Couldn't find an appropriate Matthews thread in the top threads so I'll post this here:

Only seven active players in the NHL have ever scored 50 or more goals in a season - including Matthews (Ovechkin, Crosby, Malkin, Perry, Stamkos, Draisaitl).

93 players in NHL history have scored 50 or more goals in a season once or more in their career including Leafs Rick Vaive (1982, 1983, 1984), Gary Leeman (1990) and Dave Andreychuk (1994).
I think Matthews performance is most impressive amongst the past Leafs because he did it when scoring was 20-35% lower in the NHL than when those other Leafs did it - and when scoring was lower when most of the others in NHL history did it.

Only two active NHLers have scored more than 51 goals in a season. (Ovechkin & Stamkos). Matthews and Draisaitl are about to join that elite pair.

Matthews is on pace to score 62 goals. Only 14 other NHL players in NHL history have scored 62 or more in a season. All but Ovechkin did it during seasons when scoring in the NHL was significantly higher.

So what Austin Matthews is doing this season with his goal scoring is pretty special.

EDIT: Some of the early Leafs like Conacher may be unfairly left out of the conversation because they played shorter seasons.

For the record he scored at the same pace last year too.

Marner is playing unbelievable. Guy can play in a phone booth now and not lose the puck. Seems to be all huggy and stuff with Nylander, good to see.

Micheyev. Foof. Boy am I enjoying watching him play, and what a play my giraffe made to get him the puck.

There is no question in my mind, this is the most exciting NHL team to watch, along with two years ago Tampa Bay, since the Oilers in the 80's.

I mean, Kjalgren is getting the ride of his life.

The kid is just awful handling the puck, yet he keeps on insisting on doing it. Its hilarious to watch.

I think the Leafs play vicious defence now, cause they don't want any shots on whoever is in the net. Lol.

Excellent effort by Simmonds and CLifford, in a way, those two set the tone for the team, you could almost say they won the game for us. EXACTLY what I envisioned.

We are turning into a tough team as well as a ridic talented team. Nice combo.

Side note. Dubas wasn't clapping at all, when Matthews scored the 50th, maybe Matthews gets a big bonus and it comes out of Dubas' cheque? Why else would he not clap?

Empty net. :sarcasm:

Gotta love beating the Jets and putting them out of the playoffs on the same night. Play of the night was the save the post made on Kampfs empty netter. Pretty sure the entire arena didn’t want that to go in. great game.

What a f***ing game, was there live amazing experience. Matty scoring 50 was nuts, full standing ovation for I don't even know how long. Not sure if you could hear it on TV but everyone was chanting 50 the entire game and then when he finally scored, the crowd erupted. Utter domination, Jets got a couple early ones off Kallgren but were never in this game at all. Completely outclassed them as we should have. Great f***ing win, also love the energy from Simmonds. He laid someone the f*** out along the boards.
