Confirmed with Link: Leafs sign John Prokop (Union College, NCAA) to ELC (1 year, $875k; begins 2025-26, ATO with Marlies this season)

35 points in 36 games last year. Good height, could put on some weight. Left handed

Adding more prospects is never a bad thing.. it wouldn't shock me if we let go, moved a couple of our existing D prospects.

Cool. Go out and get a bunch of these guys if they look like they have real potential.

Wasn’t there another top NCAA guy were linked to a month or so ago, forward?

Edit: found it - 3 weeks ago, Luke Haymes. Only 21 years old instead of the usual 24 as well

I wonder who Topi’s that list?

While I agree with you, it's not my expectation that it's going to be D men, doing the dump and chase.
the recent WHLer has the size and speed they are looking for. But yes this is a dman in this example and Tre’s style is the opposite of Dubas. Big and mobile defense versus skilled undersized players.

Union season-ticket holder here.

Prokop is a monster in transition, can eat minutes, is a real shooting threat and also a capable passer. He moves pretty well, but is not an explosive skater. Great vision while skating, though, and able to find lanes and move through the neutral zone with ease. One of the best offensive defenseman I've seen in the ECAC in the last 5 years.

I would say he's an average defender in his own zone. He transitioned from F to D in the USHL, so maybe his game is still a work in progress there, but he is almost 24. He's not physical, can struggle with physical play, and has the occasional ugly giveaway, which makes sense considering how often the puck is on his stick.

I think his ceiling, considering his age, is a bottom-pair PMD/PP specialist. Definitely worth a contract to see what he can do at the pro-level.

The Maple Leafs are likely viewing him as a potential replacement for Topi Niemela.

Primary Comparison: Shayne Gostisbehere

Prokop's offensive upside, transition game, and shooting ability most closely resemble Shayne Gostisbehere. Both are offensive-minded defensemen who excel in transition and possess good shots from the point. Like Gostisbehere, Prokop isn't known for his physical play and has some defensive limitations, but provides offensive value and power play potential.

Secondary Comparison: Vince Dunn

Dunn's combination of mobility, puck-moving ability, and offensive instincts align with Prokop's skill set. Both players are more finesse than physical, can contribute offensively, and have similar frames, though Prokop is slightly taller. Dunn has developed into a reliable top-4 defenseman despite not being the most physically imposing, which could be a realistic ceiling for Prokop if he develops properly.

Stylistic Comparison: Erik Gustafsson

Gustafsson's game as an offensive defenseman who can quarterback a power play but has defensive limitations mirrors what we're hearing about Prokop. Both players are known more for their offensive contributions than defensive prowess, and both have the ability to create offense from the blue line.
