After the first two goals went in against Kallgren, I figured it was going to be another long night against a mediocre team. I am glad I was wrong because from the second period onward, Toronto didn't let off one single bit.
I remember the overly celebratory videos that were being churned out by Winnipeg when they beat the Leafs four months ago. I remember marking this date on my calendar. I knew retribution would be in order. Only this time, the videos of celebrations came from the Leafs locker room. Not only did Toronto get their revenge, but they served that dish of revenge with a pile of whipped cream and 50 cherries on top with Matthews getting his 50th goal against the Jets on home ice in 62 games.
The haters can have their, "Matthews won't show up in the first round. The Leafs will be golfing in May.", but on that night, I had my celebratory chuckles at the expense of a mediocre Jets team. A Jets team trying to scratch and claw for a playoff spot. All of their hopes, dreams and desires of a playoff berth are now further away thanks to the Leafs.
Hearing the Jets fans all day today yap about how their team was going to school Toronto. How their team is so much better than ours. It's f**king music to my ears to hear them whine about the refs in this game. Accusing the Leafs of having the refs in their pocket all the time, when reality is that Toronto receives some of the fewest powerplay opportunities of all teams over the last 5-6 seasons.
I will never forget this game. The fact that this team can make me love them one week and hate them the next is an odd, but quite exhilarating feeling to experience. I used to watch Football, Basketball, Baseball, every thing. However, for the last 20 years, it's been nothing but the Leafs. I honestly could care less about any other sport. I love my hockey, I love my Leafs, I love this forum, I love debating, I love talking smack when it's warranted, I love whining when my time does piss poorly, I love overreacting whenever the Leafs give up a bad goal... it means that I'm emotionally invested in this team, I'm that passionate enough to care. That feeling is great, being a hockey fan, not much else is better in terms of entertainment, not for me at least.
Congrats to Matthews and his 50th goal, it's been impressive watching him over these last six seasons. I really hope he gets to experience much more in the playoffs.
Here's hoping.
