And you'd still be wrong

Go ahead and list all the other teams with second line centres pacing for 78 points over 82 games
I'm talking 5 on 5. With our PP, they'll all get points. Christ, you and me would rack up 15 points if you switch us for JT on that unit

I'm just trying to figure out how often this happens...

Does anybody else know if any of the contenders, Florida, Tampa Bay, Boston, Colorado, Calgary, Minnesota, have blown a 4 goal lead for a loss this year? I'm sure it's happened, I'm just curious how common it is for a good team to have it happen to them? Can't remember the last time I saw it among the top teams.

Me, too...but, if you have to face Tampa you LOVE that Matthews put a hatty on him in Tampa. We're going to go as Matthews and Mitch go. That game was big. So, was this one.

My point was, originally, is I knew we would have people rationalizing this loss who made a huge deal out of the win over Tampa, and that is not balanced. Both games were HUGE games and Leafs came up big in one and suffered a crushing defeat in another. Both say something about this team, not just one.
3 on 3 OT loss is not a crushing defeat. Goalies were off for both teams and this is the game you get.

5 of 7 goals (all but goals 3 and 7) were not on the goalies at all. Almost all were prime shooting positions, and on many our goalie made the first save but nobody was taking guys in front for the rebound.

The 3rd goal though ... f***, that was terrible. Like, insanely awful, about as bad as it gets, and that was a huge one in terms of score/momentum. We were on the PP up 5-2, game in control, then Kallgren lets in a truly atrocious shorty, and suddenly it's a game again, 5-3 in the 2nd. You could tell the Leafs were shook and the Panthers energized, Willie took a hooking call right after because IMO he didn't want to allow a shot on Kallgren at all after that stinker.

The game winner on Campbell - I wouldn't call it a bad goal, sliding across on an odd man rush like that there's going to be gaps, but it was certainly stoppable if he'd managed to keep his pad tight to the ice. Campbell did make a bunch of good saves though, and anyone blaming goals 4-6 on him is nuts, they were all basically unstoppable. Despite allowing 4 goals in half a game, he was quite good, which says a lot about our team D in this game.

Team D is definitely the main issue here, we simply were not properly clearing or covering the front of the net. But that one real bad goal on Kallgren felt like a big momentum swing to me, watching the game.

Oh well, we've been playing mostly terrific hockey, it was a B2B against arguably the best team in the league, and we still got a point. 11 of a possible 12 points over our last 6 games, despite a really tough schedule (5 of 6 top notch - Florida twice, Tampa, Carolina and Boston, just 1 soft game against the Jets). 2nd half of this game was pretty brutal, but it doesn't sting so bad with how well we've been playing recently.

Also mind numbing to me Mikheyev doesn’t play in OT. Seems like a no brainer, imagine him skating full blast at a forward skating backwards trying to play D.

Honestly, I think an Engvall Mikheyev shock troop would probably do some unique damage in OT. JT had a brilliant chance to finish it if he wasn't hooked but you can kind of see the pros and cons of having him out there: can get stranded in open ice and run out of gas. Wins faceoffs but if he's not wheeling, then you can lose possession and burn up more energy chasing. Pros and cons.

You didn't address the 5v5 argument though. We have an entire year's sample size of middling play 5v5. And 11 million for 78 points in 2022 is MASSIVELY overpaid.

He was a UFA signing, any top UFA is going to be massively overpaid. Its the nature of the business. He was overpaid the minute he signed the deal. That still doesnt negate having a nearly ppg-producing second line centre.

Round 1, game 7, don't care who the opponent is.
Toronto has a 5-1 lead early in the 2nd period.

On a scale of 1 (too scared to watch) to 10 (break out the champagne) how confident are you they win the game?

Personally, I'd be about a 2. Probably turn it off, go for a walk and fully expect when I turn the game back on mid-way through the 3rd it's 5-4, or 5-5.

Also Florida just had a 4-goal comeback on the weekend.

They'll get shut down in the playoffs.... it probably won't be the Leafs, but some team will. Maybe Boston ;)

Worth noting this is back to back starts Bobrovsky has been pulled.
We had 7 powerplays as well. When was the last time your heard of a team getting 7 powrplay opportunities and blowing a 4 goal lead in the process and taking the loss? That has to be a rare feat of futility lol.

Not sure but this is the 2nd time Florida has been down by 4 and come back to win 7-6 in OT in the last week. They just did this to New Jersey when they were down 6-2.

I wasn't comfortable with Muzzin out there too much tonight. He's sort of lost in the track meet and roaming around with his head down a lot. Good that he scored but he looks rusty and I'm just nervous he'll get Stevens/Lindros steam rolled.

Leafs in 5. Panthers are not built to handle our offence. Leafs will light them up. They should be shit scared if they have to encounter us in the playoffs.

Keefe will do what's right on the D don't worry.

Him and Engvall should be before Tavares and Nylander

Matthews Marner
Mikheyev Engvall
Kerfoot Nylander
Tavares

Easily. But politics take over and the captain will play.

It’s a simple game, play the speed demons with all that extra ice.

New Jersey. Exactly the team that I want to Toronto to be in the conversation with lol...

So much focus on Florida being excellent at coming back. Toronto should be good enough to hold onto a 4 goal lead, in a game in which they chase the opposition's starting goalie and they get 7 powerplay opportunities.
