I don’t mind that style of play. What I find kind of frustrating is we have the unique, impossible to find talent at the top already, so if we built a more conventional supporting cast that was a little more like that we would be a better balanced team and more likely to thrive in different game conditions.

so you want to go back to the dead puck era

Florida adds Giroux
Boston adds Lindholm

Yea.........

Believe me, this is not a hot take. Nylander is very skilled, but especially in this trade deadline, can you imagine what we could get for him? I’ve never liked his soft, lack of compete level to his game.

Moving Nylander is not the type of trade you make at the deadline, unfortunately, but I really think we could address some real serious needs by trading him.

One way or another, we desperately need to bring in skilled players that bring physicality and intensity. You absolutely need that to be successful in the playoffs.
I thought that a few years ago, but I let it go at the beginning of the season hoping maybe, just maybe, Nylander had finally figured it out. But it's becoming clear that no, his playoff performance last year was just us starting the playoffs on the upswing of his usual cycle. At this point, yes, I seriously consider trading him, either for a good goalie or a good defenseman. Then try to build an actual second line around Tavares.

He did, on the back of Pronger falling into his lap because his wife begged to leave Edmonton. Still cannot take the cup away from him though. Saw enough of him in Toronto to know I don't want someone like that building the team again.

Yeah and Dubas was gifted a team with boatloads of cap space and elite young talent on ELCs. One won a Cup, the other has created an annual embarrassment to the city of Toronto. A team that looks nowhere closer to winning even a single playoff round then when he started.

I agree though, I wouldn’t want him building this team either but Dubas is a total failure so far just like him in his time here.

Just disappointing. Not looking forward to the playoffs. Good players individually, not a good team.
They lost a road game called a playoff team by two goals, they hit like three posts and had a couple of questionable ones get by. Not a banner night, but then again they’re not all going to be. Nothing to jump off a cliff over, that’s for sure.

I'd love to go back to the dead puck era, because there was also no salary cap, and we wouldn't be discussing stuff like this, because the Leafs would have loaded up in free agency for the last few seasons (as they did in the early 00's).

As long as i am GM you wont be traded. For dubas to make that statement he should be fired. If yiur team isnt winning in the playoffs then you trade anybody to make the team better

No he didn’t. He had expiring ELC’s and a couple of grenades in zaitsev & marleau. Not to mention not much on the farm, and a bunch of ufas at key depth spots.
The blue line was
Rielly hainsey
Gardiner zaitsev
Borgman Polak
The top prospect was Jeremy Bracco.

Did they ever

The Good: the 1 line

The Bad: hello zebras

The Ugly: Jeebuzz did anyone see the GDT?

It's too bad some people get so wound up and abusive during a GDT. It's just a bunch of random comments. There is no sense losing your marbles over stuff.

Why are some of you so hung up on what a gm tells players or the media? Masai promised demar he was a raptor 4 life & 12 hours later the fun guy was on his way from San Antonio

Great theory except the fans don't run the team.
There are two seperate points in my post.

1). Toronto's management targets the wrong players at the deadline and wastes picks washed up guys like Boyle, Foligno and Plekanecs, rather than spending a package of quality assets to return a really good player, still in his prime, who is willing to stay.

2). Many fans terribly overrate the value of every pick / prospect in our system, making it difficult to even have a rational conversation amongst the fans, about upgrading the team.

For example, for many on the board, Toronto's 1st round pick and 2nd round pick are virtually untouchable, as is Rasmus Sandin, Timothy Liljegren, Nick Robertson, Rodion Amirov, Matthew Knies, Topi Niemela, Ronnie Hirvonen, Nick Abruzzese, Pontus Holmberg, Filip Kral, and anything else of value in the system.

The reason why teams like Boston and Tampa Bay are able to get the deadlines deals done that they do, is because they're actually willing to part with a number of those types of assets, for established players in their primes. Their fans would rather compete then think about how good they could be 5 years in the future, if everything plays out perfectly.

The difference is that Boston is willing to pay assets for the right pieces. Hall last year, now Lindholm. Proven, quality, NHL players that are still in their prime.

The problem with Leaf fans is that if we made the deal Boston did, Leaf fans would be in meltdown mode because we think every one of our picks / prospects is going to be a star, and will wind up being better than a proven, established player.

Weirdly, people will praise Boston for making the deal they did, but if Toronto paid a 1st round round pick, two 2nd round picks, Justin Holl and Topi Niemela for Lindholm, which is about as close I can get using Toronto assets, this board would absolutely meltdown.

We watch these other teams win and we wonder how they get there. Part of it is that they often mortgage their futures, for the right players, who they get multiple years of return out of.
Not to mention this team is in WIN NOW mode. Who the f*** knows if we're still even going to have Auston in 3 years. Get the f***ing pieces you need now and go for it. Contending teams trade futures and win. We just watched Tampa mortgage their future AGAIN because they plan on going for it a 3rd time. The thought process on this board is so baffling.

Am I the only one who thought we played a good game ? Matthews 2 off the post, Spezza hit one off the post. Nashville just buried their chances, scoring chances were tilted in our favor. That was a questionable penalty call that led to Nashvilles 4th goal, I'd like Kallgren to get that save but overall he played a strong game. It was a close game, Nashville just buried their chances and that was the difference, respectable effort. It be like that sometimes, on to the next one. Oh and Matthews/Marner looked dominant again.

Side note, I f***ing love how Ekholm and Josi play the game, absolute studs.

I thought we were a little slow in the 1st and gained steam after that. We had some great looks but couldn't bury enough chances. The 5th goal likely never happens if the 4th goal doesn't happen after a silly penalty. At worst, I'd give it a 6/10.

Because people on this board have agendas.

Because that's Mesai an this is Dubas
One is not like the other

what you gonna do with marchment when you got malgin ;)

:sarcasm:

Marchment isn't good enough to play on a team that features Kyle Clifford on our 4th line, along with combined 134 year old Jason Spezza and Wayne Simmonds.

In all seriousness, good for Mason. Florida has been a great fit for him. They fleeced us in the Marchment / Malgin deal.
