Team played well in front of him for his shutout. He was strong when needed and confident.

Such a team commitment often happens for a goalie in his first start as the team wants to put forth their best effort. The problem is that after awhile the team will regress back to the high wire act and leave him out to dry.

If the team always played with this commitment to defense they would be far more dangerous

Good to get to see a lot of Kallgren.

+
He has strong fundamentals.
His glove is a vacuum.
Very positionally sound and doesn't move unless necessary.
Calm in scrambles.
Finds pucks through screens.
Maintains a solid base on tips, trusting his technique and lets pucks hit him.
Good visual connection to the puck
Integrates with the post really smoothly and is confident on low net drives.
Good use of stick in directing pucks to corners + poke checks on wrap arounds or net drives.

-
Let out a few suspect rebounds
Not sure about his blocker side.
Average athleticism

?
How does he respond to letting in goals?
How bad are his 'bad' games?
How does he bounce back from bad games?
Puck handling still need to see more
Durability
Endurance
Can he adjust as teams start to get reads on him?
Shootouts?

You obviously have much more technical knowledge than me. But the one thing I really liked hearing is that he is apparently just ice.

Calm poised nothing rattled him.

Well so far that’s true. Nice change from Jack’s heart on sleeve

It's interesting to observe how a goalie who minimizes movement, tracks the puck and maintains good technique isn't subject to terrible bounces. He definitely has the size, composure and technique down. I guess as we see more game tape of him we'll also get a better sense of his athleticism and that second, third effort in terms of battling.

Can't complain about 0 regulation goals against in 1.5 appearances so far.

Imagine being drafted in 2015 and playing your first NHL games in 2022.

kids head must be spinning

Sorry to be a wet blanket, but the last Leafs goalie to get a shutout in his debut was Garret Sparks.
It might be a teeny bit premature to anoint him as the Leafs saviour.

That’s not how we roll here.
Logic be dammed

True, but they were very different performances.

Garret faced just above 20 shots and was swimming all over the place. You could tell how much luck was involved in that result.

Erik faced close to 40 shots and was mostly technically sound throughout. Most of his saves were a result of his fundamentals.

The odds of Kallgren being able to continue success in that manner are higher than the odds of Sparks being able to replicate that performance.

Super calm in there and I wonder if his age and experience are helping him adjust quickly including that 1.74GAA, .930 save% SHL championship run he had and the 25 games with the Marlies to get used to NA ice.

We don't need him to be super special or anything, just a calm stabilizing presence at the back after the tire fire of the last couple of months.

Really hoping Källgren works out for Toronto. They need a break for once! It would be absolutely amazing to see him steal the net and emerge as an elite starter in the NHL. A little good luck for the Leafs would be great for a change. Put this goaltending debate to bed.

I mean the man has an SHL championship. Led them there as a 24 year old.

Hardly the most nerve-wracking game he's played in.

He looked great out there tonight and very calm. It was nice to see given our goaltending situation the past 2 months. Hopefully Kallgren can at least steal the backup spot heading into next season. A good goalie for 750k would be very helpful with our cap situation.
