This is why we are finally going on a deep playoff run, you just watch.

I already bet some dude on here if the Leafs make it out of the first round he's gotta leave the forum for a year, I bet he's starting to shake in his boots because this team is finally making its run this year.
I did that couple of years back (maybe it was 16/17) that the Leafs would make playoffs. Leafs made the playoffs and the other guy didn't honor his statement. He never left.

Very enjoyable game, can’t think of any Leaf’s that didn’t play at least a solid game last night. Campbell was excellent, he was tracking the puck and his anticipation was outstanding.

Beating another solid team, don't get to hear from that stooge Dangle about winning against a good team though, like we heard about losing to Calgary.

Huge special teams improvement will go a long way for a deep playoffs run, Prior to this year our PK was god awful, bottom 16 in the league every year, now its dramatically improved and helping us with hockey games

They showed the stats during the game, apparently not just us, but nobody has had special teams this good in a long time (other than Carolina last season). I don't remember exactly but they showed the numbers for the top 4 special teams since forever, one was NYI back in 78 or something, Carolina last season, can't remember who the 4th team was and then there were this years Leafs and IIRC, we were even on top of that list though not sure, I wasn't paying that close attention.

At any rate, you know the old saying - goaltending and special teams are crucial to playoff success, that is not just a random saying but it's absolutely true so with that in mind, I was thrilled to see that stat and thrilled to see Campbell have a fantastic game. If Campbell can give us a solid performance and our special teams don't fall off a cliff like last year, but keep rolling then we'll be a tough team to beat this spring.

I know PIT had a ton of shots on net and I don't know what the fancy stats say and I really don't care, that was a very good game we played tonight. Well done boys!

Hope Matthews isn't hurt too bad. And I don't want to sound uncaring when I way I'm glad it was his face that got hurt, not his wrist. Get well soon Auston!

Scotty Bowman once said (paraphrased) that if your PP and PK ranking add up to 10 or less, you are in good shape. Doesn't really happen often but right now we are at #1 PP + #6 PK = 7. Currently 3 teams are at 10 or less with Toronto and St. Louis at 7 and Carolina at 10.

The bench mark typically is > 100% when you add the two together. I think they are on an historical pace this season

Good game, just wanted to check in, are people ready to start seeing the Muzzin is the issue with the second pair, at least as much as Holl.

That goal against was just terrible defense from him and it's been the same all season.

Sandin already pinched on the rights side, but he inexplicably comes all the way across the ice to try to stand up Malkin. If Malkin recognized quicker all he had to do was lay the puck into open ice for a breakaway chance (sorry for the grainy screenshot)

But the play develops a bit slow so he has time to get back into decent poistion

But instead of pivoting as the puck goes to Malkin and being right in front of the play he does a full turn and somehow goes from being in good position in the high slot to standing in the corner 30 feet from the puck as his man bangs in a rebound within 3 seconds.

One of the best games they played all year. For those who hate Dreger, you can hate him a little more as he says Chiarot is Leafs' #1 target. Braun also came up.

Great breakdown. Exactly what I noticed as well.

Not the best pinch by sandin but that display of "defence" from muzzin after was atrocious.

Out of position and in no mans land the entire sequence. Collided with sandin right before the goal and both were nowhere near the net

I'm just pointing out something Scotty said (his benchmark) decades ago that I have always watched. I've played around a lot with decades worth of the most basic data to see if any stand out as predictors of teams making final four etc. Very little stands out but I suspect the PP/PK thing is almost as basic as puck possession. A game only has 3 states - ES, PP and PK.....If you're good at all 3, well your odds are certainly better.

I think I prefer Scotty's measure as half the league has a PK at 80% + and half the league has a PP at 20% +. Obviously it doesn't mean half the league will be at 100% but likely a lot more than would meet Scotty's measure.

No doubt there.
IMO this team seems to be playing at a higher level than they have in the past. I’m not concerned as I was about them competing in the playoffs. They’ll go as far as the goaltending will take them.

Big win and this is the style of game the Leafs are built for .. Wide open, end to end rushes, exchanging chances, skill on skill.

Unfortunately this while highly entertaining in regular season style play only and the playoffs are harder hitting, tighter checking and lower scoring.

Auston Matthews is not going to have multiple breakaways in the same game etc.

I’m not one to complain about the refs but they sure gave the Pens every opportunity last night. Ice seemed tilted in that regard.

I think we know full well what goaltending can do to you. This isn't to excuse the offense just that Fred's biggest achilles heel was timing. I will settle for timely goaltending without back breakers and the offense stepping up. I am most happy though with improvements away from the puck (to date).

Love how the Leafs have devised a brilliant solution to getting screwed on penalty calls by the refs: make the PK just as dangerous as the PP!
