Lmao never been convinced of Holl, and got a straight shellacking from a prominent board poster here.

We won, take the two points and run, hope Mrazek can make some saves to make him easier to trade for Campbell's contract.

Most of the posters make it a point to takes shots at Holl, it's almost become a religion:rolleyes:

Outplayed by a fair bit. Defence has gone too shit. Far too many rush chances, in particular.

If we play like this against Edmonton, we will get lit up

Have you seen Edmonton lately? this would be the perfect time to play them.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

The first goal is all on Mrazek, Holl played the pass as he should(watch the replay) Mrazek just whiffed on what should have been a pretty easy blocker save.

The second goal is all on Mrazek although what needs to be said here is that a certain Leafs defender whom btw does not wear #3 was in a position to block Murphy's shot and for whatever reason decided it was not prudent to do so.

The offence when it decided to play was a juggernaut, sadly they didn't feel like defending for the most part which nullified their nifty goal production!

The Good: Mrazek only has two years left on his contract

The Bad: Mrazeks contract may cost the Leafs a big bowl of hot Soup! Hopefully a contender loses both of their goalies and needs to make a trade for guy with experience!

The Ugly: Friedge' suit jacket but my, my my what a tie!

I would like to hear his reasoning for playing Holl so much.

Justin Holl is the guy who wears #3 he played the 4th most minutes of Leafs defenders at 20:21 Liljegren at 5th most was 18:02, Rubins who didn't have a very good night was 6th at 9:27

Justin Holl plays the PK which he is very good at, he also doesn't take a lot of PIMS which is a bonus considering the time he spends defending, Holl plays against some pretty stiff competition and as such is going to be on the ice for a fair number of GA's. and as he isn't a offensive type by any stretch is always going to have a Corsi number that doesn't look great.

Good teams find a way to win, and the Leafs manage to follow up a loss with a win. In fairness, Mrazek was shaky coming back from injury. I have no faith in him right now, especially considering how poorly he did in his AHL conditioning stint.

I was told it was because the Marlies stink:laugh:

iunno maybe it is?

Scott Mayfield makes $1.45 million. If we are somehow able to flip one of Engvall, Dermott, Holl we can make the salaries work. Additionally we would only take on the remaining salary that he has left till the end of the year. So if we get him at the trade deadline, it’s a prorated salary we take on. Not the full 1.45 million, so it’s workable.

Listen I may have been wrong about Liljegren before, he’s a player. But he’s not a top 4 dman right now and if we have to depend on him to play top 4 minutes for us down the stretch and in the playoffs I can’t see us making it far because that means our 3rd pairing has become weaker. Mayfield is exactly the type of guy we need. Physical, but smart, can skate and also move the puck up ice. Not to mention he can shoot from the point. PLUS he comes with another year on his deal.
Sounds like it could work. I would be interested to see what they would have to give for him

Just watched the Kampf goal a few more times.

That was a lucky bounce, but it was anything but a lucky goal.

Kampf was in the right place at the right time, and that was no mistake. It was good play.

It was also very skilful to bury it on a hard one-timer off his backhand with the goalie sliding across the crease. Mikheyev, Kapanen, Holl and a bunch of others would have found a way to miss that. It would have been another "what-if" moment.

Good on Kampf for doing the work and having the focus and concentration to bury the biscuit.

Dermott needs to get back to health so Holl can sit for bit. Holl is getting worse by the game, really bad on a couple goals last night.

Seems like a bad time for them to be heading West. Hate to see them lose in Edmonton but they’re due.

not so sure, maybe the third goal both he and Rubins lollygagged a little bit coming back, it was Rubins side however. but any of the others I seriously don't see how he ALONE was at fault?

Kampf seems to enjoy playing against Chicago too!

First goal and third were played terribly

Kampf is on a pace to have his best goal production. He did score 8 one year, but he's on pace for 11! ;-)

Oh, he did score a goal in the 2019-2020 playoffs. Not everyone can do that. :sarcasm:

Mrazek had a very Andersen-like game ... gave up an early goal. Made some incredible saves when the team hung himont to dry, but then let a couple of meh goals when the Leafs started to stabilize their play to allow the Hawks into the game.

Had that game gone to OT I didn't trust Mrazek at all.

I did not like his play on that goal at all.

He effectively gave a tap in goal to the Hawks.

Just rewatched the replay, and while Rubins was trailing the attacker he was still engaged with him.

Holl went over and added absolutely nothing as the attacker still had time and space to pass the puck to Holl's man who was now completely uncovered.

That was a poor decision, he should have stayed on his man and Mrazek would have only had to concern himself with a bag angle shot.

It was a bad read by Holl .. Rubins' man wouldn't have been able to cut to the net at the speed he was going .. Taking out Kubalik would have at least forced the Hawks' skater around the net possibly buying time for the forwards to get back. Or it would have prevented the tap in goal

Mrazek had a half good game. He made some bell-ringer saves in the 2nd but still in the end allowed goals on two stoppable shots. He was too active in this game for my taste. Collided with Rielly because he was 4 feet out of his crease. Not a big fan of the over-challenging the shooter strategy because it leads to empty net tap ins and frantic scrambling to cover up. I thought he usually played more under control than this. Maybe he was extra hyped up for this start.

I am told we are vastly improved defensive team

Why?

They have been vastly improved. You have watched the games. With Marner and Sandin out of course they would be a little worse.

So far clipping along at .500 which is what you hope fore with 4 regulars out.

This team does not miss marmer at all. It’s hard not to watch an imagine how much better this team would be with his cap space spread out on a top 6 winger to replace him and the rest on a dman to replace holl. It’s just going to be way to hard to win anything meaningful with his cap hit being as bad it is. Truly one of the worst contracts in the nhl and it absolutely sucks having it on this team

This is an awful take. The Leafs have been horrible since Marner has been out and have been fortunate to be 2-2-1 which stretched out over a season would have them miss the playoffs.

There is something to the PP clicking without running every play through him.

But as a whole,, the PK and all lines 5v5 have missed Marner greatly

The Leafs are not anywhere near the top. They are a very good defensive team.
Definitely not as good as they were on their big winning streak. Do you have any stats to show they are nowhere near the top (and I realize I don’t have any to show)? In the last 3 or 4 games they’ve given up at least 3 or 4 odd man rushes each game, and a few have been basically breakaways.

I feel like the last 2 playoff series for the Leafs were so bizzare in how they played out tactically it is hard to look at those stats too much. Both series were the leafs dominating puck possession against a team fine to sit back, clog the neutral zone, collapse to the net defensively while in D-zone and then try to hit the leafs with a quick counter/off the rush. I hope leafs face a different kind of opponent this year to get a barometer of how they player against a team who considers themselves more evenly matched

Why would a playoff opponent do anything other than sit back, clog the neutral zone, collapse back, and counter strike?
Any coach that doesn't have his team ready to do that against the Leafs in the playoffs should be fired.

obviously we have to pay a premium and that's a good question. He's on the block, NYI has a few guys pushing from Bridgeport, so I think it's just they believe they can get a few quality assets. I'd be willing to move our first for him, anythung to go for it.
I don't know. They have Pelech and Pulock and Mayfield. They will have to replace Chara and Greene and probably Hickey by next year. Dobson looks good, Salo is fine, but I don't know about Aho, and there's not much after that.

Also, he may be their best puck moving D, and that's an area where they are really thin.

To be fair Sandin. Dermott and Spezza are also missing. It’s not just Marner because the offence is still there. I would think they are missing our Dmen more then Marner

The surprising part is the Leafs quit playing ..

They were up 3-1 after 1 on a AHL level goalie in Hawks net and mustered only 3 shots on net in the 2nd period, and then gave up 3 straight goals against the 30th ranked team in offense (GF) this year.

I use Marner because of having to bump Kase up to the first line.

Second line is intact and still producing, and Matthews is driving first line no matter who he plays with.

The third line was lights out all year with Kase and Kamph. A true shutdown line.

Marner also is underrated as a 2 way forward. Plus he is a great PK'er.

Spezza does hurt as he is the best 4th line player they have and he and Simmonds were really clicking.

Sandin and Dermott they also miss.

Everyone is in a role they shouldn't be and it is just compounding into a mess on the ice

Just rewatched as well, as I missed the first half of the first period and you're correct. Holl played the 3rd goal about as bad as an NHL defenceman could. He also played the 1st goal quite poorly, and when he was with Muzzin on that Debrincat chance in the 1st Muzzin once again looked horrendous.

Mrazek also let in two weak ones on the 2nd and 4th goals as well.
