We deserved to win, based on our play, but then... we deserved to win the Columbus series too.
We got screwed by the officials, taking away a goal tonight and gifting the 5-on-3 last night, but then... we got screwed by the officials against the Bruins too (and more generally over the past five years).
We got screwed by the scheduling, playing what should be a conference final opponent in the first round, but then... we played one of the worst teams in the league in Montreal last year and still lost.
The bottom line is that you have to figure out a way to overcome and win. They didn't. It is that simple. Even if it was a better effort, the 'demons' of years past were not absent. They didn't hurt us per se (at least, in the same sense as years past), but in the OT last game and for much of the 3rd tonight, they were still there. Heck, they essentially took Game 4 off, handing a freebie to Tampa.
No idea what is next for this team. This was -- on paper and based on regular season play -- arguably the second best team in the league behind Colorado. We're going to lose some important depth pieces due to cap limitations. Tavares is going to be another year older, Muzzin is going to be another year older. Matthews only two years out from FA. Our competitive window is closing quickly and I don't even know where to start to begin salvaging it.
Beyond that, I don't know if I want to watch next season. Another painful 82 games that mean nothing, because they can't get it done when it matters. Might well be time for some time away from the sport for me, but we'll see...
