Tampa went out of their way to make it a pissy game. Sending a message or not, I think it just shows they are concerned with the likely first round. If the Leafs have any backbone this should backfire for the bolts.

Clifford my God though, if you are going to take a 5 minute, make it count. Force perry into eating a few fists and turtling or something instead of whatever that was.
It looked like Harry Potter was casting a spell.

The one plus from this loss may be that a good way to ensure a team brings their A game into a playoff series is if they got trashed last time out. The Leafs will hopefully recognize that anything less than their best against this team will mean another quick, painful playoff exit.

If Kase gets healthy then there is no reason whatsoever we should be rolling such a weak 4th line.

IMO you could comfortably have a 4th line with Kampf-Kase on it when Kase is healthy and still adequately fill out the rest of the lineup.

And with how many NHL D this team has, there is absolutely no reason at all to force a Muzzin-Holl pairing with the amount of other options there is (if Muzz can ever get healthy).
Problem with Kase is how will he last during a physical series? Nice to have but I would plan not for him to be there.

Unfortunately if Leafs play dirty they will pay for it by parading to and from the penalty box.

Games like this remind me why the league is a joke.
I know. It's like a lot of the people here have forgotten the two series against the Bruins. You know, the ones where a softer iteration of THIS team somehow had 5x as many penalties as the penalty-league-leading Boston Bruins?

In that infamous Game 2 of the 2019 series where Kadri got suspended a second time. Boston had 3 penalties the entire game. One of them was a puck over the glass call which is one of the few penalties that has zero room for interpretation in the NHL.

I know everyone is not a fan of Game Management, but the last game vs the Lightning is a good example of how to do it properly if you're gonna do it.

At the beginning of the game, the ref called 10 minute misconducts on Maroon and Simmonds. This let them know that it wasn't gonna be one of those games.

Than he called one on each team for the rest of the game and the game was relatively clean from that point onwards. The Leafs penalized once more in the last two minutes but it was a 6-2 game by then and it really didn't matter. There were no dirty scrums, no dirty late hits, no retaliation type stuff that entire game. Ref game managed well.

They actually played well for about half the game and then Kallgren fell apart because he is not an NHL goalie

The "tonight's game is/was meaningless" takes may want to be revisited if tonight helps Tampa out of their recent funk & gets them geared up for the playoffs.

Inexcusable Leafs effort tonight, regardless of how little importance tonight's game had attached to it.

Appreciate the pushback though. Onwards
While not the end of the world, to declare this as 'meaningless' just shows are real lack of understanding sport.

If the Leafs don't know by now that in the playoffs you need to play your best no matter who you play, then that one game isn't going to make any difference.

Honestly Hutch at this point might even be a better option then Kallgren… Aside from his first couple games where he looked solid, he’s been pretty bad for a little while now.

…. and people wonder why many think not getting a competent backup at the trade deadline was a big oversight.
Not sure if it was an oversight or just a matter of market value and or supply and demand.
I know many were horny to land fluery but by all accounts he didn't want to come here, so that said, what could we have landed and what was the asking price?
Personally I've been doubtful of what our goaltending scouts are seeing, but I don't think dubas is the type to not see it or try to improve the team at every position.

After seeing the headlines about how Tampa hadn't won a regulation game against the playoffs and that Matthews was still out, you knew we were due for a stinker. I maybe watched 10 minutes of the first and a few snippets of the 2nd.

We're still the hottest team in the league and I cannot say that I care about the score at all tbh.

Nylander looks ready for the physicality of the playoffs. He and Kallgren must've been discussing post-game lasagna.

Why would he fight , he would be 2nd 3rd man in. He wants to play , dont sit in the box for nothing, in a nothing game. Used to say to my brother , dont get even , get a goal (hurts way more). Fight were it counts. Now Willy aint my brother and he obviously never heard that expression so there were no goal.
