Seemed like a very motivated Calgary team which we hung in there for a while until Jack threw the team's effort into the toilet. Hope Jack gets back to his old self soon. We had 4 penalties in the first period and still managed 18 shots on net. I recorded the game and skipped through once it was 4-1 but before that, I liked our effort. I give credit to Calgary, they were hitting everything that moved and Markstrom was strong. I'm glad Calgary is in the other conference.

You simply can’t outshot the other team to an almost 2:1 ratio and not be good. Sorry that doesn’t make sense. Doesn’t matter where the shots are from When you have almost 50 shots vs 26 and the quality of their shots were worse

I could not disagree with you more on this one.

It does matter where the shots are from. It does matter if you are battling in front of the net to take away the eyes. It does matter if you're grinding for rebounds.

NHL goaltenders are good, most of the time, I'd take one 2-on-1 odd man rush over 10 of the garbage weak ass crap we threw towards Markstrom tonight.

In seriousness I dont know what this will do to Campbell’s mental health. Poor guy seems fragile and playing badly for this current stretch must not be good for him.

and if that’s the case, we are screwed. again.

UFA right ? Contract is killing him . Look at Rielly signed and his game improved. Load off your mind .
ye, he even said at the ASG that its been weighing on him a bit, and with his mental track record, thats not good at all lol.

In before the all the negative comments overwhelm.

That was a heck of an entertaining game. Two teams with different strengths. I think a very useful measuring stick for the Leafs.

*Liljegren's best game as a Leaf. Activating, not backing down on D (heck, you wanna face Lucic ). Time to give him more minutes to see where we are heading towards the TDL.
*Matthews continues to amaze me when he has the puck, as much as we praise his shot, his stick handling in tight is fabulous.
*Matthews line was again dominant, all three playing well.
*@Tonedog mentioned during play, "Thought 88 would disappear after the Tkachuk hit. Jt has just been ass since Covid." Though we don't know, I'm guessing there is a correlation. I've struggled with my endurance since contracting the virus, I can imagine if JT is having some after effects his game would suffer.
*Nylander is having one of his floating periods. He can still amaze, but he isn't as engaged as he was earlier in the season.
*Could we take a moment to appreciate Morgan Rielly.
*Mikheyev and Engvall are carbon copies of each other. There's value in one, but I'd consider moving the other at the TDL.
*For those harping on Campbell, two of the goals were off deflections, another through a 3 body screen that he never saw off the stick and found the top corner. Whadya going to do?

We were the better team. Markstrom is quite the presence in net, huge. Tanev is such a solid defenseman. Calgary has some good players. During the game I mentioned I thought the Leafs would be inspired by Morgan's play after the hit on Kase. I was wrong, and a theme that I worry about. I'm not suggesting Dubas look for thugs at the TDL, but I do believe there needs to be an injection of piss and vinegar on this team. Calgary played with a strong, physical presence. The Leafs didn't. To get through the playoffs you can't be on the receiving end all the time and win 16 games. We have the talent to win 16, where I think we can improve on the chances of doing so is gaining some gumption.

A good game overall, fun to watch and instructive. I like our team, I just think a few tweaks would make it better.

 Nice and blunt about it. You're correct.

I guess a positive we can take from this game at least is the Leafs have a long streak of dominant 3rd periods going. Good trait to have for the playoffs especially elimination games where we seem to just give up in the past.

Score effects or not we have the fire power to come back in any game so we need those 3rd period saves.

Absolutely, we certainly do, and we've done it against multiple teams lately.

Definitely a positive that this Leafs team doesn't completely fold when they fall behind like previous iterations.

…and what grade A chances did Calgary throw on us

I phrased my point wrong, when the quality of shots against was what it was, our offensive output should’ve been enough

I think it’s safe to agree Markstrom was good. Campbell wasn’t, but the team also didn’t convert their chances in time and it bit them. Defence also messed up on 2nd goal and a bit on the 5th. All in all, small mistakes and goaltending errors cost us

For me, a true cup contending Leafs team would look like this...

Bunting-Matthews-Marner
Forward-Tavares-Nylander
Mikeheyev-Forward-Kase
Engvall-Kampft-Simmonds
Spezza

Reilly-Brodie
Chychrun-Defenseman
Sandin-Schenn
LilJegren

Goalie
Campbell

Essentially, Campbell should be the #2 in a split. Mrazek's contract has to be moved and Campbell has to be extended, for cheap. Kerfoot is expendable in order to pay a strong two way center for the 3rd line. Chychrun could be an upgrade over Muzzin, for cheaper, enabling you to spend some money on a #4, along with money you're saving by shipping Holl out.

Muzzin+Holl+Kerfoot+Mrazek

That's 15.6 million for 5 players. Chychrun is 4.5 million. That leaves 11.1 million for a reliable goalie, a forward to slot into your top 6, a 3C and partner for Chychrun.
So basically a 100M salary cap. Or maybe Matthews gets hurt for the season and comes back for the playoffs.

Reverse the goalies , leafs 10- 1 . Nobody is talking anymore .

Hard shots deflected 15 feet and in are almost impossible to stop, unless it hits you it's generally going to find the net. Nobody was going to stop that screened shot, top corner glove side off a 3 player screen, Campbell had no chance on that one.

Hmm interesting. Keefe who is negative after losses is positive today. Makes you think the problem was the goalie and not the team being terrible for losing a game.

Bruins fan here looking for news on kase? I saw that hit and wondered did he come back? He was playing well and hoped he would stick this time. Guy has so much talent but cant catch a break.

So sign that 3.5 mil contract 5 years but he wants Anderson money.
at this point give him a 1 year contract and if he goes back to normal jack then u re-negotiate in the offseason lol, i cant justify giving him 5 years at the moment. not enough of a "good" jack campbell track record over the course of his career yet unfortunately.

They had multiple on man rushes, multiple instances of getting completely behind our defense, etc. Until the third, when the game was over, I'd have traded Calgary's chances for ours in a heartbeat.

Goaltending definitely cost us the game tonight, 100%, no debate there. But this was not just a case of a good game with bad goaltending.

I mean we've been actually goalied multiple times this season. This wasn't one of them.

Markstrom was....fine. Too easy.

1-0 leafs and he gives up a soft one
