I will be going through our roster and injured players and we will determine the players role... i.e Kessel (Elite winger) vs (1A winger) vs (1B winger) vs (2A winger)

This is not determining their role for the team, but what they're capable of on a playoff team. I'll only be putting what in my mind are "realistic" options.

Term definitions:

Elite: Top 5 in their position
1A: 1st line/1st pairing/#1 Goalie
1B: Able to fill in 1st line/1st pairing/Average Starter
2A: 2nd line/2nd pairing/Back-up
2B: Able to fill in 2nd line/2nd pairing/Too good for AHL Starter but not proven
3A: 3rd line/3rd pairing
3B Able to fill in 3rd line/3rd pairing
4A 4th line
4B: Able to fill in 4th line
Scratch: 13th player/7th dman
AHL player: Self explanatory

I'll be starting from the net out.

Goaltending

James Reimer 1B
Ben Scrivens 2A

Defense

Cody Franson 2B
Mark Fraser 3A
Jake Gardiner 1B
Carl Gunnarsson 2B
Korbinian Holzer
Mike Komisarek
Michael Kostka
John-Michael Liles
Dion Phaneuf

Forwards

Tyler Bozak
Matt Frattin
Mikhail Grabovski
Nazem Kadri
Phil Kessel
Leo Komarov
Nikolai Kulemin
Joffrey Lupul
Clarke MacArthur
Jay Mcclement
Frazer McLaren
Colton Orr
David Steckel
James Van Riemsdyk

Keep me aware of errors please.

edit: Could a mod close the Fraser, Gunnarsson, Franson and Gardiner threads please?

I voted 3A. He's strong, physical third pairing D and I think he's only going to improve as he gets more experience with the big club.

Has the potential two be a solid top four guy, he just needs to step it up a notch from where he's at right now and make a few more smart decisions with the puck. I could see him in the third pairing if Fraser and Franson weren't so steady.

Gunnar got a 2B? Yeesh, that's a bit rough. Can't wait to see what our underperforming forwards this season get.

I'd give Holzer a 3A.

I think he has the potential to be a 2B/A, right now on most nights he plays at a 3A level (he does run hot and cold). We shall see if he can live up to his potential.

His upside is a 2b type. He's playing like a 3B, but personally, I like him a lot more moving forward than Gunnarson.

3B, guy will be handy on the bottom pairing going forward and maybe slipping to 7th when the defence is cleaned up down the road.

Maybe I am a homer; but, our defense is comprised of guys who are the traditional third, fill in second pairing guys. Fraser, Franson, Holzer and Kostka are the definition of that. However, the roster analysis is a little flawed because it doesn't take into account how versatile a guy is, aka, Kostka. He's a guy who can do it all, maybe not great; but he's one of those guys you just love to have because he is our defensive swiss army knife.

Gunnarsson is easily a 2A under this scale, and Phaneuf is a 1A. There, I talked about all the defenseman. Saved myself a couple of posts.
