I could really use a hello game from Spezza and Tavares

Spezza has been all but useless with 1 point in his last 8

Tavares on EV has blown a majority of chances in the last few games

both could use a big game, but most important of all

MRAZEK HAVE A .900+ GAME plz

All I want to see tonight is a structured, disciplined defensive effort like the ones we were getting earlier this season. Enough with the blown leads and not playing a full 60.

He has been struggling. Still my favorite leaf on this roster.

How wrong you are

Lessons are learned every single game in every single situation they haven't experienced before

Players can learn and put what they have learned into practice after just one game

That's what we call "improvement" or "getting better"

I can live with some growing pains. Leafs aren't fighting the get into the playoffs, they have some room to go before they're in that spot.

Dermott, in his 5th. NHL season, kind of shows sometimes the player just doesn't get it after 200 games. At 25 he is a bottom pairing defender. Better than Holl at 25, but Holl is probably a bottom pairing defender on a team that has a strong d-corps. Leafs are good defensively when the forwards pick up someone to cover, but the Rangers' game showed what happens when the forwards aren't engaged defensively.

Liljegren - 35 games
Sandin - 68 games

Who you going to pair them with, if not each other?
Rielly - Liljegren
Sandin - Brodi

Based on some of the comments here you'd never know that we're 4-2-1 in January so far. People will literally complain about anything.
Yep. .643 point % in January.

Islanders have .833 point % in January, and have given up only 10 goals in 6 games.

Discouraged it? When things got sideways against the Jets...he literally put a winger, Kyle Clifford, at center...just so he could throw out Ritchie-Clifford-Simmonds lol
Keefe used to play the game hard himself. Not sure how he's discouraged it. He's coaching a soft team as beat he can. We got rougher up front with Ritchie, but he's been a liability so now he's riding the pine. We lost Bogosian on D, and we're letting Sandin/Liljegren/Dermott fill that hole. We got softer than we were last year. That's on Dubas, not on Keefe. We need toughness that can play top 9 and be effective. Simmonds is great at 4RW. Ritchie & Clifford haven't been good enough to hold down a 4th line role. We're by all accounts a soft team...but I'm not sure how Keefe has "discouraged aggressive activities"
99% of his games coached he demands less aggression, afraid of penalties and p killing.
Then suddenly he wants a change. Simmons is naturally aggressive, so is Clifford, maybe even Ritchie, but they have been stopped too many times, or not encouraged for sure. As for Holl, he appears to be a wimp, but maybe I is coaching since he had Keefe in Marlies. You do not have to fight every night to be aggressive. Face washes, scrums, etc can do the job.

Did you think the Leafs would be a top 5 team this year?

As the great Clark Gilles has sadly passed, the winner of four straight Cups, I ask myself, "who is the Leafs Clark Gilles"?

It could have been Ritchie. Maybe Simmonds pre injury. Or, are the Leafs lacking this type of player(s)?

Isles have picked up their play recently; won't be an easy walk in the park
Boston now 3 points behind Leafs with same number of games played

If things keep trending the same way it seems like Leafs might end up facing either Canes/Flordia as a WC team or Tampa (with Vasy in net) as a 3rd Atlantic division team.

:shakehead

P.S. Game against NYI is the game where Ritchie should draw in and play instead of Anderson IMO. Isles are not a fast team.

Nobody.

There's no one league wide like Gillies.

In his prime he was WELL over PPG, all while being a Top 3 fighter when the league was full of fighters.

That Islanders team was stacked and he was a handful.

Every team needs guys who are a "handful". Leafs in particular.

And Ritchie before that.

Maybe some people are starting to appreciate what Engvall brings to a line.

Engvall is fine as a player, but I think because guys like Simmonds and Clifford and other "tough" guys down in the lineup often fail to the snarling, hitting and face punching they want Engvall to do a little bit more of this and that.

We're going to see the Leafs have a revolving cast down in the bottom six for a few years. I think one thing to improve on for the Leafs is if they're looking at those 'testosterone', 'pugnacity' and 'truculent' players they should go for guys who are a little younger with higher energy levels, more health and more to prove.

I think the Isles started turning it around before Christmas but had a big shutdown as well. I don't spend too much time in them but from fantasy tracking at a distance Varlamov was getting back to health and getting some reps, defensively stabilized, their normally productive players started scoring a bit and they started putting some wins on the board.

I expect a sneaky frustrating game like Arizona.
