That line's play style doesn't mesh.

Tavares worked well with Marner in those two games because the pacing was a little more comfortable, and Marner's stop up, delay movement allowed Tavares to catch up and set up better.

Nylander and Kerfoot want to race up the ice and track meet style. But they're also separated from each other on opposite wings with a slow center unable to support.
I get depressed every time I hear that his winger has to stop and let him catch up……..all this for the princely sum of 11 million dollars……..and people wonder why the Leafs aren’t a contender.
the only thing sadder is we have 3 more years of this to deal with

Feels like the Leafs could have stickhandled around that if they weren't so gung ho on keeping Andreas Johnsson, Kasperi Kapanen and signing them to those $3 million + deals. Some combination of letting Marleau's deal run out and pro-actively moving on some of those younger guys for futures and the asset management could have looked different. But obviously that is with hindsight.
Just don't sign Tavares. Wouldn't be an issue at all.

Alternate angle of Clifford's penalty. Stupidest penalty of the season, the refs have no choice but to call the obvious infraction even if it impacts the result of the game.

Chychrun did the same and didn't get called. Obviously some confusion on what is/isn't allowed.

Lost to a good team on the road. No real shame in that.
3 posts? Maybe 3?
Kall was good, minus the scramble goal where he seemed slow to react.
And lastly, probably more importantly: this is what happens when Lili sits.

Goalie is not the issue here. Soft defense is. How often is Brodie on the wrong side of the player around the net leading to a goal??? The Habs beat you with the cross-check around the net. Haven't they learned anything? Crackdown on cross-checks you say? Yeah, right...

JT gels with Marner because they dig, win, pucks together. We can talk forever about what works, but if people aren’t putting in the effort to get the puck, it doesn’t matter. Marner is a workhorse, it all starts with effort. Unfortunately, right now Bill is passively waiting for someone else to grab a puck so he can blow the zone and suddenly turn It on. He’s been like this for weeks, odd cookie aside.

We've got the depthiest depth apparently. More depth than anyone's seen before.
It's big beautiful depth and had I been GM no one would've even tried scoring against us because they knew that they'd have to deal with me, and they couldn't because I know all the best coaching moves. Those other GMs secretly all want to make deals with me because I've always made the best deals.

Of course it was a better situation than most, most of the time guys are walking into tire fires thus the regime change.
It’s just disingenuous to suggest he was some sort of benefactor of an abundance of ELC talent and lots of depth. The guys his old boss had for $3m combined for multiple seasons he had to commit 30 to. Not to mention the $11m in boat anchors on the left wing & 2nd pair RD he was saddled with
When he took over the team was one season removed from icing 9 rookies. (2016-17)
All he had to do was ride one season out until Marleau was gone and exercise some patience until someone desired a RHD. (they are generally in demand)
But no, he had to fork out $11M on a UFA for a position that wasn't really a problem, far too early in the rebuild and thus turned those two contracts into immediate concerns.
Yes, he didn't sign them, but he sure owns a fair share of turning them into liabilities.

It's so weird because his numbers aren't horrible, and in fact they're quite good, and pretty close to excellent. Can you imagine what they would be if he actually played with some swagger and up to his full potential?

Lots of posters say how much better Will is than MM, if so great, but how about proving it by going into board battles and coming out with the puck 65% of the time like MM does, or how about just engaging at least 65% of the time!

Or how about moving your feet and working your way into prime scoring areas, or holding onto pucks and waiting for teammates to get themselves into better positions. Something that elite wingers do on a regular basis, and for all his faults and bad habits there is an elite winger in there and 90 points should be attainable considering his talent level.

JT and Nylander are not on the same planet as Marner and Matthews right now. Clifford sucks and I'm sick of this team insisting on playing either him or Simmonds every game. I just want to see one game where we ice the best possible group of players.
And then get beat up and pushed around

Just as I started to think Clifford was looking better, he goes and pulls a stupid move like that and blows the game we had a chance to come back in.

JT gels with Marner because Marner is a hell of a player. Marner could make my Grandma look good. And she skates at the same speed JT does.

as sad as it is to say, MArner and MAtthews need to be split up. They can each drive a line which is more than JT or WN can say right now.

Nylander - Matthews - Bunting

Kerfoot - Tavares - Marner

JT was also -3 last night, JT with Marner was a different player during Matthews' suspension, JT had his best year with Marner in his entire career. It looks like Keefe just likes the idea of a dominant line which is fine if there's another reasonably competent/productive line backing it up, the question is does JT and Nylander have enough chemistry to be the backup line? Earlier in the year JT and Nylander were having very good seasons, Nylander is in the midst of his most productive year offensively so the potential of them together does seem excellent but on the +/- scale they are both negatives so they need help beyond Kase or Kerfoot.

Can't win them all, so Leafs are going to lose some games to good teams that is understood.

Its the losses to the bad teams that bother me most.
you play good teams in the playoffs, not bad teams.

we need to beat good teams.

losing to bad teams just exposes the team for what it is.
