It’s possible. But why do you think that? Did you watch the Washington series?

They didn’t look good at all. They were a missed empty net from going down 3-1.

Caps played them very well

Caps are an experienced team. Also Panthers were lazy earlier on with bobrovsky giving some ridiculous goals against to boot.

Tampa is a much weaker team compared to the teams they had for cup runs. Panthers on the other hand are an improved roster compared to last season. Only way i see tampa beating panthers is if Vasi goes god mode else panthers will get that series wrapped up in 5 or 6 games IMO

Let's be honest he thought matthews, tavares, marner and gang were better than they are.

33 million is just too much for what they provide.

Additionally, I kept saying don't count your cap chickens before they're born but many here kept talking about a cap over $100mm.

Probably kids who didn't have enough experience to remember 20% mortgages.

Poop happens.

If Dubas was a hedge fund manager he would probably be sued by many people for not hedging against risks.

So Tampa should’ve had 10 penalties a game? Your level of delusion is astonishing.

How am I being delusional? The play was called according to the rulebook. It was a penalty. You want to complain about the consistency of reffing, about other missed calls, be my guest. But the refs called it by the book on that occasion.

Thanks to so many posters for making the discussion of the Leafs season, interesting, informative and enjoyable. It was a very good season, that ended in bitter disappointment. I don't believe we have to make sweeping changes to the personnel of the team, as much as we need to change the personnel on the team. No matter who we bring in, our core is going to stay the same, and until they learn what it takes to win, it won't matter. This team was good enough to go much further, but at this juncture, our top guys, Marner and Matthews, haven't taken that next step, to lead their team in the playoffs. Great players, no question, and getting better, more rounded... but they just aren't there. No team, can afford to give away games, like we did not showing up for Game 2, Game 4 and even the first period in Game 5. When this team is playing it's best, with intensity and effort, they can play with anyone.. but, they don't always do that. We can talk about coaching, but you know this really is an internal drive thing, a will to win... not a coachable. More than anything else, this is a Matthews thing. Love the player, he's really a special talent... but to win, he's got to take this to the next level, and in leadership too... He, and the other elite, need to set the example, be the hardest working guys in these down games, and really get the team going... and it's not there... maybe yet, maybe not at all.

We are going to see reactionary trades, fire coaches, fire GM, and so on... but the reality is... Matthews in particular, Marner too... these guys need to be better leaders, and have the will to win, if this group will find success. Guys like Yzerman, Sakic... took them a while too. I mean, that's what you hope right, eventually they learn.... All these reactionary calls for trades etc... they won't help one bit... either this group has it... or, we wait until the next rebuild and maybe then.....

We've got some great weather, it's a great time of year in Canada, and I'm headed outside for now. I'll be back for the draft, and then the start of next season. Again, thanks to those who share their opinions, and knowledge... Cheers

One thing no ones mentioned yet is f*** you Bogosian. That guy didn’t leave us because we couldn’t afford to keep him. He chose Tampa over sticking with us and signed with them for less than a million. He ended up being a big part of why so many of our shots were getting blocked in game 7.

He left because of canadas pandemic rules and not being able to see his family.

That’s not wrong

Scanning today's sports obituaries for the Leafs, the team is almost universally being praised for losing. That's what happens when the team's owners also own the press - literally. It's exactly the same as daily legacy news where the owner dictates the consistently fictional narrative.

I used to love listening to talk radio immediately after Leaf games because in Ontario there were at least two phone-in shows for the fans to commiserate/share/praise/vent. Now there are none, none allowed to exist.
Because for the most part that is garbage content and of no use, no one wants to hear Rick from Stayner all loaded up on rye and cokes talking about how they need to trade nylander for a #6D and a knuckle dragger 4th liner

I am finally getting around to reading some leafs players comment. Marner yapping about how "sick and tired of losing" they are is rich.

Game 6 OT: he turns over the puck; does not pressure the puck carrier; Holl SUCKS ASS in the d-zone letting point go in uncontested

A team or player(s) that are sick and tired of losing do not make shit ass plays like that. Attention to detail matters!!!

Something that I think virtually no one acknowledges about Tampa: they conserved themselves during significant stretches of this round. They played just as well as they needed to play to win the round. The Leafs didn't get manhandled by an aggressive desperate opponent, they got beat by a measured effort by an experienced team that didn't go all for the opening round of the playoffs. Tampa lost zero players to attrition in the 1st round (it appears). Several games were regular season level of intensity. I'm convinced Tampa had way more in the (intensity/competitve) tank that the Leafs didn't force them to use. IMO, this wasn't the close miss it appears it was.

And a new avatar just dropped:

yup they were taking it easy

Y'know they actually played a pretty good series. First time I haven't had a terrible taste in my mouth since Washington '17. In every year for the last 4 years they've choked spectacularly. That didn't happen this year. They just lost.
The core were our best players easily which was nice to see for once (all of them playing well). Unfortunately like no depth players showed up at all, same with the PP.

Call it whatever you want. Anyone that knows hockey could see that team had the "it" factor and was going to steamroll teams in the playoffs. For what it's worth I see something similar with Florida this year. When the Leafs have this swagger then you might have a point.

Arguably the best player in the world??? The best player in the world put his sorry ass Oilers teammates on his back and dominated that series. Swap Matthews for McDavid and the Leafs are a signicantly better team and the Oilers miss playoffs.

"Robbed of this ECF quality win" there's so much wrong with that statement I don't even know where to begin
It all makes sense when you understand some people posting here are actually Dubas fans first and foremost and Leaf fans second.

generational franchise centre ? lol you should probably reduce the intake of whatever your using bud , Mathews grabbed his bag from the only team and GM in the world that would play an ELC player 11 million and set himself up financially so he would be free to go anywhere he wants after this deal , thats why the NMC in his final year , it's not to keep him in Toronto it's to prevent us dealing him somewhere he doesn't want to go , he will not be re-signing in Toronto .

If he wanted to be a Leaf for Life he would have demanded an 8 year deal , He demanded the shorter term for a reason .
You should get a lotto ticket! Jebus, these takes are bad. Also I intake books. You should try it. Maybe then you would understand the difference between " you're " and " your"

You know I’m a fan of the numbers and using them to gain a broad picture of what a team does or doesn’t do well, but in the moment of game 7 I really don’t care for expected anything, he was the second best goalie and that was the difference. Sometimes you need your guy to bail you out. I also do think either were Freddy five hole level of stinky, but they were both not great and stops you gotta get to win playoff rounds.
We always knew which team had the best goalie and if the best goalie wins, there was no point in even playing the games. I said it before the series - don't expect Campbell to win games for us, all you can expect is for him to keep it close. Our offence is the high priced talent and they're the ones who need to win games for us. Campbell did his job, but in game 7 our offence lost the battle against Vasi and to me, that was the difference.

It amazes me how losing AGAIN is thought as "the step in right direction"

btw most of this stuff is coming from dubas fans not "Leafs" fans. I havent heard one dubasite even make mention of Holl's gaffe in Game 6 OT goal. not one!

Not one of them have called out the joke of the powerplay, no adjustments, team not showing up to play in Games 2, 4 and then turtling in Game 6 3rd period with only 4 shots on goal.

This is what pisses hardcore Leafs fans. Because they see where the loyalties truly lie for them
It's not. The way they played in the series, and especially game 7 was a step in the right direction. The last 3 game 7's we lost by a combined score of 11-2, this time we faced our toughest opponent yet, we played our assess off and in the end we only lost because they have Vasi who showed in game 7 why he is considered to be the best goalie in the world. The way we played in game 7 though is most definitely progress, not sure how anyone can argue otherwise.

Florida will probably make quick work of Tampa. How much you wanna bet?
If you're so confident then go ahead and bet, there are many online sports betting sites who will take our action.

My god. This tweet encapsulates the pro Dubas crowd to a T!!!!

It's so bang on it is scary.

I felt Matthews was an almost no show on the offensive side. Not impactful.

Never again will I ever think he is better than McDavid in any way. McDavid is the same player in the playoffs, Matthews is a ghost.
McDavid is significantly the best player in the league. If you watched the oilers game last night, he decided the outcome because he could and knew it. Dominant
