Is there any indication of whether other teams were also pursuing him?
We know he can handle pressure at least for the short term. I sure hope he clears.

Its a 1 way deal so not a zero cost to a claim. I like it. 40 games with Grand Rapids in 2018 is the only blemish in the last 7 years. I already trust him more than Mrazek.

I think at this point, the Leafs feel more comfortable playing any goalie that isn't named Mrazek or Hutchinson.

Mrazek will clear and this guy will be claimed, guaranteed.

Noob question. When is the deadline for clearing?
After a player has been designated for assignment, the other 31 NHL teams can put in a claim or waive their claim for that player. The claims process starts at noon Eastern Time and ends 24 hours later. (48 hours if they are put on waivers on a Saturday or Sunday) only one team makes a claim for the player, then he will be transferred to the claiming team.

I'd be surprised if Sateri clears. Leafs are not the only team having goaltending issues.

Why wouldn't a team like Florida, TB or Boston not put in a claim, simply playing defense against the Leafs knowing they might face them in the playoffs?

Unless they might want Toronto to play an untested goalie against them, and they're hoping he doesn't get claimed.

FWIW: As an amateur draft junkie Harri Satari was a player back in 2008, that was on my own personal draft board that I hoped my Leafs would take in ~4th/5th round .. San Jose took him in the 4th (106 OA).

I wonder how many of these situations have resulted in the player being claimed, or if teams have an unwritten rule not to.

He goes on the roster if claimed, takes up a spot and cap space

Well the CBA put it in the rules that any player unsigned to an NHL deal after Dec 31st of current year must clear waivers first, so to prevent any shenanigans by teams hiding players in Europe and then bringing them over for the stretch run and playoffs.

So I don't know about any unwritten rules about claiming, but there are written rules in the leagues bylaws to force all teams to pass on a player through waivers for that signing team to get him on their roster.

Not if he doesn't show up and stays in Europe and then goes on a did not report list, and doesn't count against the Cap.

In this case he signed with the Leafs in hopes on being on an NHL roster and playing in the NHL, with other teams he would simply be a spare part.

At $750k prorated for ~1/4 of a season left = ~ $185-200k cap hit essentially which is really peanuts for any team claiming him, even if it was done simply to keep him from Toronto.

Toronto heading into the playoff stretch with an injured/struggling Campbell and Mrazek on waivers is not a good situation the Leafs find themselves in so this is a ultimate hail marry to begin with for Leafs.

However if another team was interested based on his Olympic performance recently, and lost out to the Leafs signing him first instead as player choice, then that would be a more logical team to place a claim now. IMO
