I liked that rise out of her in the first intermission. She has spunk, and she makes sense too.

Not a member of the Old-Boys' Club, I guess.
She had her opinion and was certainly passionate about it and entitled to it. I agree with her to a degree but not in this instance.

Bieksa had it spot on. He said pretty much what I thought when I had first seen it. It had nothing to do with a skill play but digging the goalie in a 5-0 game. He deserved a cross check there and that should have been the end of it. I wish the Leafs defense brought more of that when the goalie gets chopped.

Beagle should have let up once he saw who he was engaged with. Looked like he lost control for a minute, I’m sure he regrets it.

Simmonds played the enforcer role perfectly tonight, IMO.

It's such a bad look on some people here when they get all bent out of shape over either of these things happening:

a) a woman expresses a hockey opinion
b) a non-NHLer or non-former NHLer expresses a hockey opinion

Jennifer Botteril is both, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with the position she took on the broadcast. She is fully entitled to that opinion and the mere fact that Bieksa played in the NHL doesn't make his opinion any more valid here than hers.
100% it does. 😂
She had an opinion that she’s entitled to but it’s just an opinion. Bieska spoke from experience, Shirley you can see the difference.

Hockey, actually nhl hockey is the only professional sport aside from combat sports where you can throw punches at your opposition and then stay in the game. Your opinion is dated stupid and incorrect.
It’s also the only professional team sport in North America where you don’t see players:

- dance like cocky idiots after they score a goal
- stand over opponents and flex their biceps after they’ve drilled an opponent with a hit
- toss their hockey stick and stare at the opposing goalie when they score a goal

Do I think fighting should be as common as it is in the nhl? No

Do I think fighting goes overboard (like this incident)? Yes

Do I think dirty players and cocky players needing to know they may get rag dolled for being stupid is a good thing? Yup

yes, he had a stretch last year where he played really well too, i hope he can continue cuz i like the motivated, hitting, fighting version. the other version is, well, not good lol.

I think you are referring to the stretch that ended when his wrist was hurt. He played himself onto some time on the second line too.

Didn't play the same when he cam back.

They have already reduced fighting to about a quarter of the amount of fights that there were before the 04/05 lockout. They fight with visors on now, where they can't remove their helmet because of these groundbreaking new rules. It would be like trying to solve a rubix cube, trying to punch someone in the face without breaking their knuckles on the visor or helmet which take up most of the punching surface. Those are just a couple, there are several fun things they've added to make hockey less entertaining. Men's hockey does have fighting in it and I hate to be the bearer of bad news Jennifer Botterill, but a lot of people are actually entertained by it. There used to be in depth websites before the movie concussion with Chris Rock's nemesis came out and fighting reduced, those sites probably challenged HF for popularity at their peak.

Don't lose viewership because females lack testosterone and prefer that everyone would sing kumbaya and shake hands after each game. There are two things that fans always stand up for at the hockey game, a goal and a fight.

So Jen wants to turn the NHL into Swan Lake ballet? She is literally implying there should be no aggression in the sport, like no fighting...if you take fighting away, you'll just get all kinds of dirty plays and dirty stickwork...I guess it's ok for her since she's used to wearing a cage when she played hockey.

Look at where She came from. Not much fighting there, or much rough stuff either. Not a surprise she is a pacifist with her hockey views.

If the appetite was there to do so they absolutely could remove violent behavior from the game. The League clearly doesn't want to. And I'm not going to say whether that is right or wrong necessarily, because I think a certain element of fighting is good for the game. The cynic in me however says their motivations are purely financial. If they could remove it and not negatively impact the marketability/interest of the sport, I am confident they would. The problem becomes that, even still, a lot of fans find those things exciting and entertaining.

I can't see much will from the NHL to remove fighting from the game. It is one unique element that separates it from the other major sports in North America.

There is the odd bench clearer in MLB but not that I can recall a real one on one fight like Hockey.

Can't see Abruzzese being anywhere close to the level we need in the playoffs

You got that from a guy playing his first game on the 4th line? Who obviously (to me) had the jitters. What did he play 5 minutes?

Sorry I have to reserve judgment on this one until the kid has had some time yet.

Thought Nylander has played much better the last two games. Even attempted to block a shot😂
Keep it up.

Lately it seems to me like the PP has been running through him as much as any one. Other than shooting which Mathews is the king.

I like the lines like this. Tavares and Nylander separated and each paired with 2 "worker bees" has helped them. I realize Tavares' goal last night was off the rush from Nylanders pass of course.

Tavares statistically has been much better he's +5 with 4 points in the 3 games since Mikheyev and Kerfoot have been his regular linemates. At least the first time I saw these combos was against Boston.

Campbell looked a little over aggressive at the beginning of the game and was all over the place but settled in nicely. He looked like he was having fun again and hopefully he gets his confidence back and gets back to being dominant!

When I was younger I used to get hyped up over fights and if you told me it would be or could be take out of the game, I would have called you nuts. Now, I certainly don't need it for entertainment value. Wouldn't bother me if that's gone. The only place I still enjoy/want it is due to game management. If neither the refs nor the league can deal with cheap crap properly, then ya I want to see the guy who got away with it get what he deserves.

But again, that can be fixed, not that I expect it to be. I think even in that aspect, if fighting goes the way of the dodo, so be it, I have no problem adapting to change in the game. Well actually, if they put ads on jerseys (and I mean ones that replace the logo like Soccer, not a little one on the shoulder) and replace players with cyborgs, ok I'm not quite ready for that level of change. But fighting? We've already seen the game neutered and I still tune in, so here we are. But once again, the refs and DOPS doing their jobs properly would be really, really nice.

Quite a play, from the pass reception in the middle of a turn, to the immediate deke on the defender. Faking a shot then going wide around behind the net.. (I’m thinking he’s going for a wrap around) nope, he instinctively find a wide open Matthews in front.
I love how all 6 Flyers are hypnotized.

True, but don't forget that every new player has to show something that gets him another shift, and another game, and so on.

It's a very short runway, as coaches and managers fighting for their own jobs need to win too.

Every shift is your opportunity.

True and true

I would bet that they are not so harsh as to write his season off after one game. If they were it would be more for things we are not privy to.

You’re right. Having two smallish players like Blackwell and Abruzzese on the 4th line is going to be unproductive for us. I think the guy we need there is Knies. Big, skilled, and can hit.

I think Knies is that big body , skilled power forward that the Leafs haven't had since.... since... uhhh.. I cant think of the last time we had a big power forward... Matthews excluded... Matty is big and strong but he's not kind of same kind of power forward as Knies, ther eis more physicality to Knies game. Knies is simply a Bull (with great hands) in a China shop kind of power forward, he can dangle you or go through you, he really does not care. If Knies play with out the puck is NHL level, this kid will never see a day in the AHL. He's that good. I'm super high on him.

The way Knies establishes body positioning drives his value in every dimension of the game. He tries to be first on every puck at all costs, getting his leg in front of his opponent’s, then coming across their body with his hips to seal off the defender. Some off-puck awareness makes Knies a bit of a scoring threat, hunting space after passing. -EliteProspects 2021 NHL Draft Guide
