I'm a diehard Leaf fan so they're always worth my time. That's why I've watched every game I can every year, even those decades when there was no hope of anything good happening.

Bizarro is right. I feel like I should stop even trying to guess what's going on and just sit back and see what happens.

Anything's possible.

Yeah who knows, maybe that's the answer. Goalies are voodoo so who the hell knows?
Great takes !
when I coached hockey .., I never ever spoke to our goalies other than if they wanted to talk to me .
To me , I took the position that so long as they stop the puck , I would leave them alone , no matter what .
Funny , when I was a player , all I wanted to do and did was piss them off as much as I could in front of them …

i will say i was going to shut off the game at 7-2. but that was unsettling. but on the flip side it was nice to watch the wings get pissed get hope get cocky then lose everything again. all in one game

What does this mean and how is it accomplished? Feels like the team is heavily limiting opportunities against and the fans have been fine towards them with their limited opportunities

18th overall in expected goals against since Dec 1 says otherwise.

Really? I thought that's what they said on the broadcast on Thursday but maybe I misheard. That's great is you're right, link?

Expected goals are all fine and dandy but do you need to be told the Wings scored 7 goals on 2 expected goals to know that our goalies were absolute shit last night ??

Being a fan of most sports and especially Hockey for over 60 years , I just don’t get it , when these particular numbers and stats are thrown around . I get certain stats and even most of what is bandied about currently , but these expected numbers are absolutely ridiculous…

Just go since the start of January as thats when our goaltending struggles started:

Shots Against: 9th fewest in the league
Scoring Chances Against: 2nd fewest in the league
High Danger Chances Against: Fewest in the league
Expected Goals Against: 4th fewest in the league

Overall team save%: 27th in the league

If the goaltending straightens out, this team is an absolute juggernaut led by the best player in the league leading the best line in the league.

I'm a little worried about Tavares though as he actually looks like covid hurt him long term. He was really cooking before it hit the team.

I’m not sure if anyone has commented to this fact, but the Matthews line only averaged about 14 1/2 minutes. It seems that the coach was using this game as a chance to get the second and third line going, feeling confident that they would win. And it seems like he was sticking with it… Despite the horrible goaltending. It worked out for the third line, the second line not so much.

*Tavares not so much

I don't know what happened to him and Soup, they started off the year playing incredible hockey and have done a 180.

I pointed this out a couple weeks before it he really went South. He looks tired. He’s never played this much. Give Petr the net for 3 weeks.

I’m still not convinced he will bounce back though…

Me neither but I'm willing to try anything at this point

If it is post Covid, or long Covid doldrums… I don’t know what the answer is. But I hope he is able to bounce one off of someone’s ass or something, to get the monkey off his back… Because it appears to be affecting him.Same thing goes with Jack… If there was enough room for a puck to squeak by yesterday, it did. He wasn’t good, but the puck had eyes as well.

I'll preface what I am about to say with the fact that I was not able to watch the game live, but I recorded the game and watched it knowing what the outcome was. So I really didn't have the emotional roller coaster that I'd normally face in a game like this.

I will say I was infuriated at the box score last night and could not believe how this game went from 7-2 to a nail biter. I just couldn't believe what I was looking at. But now that I've watched the game in full, I am actually proud of the group for battling through that adversity in the 3rd. I saw a quote from Keefe on twitter last night echoing that sentiment and I wanted to puke, but I actually get where he was coming from now. Jack was absolutely horrific. 4 of the 5 goals against just cannot go in. I think the only goal I give him a pass on is the 4th goal against (Rowney). The game was unnecessarily tighter than it needed to be because of Jack alone. I don't even think we defended all that poorly. I didn't like our battle at the top of the crease on a handful of goals against, but again we need a save. Mrazek was thrown into a terrible situation, and has 2 deflected pucks go past him. Not going to be too hard on him.

That top line was outstanding, and has been ever since Bunts made his way back onto that line. As poor as L2 has been, I really think they just ahve to figure it out on their own. It will eventually come. This exact dry spell happened with Willy and JT last year, and then they ended the year as or best line arguably. I am not worried. But we cannot break that top line up. It's as dynamic as it's ever been in the Matthews/Marner era.

I thought Robertson looked as good as he's ever looked in the NHL by a long shot. He was all over the puck, and had some outstanding looks. Shocked he didn't score. If he can continue that play he needs to stay up IMO. Was not a fan of the idea of him on the 4th line before the game. Thought he would be ineffective, but that was a complete miss on my part. He was excellent.

Lybushkin continues to impress me. Not on for a single goal against which is really not a shock. He is the only defender that seems to know how to clear the top of the crease. Which was the only offence DET had all game.

Complete shit show of a game, but the better team won IMO. They will not all be Mona Lisa's, but this game is realistically a 7-3 final score with average goaltending on both sides of the ice IMO.

Somebody forgot to tell the Wings the recipe to beating the Leafs. Last's night's game plan was not it. As bad as Soup was, the Red Wings were worse. Griess and Ned kind of reminded me of Dave Reese and Marner looked like Sittler in the 2nd

actually Campbell was pretty comfortably the worst player in the game last night. It might look like hey both teams had bad goaltending, and they did, but our goalies allowed 7 goals on just 28% of the scoring chances in the game. Campbell was incredibly leaky

What a weird game for Liljegren as well. Had a 58 CF% and had over 75% of the scoring chances for 5 on 5 when he was on the ice, but the actual goals for percentage was 37% and was -2.

Actually thought he was pretty good with Rielly.
Same thought, albeit a few stumbles as did Morgs, as did a few others, not all Dmen either. The 1 line and the 3 line marked A- and B- on the night the 4 line gets a C and the 2 line gets a D-

I guess it really is a Leafs centered world though when all the talk is about us and Florida looks in even worse shape though.

No kidding. Leafs win 10-7 while Florida loses 3 straight (while allowing 16 goals) and all other fans can talk about it how the Leafs can't keep the puck out of the net so they won't be able to compete with a powerhouse offense like Florida in the playoffs.
