I don’t think him and Kerfoot are “demoted” as much as it’s trying to shuffle things up and try to find winning combinations. Nylander and Kerfoot on L3 provides unique match up opportunities

This. In the event Matthews/Marner are getting stymied, this could be an alternative look.

the lineup is begging to try out a true 3-line attack, so i'm not surprised with the shuffle.

And Matthews-Mitch despite being absolutely crushingly dominant possession wise alll year are just not producing at even strength together at all.

And of the Big 4 Willy might be the 2nd best guy to drive his own line anyways.

Of course Kampf sticks out there in a bad way as a guy who can't produce like the rest of the top-9, but 2 things:

1. Having an elite defensive and faceoff guy might not be the worst way to anchor those two wingers; and

2. Kampf could just be a placeholder there, even though Keefe obviously loves him. Not far fetched to see either of Spezza or Engvall moved up into his spot (Kerf could move over to C if you don't trust either of those guys in the middle), or hey if a kid like Robertson starts looking ready than a Robertson-Kerfoot-Nylander 3rd line could be fun too. And of course, there's always the possibility of a quality trade deadline add that would bump Kampf down to 4C. Imagine how hilariously good a Kerfoot-Hertl-Nylander "3rd line" would be.

I also do not see why Marner would not be on that 3rd line considering he is apparently a good defensive winger. I guess he truly cannot play without an elite center without being useless.

As much as I don’t like seeing Nylander demoted he’s been arguably our 2nd best player most of the year. Keefe probably has more confidence in him to carry that line then JT or Marner right now.

My ideal lineup has either Kerfoot or a 3C brought in that bumps kampf to the 4th.

You can mix and match too when needed. Need a big D zone face off win? Kerf kampf Engvall go over the boards.
I’ve been hoping to see them spread the offensive wealth through the line up better for a while.

These changes could be good... inject some excitement in the group and maybe find new combinations that work better than expected.

I'd still like to see Marner on PP2 to drive that unit on his own... he and Spezza along with Sandin could do some damage imo. Add in Mikheyev as a great puck retreiver and you never know... plus that allows PP1 to be a little less predictable with pass-first Marner in the mix.

I would play a little with the lineup from now to the all-star break (I think that is only 4 games anyway) to see what clicks.

Also expecting Campbell and Mrazek to split the four upcoming games barring injury. In fact, I'd throw Petr back in after that good performance on Saturday.

Matthews has proven he doesn’t need another top end player to produce, in fact he might be better on his own. When he’s with Mitch he’s always looking to find an open spot and get fed by Mitch. When he’s on his own he has the puck a lot more on his stick and utilizes his whole skill set way more.
Not that bunting & Kase are awful either.

I like these lines. Matthews Marner and Nylander are all capable of driving their own line. Will keep other coaches on their toes when matching lines.

The new ads basically break the page for me. Format gets all messed up and none of the links work. I have to refresh until the ads go away.

I guess maybe with jt not going, get him a new look? Marner was buzzing so maybe try something else with jt. And we know Austin can carry his own line. Then that would leave Nylander to feast on third pairings. Solid idea in theory.... Let's see! I'd like to see Spezza with willy personally.
