It only matters to fans because of the hard cap system And in Matthews case he is not a very good playoff performer

You do know contracts have nothing to do with playoff performance. I don’t get why that is constantly brought up. Players never have and never will be paid for playoff performance it’s virtually a non factor in contract negotiations. You get paid for what you do in the regular season.

Jack Eichel got 80 Million and never made the playoffs up until recently.

Thats just false. There are a number of examples of players having a good playoffs and getting paid right afterwards.

Obviously every situation is different.

I mean when people are saying he's motivated by nothing other than greed the distinction is kind of erased

Bingo! Because his cap hit % is no different than other star players The number is just higher because the salary has raised slightly since the last guy took a similar percentage.

Who? Name me one superstar in the NHL who was paid more because of their playoff performance.

List out the examples I’ll wait. In the cap era young stars are paid for potential. You have guys like Jack Hughes who’s done f*** all making crazy money.

Some of the best playoff performers didn’t make a ton of money, Justin Williams for example one of the best playoff performers wasn’t ever able to parlay that into $10 million contracts.

Fair there are some cases, especially goaltenders. I should have been more specific in terms of talking about in the context of franchise players
. First overall picks, #1 dmen, #1 centers and wingers in the same elk as McDavid, Matthews, Eichels, Tkachuk ect. They were all paid for their potential value to the club before really having great playoff performances

Are you trying to tell me a player who is a 2 time SC winner for instance and known as a playoff warrior - this isn't factored into who wants hiim and how much they'll pay over a guy who has won nothing and doesn't elevate his playoff game ? Nonsense.

The point I’m making is people keep using Matthews playoff numbers as justification for the contract being bad. And what I’m saying is that if playoff performance matters so much why are we not seeing more middling forwards parlay those performances into 8, 9, 10 million dollar contracts if that’s what matters most?

If what you’re saying is true then shouldn’t those players be who teams prioritize? But the truth of the matter is most superstars are not paid on playoff performance they are paid based on their value to the team overall. So teams are willing to overlook bad playoff performances or bank on the fact that their superstars will break out at some point in the playoffs during that contract.

Adin Hill just parlayed a SC win into a 4 mil contract that he wouldn’t have got if Vegas did not win. I don’t think Leafs are winning with Matthews cap hit. Even if the cap goes up to 90, that is still 14.7% of the cap. He is not that good to carry a team to the Cup. You need balance, just like Vegas.

Agreed I concede that stance, I should have been more precise in speaking to superstar contracts. Or Franchise players is what I was trying to refer to. Honestly you can’t really use Vegas as a template, yes they had balance but they also used LTIR to circumvent the cap to their advantage. I don’t think Vegas wins the cup without that move they wouldn’t be able to make the additions they did for their run without it. But I see your point about balance.

I am aware that we still have no idea as to how much the cap will rise in the 2024 season.
Just for the hallibut, lets say it´s between 3M and 4M.
AM34 will eat up (roughly) 1,6M of said cap increase.
Willy will (most likely) get a similar bump in cap space.

The cap rise in 2024 will be almost completely (if not de facto completely) eaten by those two extensions alone.
Being cap crunched with this core has lead to constant heartache and underachievements.
And yet, all signs point to it happening again. I´d say it´s textbook insanity.

Just because the people you've talked to don't understand that what players make has a direct impact on the organization to build a winning team around them, doesn't mean it's not an obvious truth.

His PTS/60 indicates that if it was a down season, then it's one of six down seasons out of the last seven.

Seems to me more like 5 out of the last 6 seasons are the baseline and is where we should expect him to be but instead, he's being paid based as if the one outlier season was his baseline.

I know we gave disagreed in the past but I fully agree with you in this thread.

It's crazy to see the rationalization and the lack of logic accompanying it.

Paying your stars more than every other team is a huge disadvantage.

Almost everything in this post is wrong and you seem really angry. Since I don't know where you live I'm not sure whether recommending Xanax or Ativan is more appropriate. Do try to take it easy, talk to your doctor and good luck!
I'm not angry, I'm excited for next season. You probably don't realize it but this coming season will be our best chance to win the cup in the modern era. I do however feel sorry for all of you haters because if we do win you won't be able to enjoy the win as much. You're now stuck with either being wrong about Marner and Matthews or the Leafs winning.

First of all the regular season is meaningless to you now as you've put all of your eggs into the playoffs so you can't really enjoy that as much. But now you'll actually hope that the Leafs lose so that you were right to spend thousands and thousands of posts and hours bitching and whining about Matthews and Marner. I really do feel sorry for you because if they actually win you will have ruined it for yourself. Oh, you'll say it was all about the playoffs and that you were just waiting for them to step up and you'll pretend that you're just as happy but it won't change the fact that you've wasted an enormous amount of time being a hater. And the proof is what happened just a few months ago when we won in the first round. You instantly became the biggest homer for exactly 3 games and then went back to whining.

I'm not angry, I just feel really sorry for you and the rest of the haters. We have a really good chance this season. If we fail in the playoffs again you and your kind will be able to feel good about yourselves which is pathetic, but it's already too late for you to really enjoy this season if we do win it all. And that's really sad, for you.

At the end of the day, teams have to sell 41 home games. People pay to watch the stars and Matty is one of those guys who can write his own ticket. Leafs management realize this and paid up. It is what it is.

I don't think anyone is saying it's bad or terrible. It's just not a great contract. I know I don't really care about this one because he is a beast of a goal scorer. It's the Marner and Nylander contracts that really worry me, more so Marner because I dont even think he deserves his current salary.

I've talked to 5 people now in the real world and everyone thought the deal was fine.
Most people don't really care what the players make, they just want the team to win.

This board, IMO isn't a good representation of the fanbase.

Funny I've talked to several people in the real world as well and most of them remarked how greedy matthews was before I even mentioned my opinion on the matter.

It seems like you have a clear agenda in the thread because you know marner is going to ask for a similar deal. So if you can rationalize this overpayment it will help make it easier when mitch also gets overpaid.

At the end of the day we all should want the leafs to win the cup. So far with matthews and marner already taking up to much of the cap we have had almost zero success. Now we pay them even more and hope for different results

Insanity.

The only thing I’ll say about @Gary Nylund is I’ve never seen someone flip flop about a player (Marner) as much as him LOL. But I’m general he’s good poster I enjoy my interactions with him even if we disagree sometimes.

I do agree though sometimes the complaining is crazy and we should enjoy the ride and see what each season brings us. But at the same time every fan has a right to feel how they feel! You’re not wrong for believing in the team and hoping they can figure it out. And others are not wrong to feel like this team/organization is a joke. Because we haven’t really had a ton of success. So both sides have a leg to stand on.

There was a time when being ultra critical of the Leafs was ok, the most recent was when Babcock was tanking. This is not the time now. Imagine how Boston fans feels. That team set records and then got bounced in the first round and then got largely disassembled. We've kept our core together, added some much needed left wingers and just re-signed the greatest goal scorer in team history and these guys are still whining.

You go from "No one has ever been paid based on playoff performance" to "Superstar"

Lol way to change the context after your post.

Much more difficult for a superstar to have such a drastic change in regular season performance and playoff performance. Typically if youre good in the regular season youll be good in the playoffs. Of course theres examples of players being much worse in the playoffs than regular season.

We were talking about Matthews to begin with and I was originally implying players similar to Matthews but I get that my choice of words opened it up to the NHL as whole, I can accept that. But I wasn’t trying to change context after the fact, I was speaking originally to players like Matthews. I even referenced Jack Hughes and Jack Eichel as my first examples which support my original implication of star centers/players.

You think Matthews’s did isn’t even 14% of the cap? 2 time rocket. 1 goal off a 3rd and the season stopped. Hart

You can’t be serious.

He clearly earned his context. Let’s hope he earns this one

Your post is barely readable.

Matthews signed his current deal back in February 2019. Since then only 2 contracts have surpassed matthews 11.634.

One was a Ufa signing in breadman, max term.

The other was Ufa Mackinnon after he won a cup, max term.

Not a single star rfa has signed for anywhere close to Austons contract. Add on that almost all of them signed for more than 5 years.

Now also consider not a single player, that I can find, has their contract as front loaded as matthews.

So for, what's most likely the most player friendly deal in the league, we got 1 season where matthews was top 2 in the league, ~2 top 10 seasons and 1 ~20th ranked season.

I would not say matthess earned his last contract and I very much doubt he'll earn this one.

It would be interesting to see a list of top paid players by cap%, both when signed and today.

Top 25 for cap hit% at the time of signing their deals.
