I saw the opposite of quality defense tonight.

We gave up maybe one good chance in the entire first half of the game. They had absolutely nothing going against us. We heavily outshot them on their own PP, and they had a crap ton of PP opportunities.

Even in the second half, it was not much worse. We had to open up a little bit and take more risks because our goalie spotted them a large lead, but even then, Calgary had very few high quality chances that game.

That is quality defense, and a game that should not have resulted in more than maybe 2 GA with even a decent goaltending performance. If the goalies were swapped, it could have easily been a 7-0 game based on how each respective team and goalie played.

Oh... and need to move on from the Holl experiment, that guy is the opposite of killer instinct. Gonna be hard to win playoff games when you have a defenseman of his size afraid of physical hockey as he is. I cringe watching him act like he's trying to play physical.

Our second pair also plays like a third pairing. Muzzin needs to go in the offseason with both Mrazek and Campbell. I'd like to see jt waive as well but not gonna happen.

True, absolutely Campbell was bad, but the saves he did make were far more difficult than anything Markstrom had to do tonight.

Might we have rallied without that third backbreaker that was a puck any NHL goaltender would save? Maybe.

But saying this game was good enough and blaming Campbell only is a cop out.
You are correct there was a portion of the game that gave many of us PTSD. Flames went full slot defence mode while Leafs piled up the xGF with less than optimal looks. Passing lanes were gone and they sat back waiting for mistakes

It wasn't the case in the 3rd though. Leafs were the better team no doubt and Campbells biggest softie of the night came that period. We were getting the puck into the slot again. Top 2 lines had some good chances. Some more whiffs by Kerfoot and that post by Matthews. So Markstrom didn't even have to do anything on those.

I thought we played ok, some defensive lapses but overall I thought we did enough to either win or come close

Campbell is starting to concern me now, he melted down and never looked like the guy in net earlier in the season

I think Mrazek needs to play a bit now, we have a 3.8M 1B for a reason so let's ride him for awhile and looking on the bright side I'm doubting 6M with term is Soups next contract :sarcasm:

Pretty much. If you are going to be misrable after every loss, just stop watching. Come back when they win a round. Twiiter is a disaster.

haha i stopped watching midway through the 2nd period, and im in a much better mood because of it, when im not having fun watching this year i just watch something else...and it feels great!

Stop it , 48 shots with 10 forwards. Campbell was off . He needs to sign or trade him

Yeah and we outshot Montreal and lost. And outshot the Blue Jackets and lost.

Campbell was off, no one is defending him - awful game from him.

But the team wasn't good tonight. Anywhere.

Other than the Kerfoot tip, which wasn't really all that well placed, I honestly can't think of one hard save Markstrom had to make.

Campbell had to stop breakaways, multiple odd man rushes, etc.

Did we have ONE odd man rush this game?
What breaks what odd man rushes? The two ended up in the back of our net. Had markstrom played Like Campbell we’d have scored 6-7 as routine shots would’ve beaten him like they did Campbell

Sure, that's score effects after the game was over. Congrats, we're good when the other team stops trying.

Campbell was bad, but that was not a good game with bad goaltending. That was a bad game with horrible goaltending on top.

The 2C is ppg this season while being reliable in his own zone.. he’s far from the problem
hmmm sorry but gonna have to disagree with that, hes kindof an issue, he used to take over games, willy has vastlyyyyyyy outplayed him this year and he wasnt great last year for long stretches either. he hasnt been terrible, but he certainly shouldnt be making 11 million with how much of a passenger hes been. just my 2c.

For me, a true cup contending Leafs team would look like this...

Bunting-Matthews-Marner
Forward-Tavares-Nylander
Mikeheyev-Forward-Kase
Engvall-Kampft-Simmonds
Spezza

Reilly-Brodie
Chychrun-Defenseman
Sandin-Schenn
LilJegren

Goalie
Campbell

Essentially, Campbell should be the #2 in a split. Mrazek's contract has to be moved and Campbell has to be extended, for cheap. Kerfoot is expendable in order to pay a strong two way center for the 3rd line. Chychrun could be an upgrade over Muzzin, for cheaper, enabling you to spend some money on a #4, along with money you're saving by shipping Holl out.

Muzzin+Holl+Kerfoot+Mrazek+Spezza's cap hit

That's 15.6 million for 5 players. Chychrun is 4.5 million. That leaves 11.1 million for a reliable goalie, a forward to slot into your top 6, a 3C and partner for Chychrun.

I agree 100% with this. I like jt a lot but he's slowing down quickly.

You simply can’t outshot the other team to an almost 2:1 ratio and not be good. Sorry that doesn’t make sense. Doesn’t matter where the shots are from When you have almost 50 shots vs 26 and the quality of their shots were worse

Lots of chances on offense. Campbell didn't give them a chance though and he's been unreliable for a month.

Dubas has to address some bottom end grit, look at the shit guys like Ritchie were getting away with. No one except Simmonds and Bunting does that.
You didn't see Reilly go after Zadorov after the Kase hit?

10 forwards remember, goalie oh wait Allstar goalie wants 6 mil a year better stop everything. He doesn’t have he mind in the game last month or so . Contract eating him .

I agree with you. If Markstrom was as bad as Campbell, we could've won that game. If Campbell was as good as Markstrom, we could've won that game.

Let's be real, goaltending is not going to end up Leafs' strength going into the playoffs this year, and we will be outgoalied against most potential playoff opponents. We don't have a $6M goalie in Markstrom - wish we did. It's time to accept that and have the places we spent our dollars show the f*** up.

That is not an acceptable game from the defense, from the forwards, from anyone.

I guess a positive we can take from this game at least is the Leafs have a long streak of dominant 3rd periods going. Good trait to have for the playoffs especially elimination games where we seem to just give up in the past.

Score effects or not we have the fire power to come back in any game so we need those 3rd period saves.
