people need to move away from the idea this is a demotion for nylander, because its not. he might actually be better off now.
It is a demotion if you work it out logically. You really think Nylander is going to get more or the same ES minutes than Matthews or JT if he's not on their line? That's our 1-2 franchise Cs. Now add Marner to JTs line and it's close to 0% Nylander doesn't take a hit in his minutes.

Add to that he had his Center downgraded and it's literally the definition of demoted.

Nylander is one of the best wingers in the league this year, he doesn't need to be sheltered so I'm not sure what you mean by "better off" either. He is not better off on the third line playing with Kampf.

I'm all for trying these lines. Added roster versatility can only help in a tight playoff game.
My qualm with Babcock is that he never tried different line variations. The line you were on out of training camp was the line you were on for the year EXCEPT come playoff time - not playing well for a period, lines go in a blender but with people no one had played with all year. It was a mess. You gotta find out what variations work or don't work midseason, not during the playoffs.

Personally I would have switched Marner and Kerfoot, but I guess this just shows you the pecking order in terms of who can drive play. Matthews, Marner, Nylander and JT is the 4th.

The big stories for me will be if Marner can give JT the jolt he needs to get back on track and if Nylander can continue to drive a line being the main focal point. Offense might take a hit with Kampf but that's to be seen.

I believe logic says it's not a demotion for the simple reason that Nylander is having a great season and there is zero reason to demote him. It's January, we're trying some new things is all and when it's playoff time, I'm sure all our stars will get plenty of minutes no matter what line they're playing on.

Remember when JT and Marner were shutting down the Marchand / Bergeron / Pastrnak line, then Cassidy put Pastrnak on the 3rd line and he torched us? We need to have those same tools in our back pocket, smart to try it out midseason.

Exactly and great example of why this is a smart move!

Pasta was moved to the second line with Krejci and Debrusk. He never torched us from the 3rd line. He was demoted to the 3rd line in another series, not ours.

This is third line with David Kampf we're talking about here. In no world should one of the seasons most dynamic wingers be on the third line with David Kampf. He's a shutdown, zero offence C.

If you want something new, how about something actually worthwhile like trying a Marner/Nylander duo as a new tool.

Less ES minutes with a downgrade on linemates is a demotion regardless how you want to spin it.

Apparently it’s a Google Chrome issue. I started using safari with Adblock to make this site tolerable.
I'm finding most sites are now intolerable without an Adblock.

A lot of media/govt/pharma propaganda and AI targeting.

Try everything is what I'm saying. I would love to see Mitch and Willy on the same line

Refreshing to see Keefe trying to balancing the lines out by separating the top line players amongst the 3 lines. If it's anyone that gonna be able to carry a line without The big 3, it will be Matthews.

There hasn't even been a game played yet so minutes are unknown, they might roll lines evenly. It could be also viewed as a promotion - you're playing so well, we believe you carry a line giving us 3 scoring lines instead of two.

Nylander's playing so well this season, talk of him being demoted just makes no sense, not to me anyway.

Willie has not been great lately. Now I don’t think it is a demotion and more trying out new lines.
I really like the AM line with Bunting and Kase, I really think they played the best when they are together.
JT with MM and Soup is interesting, hope this works.
Kampf is a very smart and well position player. I think having him on a line with Willie and Kerfoot is great.
Maybe this is a way to cut down the 4th line minutes since they have been pretty bad lately.

Honestly, as long as they win, I could careless who plays where.

not sure Keefe is super-stoked by the Kerfoot-Tavares-Nylander line right now anyways, tbh.
I think you’re touching on something here.
I think what’s really behind all this is to get Tavares going somehow-at 11million he is just not producing consistently

Ice time allocation will tell whether Nylander's demoted or not, not where his name is written in the lineup. 3rd line plays regular shifts anyway.

Bingo, that’s how I see it as well, we are focussing on the wrong player with this move. Willy has been consistently one of our best players this year. To me this is a legitimate opportunity to try a 3 line approach BUT also JT has been struggling lately and him and Mitch together have always been great.

Maybe it’s a demotion for Mitch and Auston because now Sheldon will be more inclined to roll L1-3 evenly. This might mean a reduction in minutes for the other two lines in favour of more balance 5v5
