Post-Game Talk: Leafs lose 5-3

Tavares is getting a lot of heat. And rightfully so. He's supposed to be a superstar center giving us a lethal 1-2 punch. Feasting on weaker matchups. Unfortunately it isn't working out that way.

He needs to step up and be a factor in this series. He was hurt last year unfortunately. Prior to that he hasn't provided this team much edge in the playoffs.

I would love to see him turn it around.

Everyone hating on Simmonds needs a head shake, he wasn't great tonight and that one penalty Bellemare flopped big time. If you guys haven't noticed he's been the sponge of focus from maroon and Perry, it's the other guys that have to do their job.

Weber wouldn't have been that late to either of the plays. He needs to be in better position for post whistle shots

Maroon would just head lock dudes honestly that's the better play when you're that late and come in that agressive you're going to get called for it

Did Keith explain why we were so agressive with pinching the D? By the end of the game kucherov was basically just floating the blue line to try to get breaks they were that low

Not sure what it was like for Simmonds before the Leafs but the officials in the game literally call penalties on Simmonds like he's committing a criminal act just being on the ice. To the point where it just makes me uncomfortable that it limits his ability to do a job, aka be a tough guy.

Playing Nylander with Tavares helps JT's stats and worsens Willy's, and doesn't really help the team win. Same with Mikheyev.

Nylander and Mikheyev should be playing with another good skater like Kerfoot or Engvall.

Simmonds has to sit next game, no excuse for those stupid penalties. That ultimately cost us the game, 2 absolutely stupid plays after the whistle. You'd think he would have learned after the first one.
 
I was at the game tonight. It honestly was poorly officiated. The Boosh penalty was an absolute joke. I’m glad the refs want to call it tight but the 17-6 minute advantage really didn’t reflect the reality of the game. Very encouraging to see the boys not give up even down 5-1 and the crowd legit believed they could come back after the shorty. The crowd was the best I’ve ever heard it tonight.

Imagine how much better the Leafs would have been without signing Tavares, and allocating money elsewhere.

He's the captain and a complete anchor

The playoffs cant be the same as the regular season where one line carries us to victory.

We cant have willy and tavares missing in action. 18 million doing nothing.

We cant have .850 goaltending

Pasternak injured canes goalie
Marchand gives two hander to replacement
Perry attacks campbell
Maroon attacks campbell

Simmonds and clifford shouldnt be taking penalties against perry and company they should be running Vasi

Tavares put up elite defence tonight but you want to replace him for an inferior player because the inferior player can provide elite defence.

His job was to beat the shit out of one of them when they got chippy in game 1, not the same passive BS as every other year and let the other team be the aggressors.

We completely lost our mojo after his penalty. We were playing well in the 1st and into the 2nd and we had the momentum after our goal. But that unnecessarily bad penalty ultimacy halted our hopes and fundamentally cost us the game. We need to play to our strengths and focus on our abilities. Not pretend to be something we aren't.
 
My take is the leafs wanted to set the tone with Clifford in game 1 and simmonds in game 2. All those guys did was take penalties. i will echo what others have said, the leafs need to stay out of the box. If they do, they can win this series. So I’d bench simmonds and Clifford for the rest of this series, go all skill, dress spezza. You need to make adjustments mid series, this is one of those adjustments keefe needs to make.

Leafs finally have a nice balance of grit to go with the skill for a good month now. We can't throw that away just because of the stupidity of one player.

The only adjustment they need to make is stay out the box with dumb penalties. Tampa is done if we keep this 5v5

Not a great game, Tampa were a lot better, the Leafs worse but a lot of what they did wrong looks correctable to me. I saw nothing to suggest they don't still have a good chance at winning the series but it was still a missed opportunity. Game 3 will be interesting (aren't they all).

He saw what Maroon and Perry were doing and thought he could get away with it too.

He was wrong, and being a Leaf for a few years now, he should know that.
