Post-Game Talk: Leafs lose 5-3

Simmonds took dumb penalties. The second one was straight-up stupid cause he already knew how the refs were calling it.

Leafs finally got burned on the PK earlier in the game. The 1.4 second Hedman goal was a bad bounce after a sloppy sequence and the Kampf to Brodie miscue on the 3-1 goal was also an early backbreaker.

The mini comeback attempt was a good sign. Vasi is still beatable and prone to mental lapses. That's huge. Otherwise, the Leafs didn't go away, stayed in it but didn't show enough desperation on the 6 on 4. Seemed to miss some Spezza comeback magic and Tavares was just dreadful with the puck control out there with the pressure on.

Each game is different. If momentum meant something then the Leafs would have won tonight.

Take Simmonds/Cliffy out and put the softies in and watch as we get pummeled and no calls going our end. Then the talking heads on TSN&SN can say how we're soft and need grit.

Do people want 2018 Boston game 2 all over again? Because that's what you're getting. It's not Kadri, Clifford or Simmonds fault. The officiating has a different set of rules for us. Why our fanbase cannot understand this is beyond me.

When the Leafs play their game, they beat Tampa. Not sure enough of the players realize this.

Played like scared pukes for large swaths of that game.

Refs need to either put the whistles away or call a fair game. They made sure the game was over when Tampa was up 3-1. I’ve never seen the Leafs get 5/6 PPs with a 2+ goal lead. It would never happen.

Refs were too much of an impact in this one. Tavares sucks.

Or he just needs to be committed 100% to a shadowing, defensive role and do it well and obviously well to the eye test.

Made TB work for it at the end. To be honest the Leafs outplayed them for the entire first and last half of the second.

Really it was just a bad 30 minutes (and 1 second) in the middle of the game where they spent half of it on the PK.

The one they scored was a 5 on 3 too. 5 on 4 just hasn't been working at all.

I think games like this showed why Keefe said before the series he wanted to reunite Willy and Tavares. Lines 2 and 3 currently just don’t provide any kind of offence.

I don't think they can let the Perry, Maroon, Bellemare clown show continue to have any factor out there. If they're out there, throw the first line out and put strength on the stooges.

Great first from the Leafs, until that lucky break for the Hedman goal… they came out with energy again in the 2nd and that Vasilevskiy glove save really was the turning point as Perry scores a minute later. Toronto didn’t have it really from the Perry goal on. Gotta get one in Tampa, preferably game 3

Let's be real. If the game was called fairly, every penalty Toronto took were ignored when Tampa did it. They called one single time that Campbell was intentionally roughed out of 5+.

No one should be surprised at Tavares' play. He doesn't have another gear for the playoffs.
The Simmonds penalties were the killers, but good to see they made it interesting in the third. Last thing they needed was to go into Tampa after losing 5-1.

Now, they have to get at least a split in Florida, then they come home at worst tied and a chance to go up 3-2.
