I have no problems with Matthews and Marner, both had two points, five points through two games. I have no problem with Bunting, scored a big goal in his first game in the playoffs.
I do have a problem with how many penalties the Leafs took. You can't keep spotting Tampa Bay 5-7 powerplays a game and expect to win a series. Tampa has had 12-13 powerplays in TWO games against the Leafs, that's unacceptable. Yes, there were some dodgy calls, but most of the calls against the Leafs were legit.
Special teams was the deciding factor in this game, big time. Toronto went 0 for 4 on theirs, Tampa went 3 for 7.
Good first period minus the last 3 seconds, but that first goal was a bit of a lucky one by Tampa Bay.
Good second half of the third period, but too little, too late. Can't make a push back when the score is 5 to 1. Should've stayed disciplined and pushed back when it was 2 to 1.
I think Campbell looked a little indecisive on a few of his attempts to save, just didn't seem as sharp and confident. Not gonna overly hate on his game, but just some things I did notice. With that said, he has to be better in game 3. Can't have a .857% on the night and expect to give your team a chance to win, it just isn't happening.
I really have to let my frustrations out on one player and that goes to John Tavares. He has zero points in two games, that's just completely unacceptable from the captain, makes 11 million dollars, he doesn't get paid the big bucks to just win faceoffs, gotta contribute offensively. He's been pretty bad for much of 2022 and that isn't me talking shit just to talk shit, he's been REALLY bad offensively, slow, plodding, bad plays in the offensive zone, just isn't playing like a captain should be. VERY disappointed in him. What disappoints me most is in the back of my mind, I knew he'd be a mostly no show and outside of faceoffs and a few plays, he's been ineffective. That's just unacceptable.
EDIT Tavares has one secondary assist in game one. Point still stands.
Nylander and Tavares with 0 points in 2 games. They are our 3rd and 4th forwards that are expected to provide offense, they are NOT doing it.
Tavares and Nylander HAVE to be on the scoresheet in game 3, the first line can't do it all. They need support.
Put Spezza in game 3, sit Simmonds. It's time to give him a chance.

Yeah, aside from cheap calls, the Leafs need to be more disciplined and not go to the box. Being on the PK was an advantage in the first game but that's not a recipe for success other than we escaped disaster for one night. Can't play with fire like that.
Also, if you get a PP, make sure you bury those chances due to those even up calls down the road.

We’ve got this guys. Vasi played amazing, and we still got 3 goals on him. Tampa had everything go their way….boneheaded penalties by us, last second goal, Nylander and Tavares haven’t started the playoff series yet, defence very leaky tonight….we got this. And, Marner and Matthews have been awesome.

Maybe someone could run the numbers but I'm seeing a lot of penalties being called so far in these playoffs, especially for extra-curriculars...

Yes. Cap circumvention, holding ones face on the ice after a scuffle, dropping like a rock from a mid ice jab. These are actors and tbey were rewarded.
If it's a penalty a guy doesn't need to act like a soccer player.

it's hard to believe Bergeron is 5 years older than Tavares and has dealt with more injury problems in his career, and he just had one of his best seasons ever. I wonder what Tavares will look like 5 years from now

In spite of the 3 goals he was excellent tonight imo. That save on Liljergen when it was 1-0 was the biggest point in the game
We're getting to him, but also giving it back with how undisciplined we are

He's not tradable because of his contract. 11m players (with 4 years left) need to be 90+ point players to be worth it

I think it's almost time MLSE had a hard chat with Tavares no matter what happens. At $11 million we could keep most of this band together, and I just don't really want to see 4-5 guys moved in and out to make him work for much longer.

Then it should have been Morgan, he stuck it out through some tough years and didn't let it effect his development as a player, then signed a team friendly deal as a RFA

Exactly. Tampa bay can get away with whatever they want after the whistle. Seems weird that only Leafs players get penalized after the whistle.

Bullshit reffing aside (really wtf is the consistency at??) Boys were primed for first strike and had two perfect opportunities to change the outcome of this game and did not capitalize when Tampa did and really that almost buzzer 1st goal was the game. Boys had no momentum after that until the end when they decided they would come to play some playoff hockey again.
Did not like the bulk of this game, did not see the urgency mid game, playing against themselves and losing that step when things don't go the way they want.
I just want these guys to win hard or lose hard. The team has the tools, both teams layed some eggs... it's best of 5 now , no more excuses. No more questions after a series loss... Show up and either win hard or lose hard and I will respect them.
I think they can do it.
