminds me of a Pronger type player. Someone EDM has needed desperately since, well, Pronger in 06. Been a long time. lol

Somehow I think the devils would be involved.

I'm also not surprised that LA is involved in such a game this year based on what I've seen from them. Its not a style that's easy to watch.
