Easily? it completely depends on what system he is put into. Does Draisaitl put up 100 points away from McDavid on the PP (he puts up a lot of points here) and on a team like the NYI? I don't think he'd do well in a defensive system like theirs. Saying he is easily a 100pt player away from the system and players he is with is a little out there.

Drai would put up 100 points away from McDavid yes...

While McDavid has been injured he actually puts up the same or more points.

They don't play 5v5 together very often and his offensive IQ allows him to play with anyone.

Yea I think he would. If barzal can be a 75 point player in that system, I think draisaitl can put up 100. He’s the 2-3 best player in the league. He’d make that teams pp good by having an option for barzal to pass to. His spot on his off hand is deadly, similar to ovechkin laine and Matthews. He’d probably have similar wingers as Bailey Nelson Wahlstrom Lee are probably similar to what is in Edmonton right now. He wouldn’t PK so that would take away an area of fatigue.

Helped that McDavid, RNH and a bunch of other Oilers were not dressed for various reasons including Covid also. :wg:

Nylander shot of backboards, tipped by JT and kicked into his own net by Smith and TJ Brodie missing the net by a couple feet and have it bounce of a crowd and back into the net and an empty netter with 15 secs left looked more like 4 Leaf clover and lucky rabbits foot type luck in this one. Not sure I classify that is what good teams do.

Take the 2 points and forget this game ever happened and move on the next one.

Because they usually beat us with a full lineup?

Leafs apparently offered over $4m x 8 (and we al know 38 year old Zach Hyman will not be playing in the NHL), which makes the maximum delta of the deal $6.5m, which works out to $0.92m per year over 7 years. So, yeah, it was within a million per year.

That's a difference of almost 20% and money today is worth more than money tomorrow. Hyman didn't see his first paycheck until what, 23? and as a pro athlete you have about 10 years to make the lion's share of money for the rest of your life. This is his first and last "big" contract, and maybe I'm just poor but $6.5M feels substantial. I'd love Hyman still on this team but I don't begrudge him cashing in for a second.

Not gonna lie I laughed out loud when Kassian came on as the extra attacker. I didn’t think to who else could possibly be out there instead … I just was laughing too hard
It's not unheard of to put a big body that's tough to move in front of the net when the goalies pulled.

They left Pulji on the bench who is both a big body and about 5 times as talented. It was an egregious decision.
Not sure why, perhaps they weren't happy with his play that night or he was up on the next unit.
We've seen the Leafs in the past not have Nylander, etc for example on the ice.

I don't see the big deal.

Wayne Simmonds in his younger days would do that all the time, and do it on the PP as well. In fact that might have been a spot the Leafs could have used Nick Ritchie in had such a situation been reversed and previously.

Its a more effective strategy then say tossing 5-8 Kailer Yamamoto out and into the crease area. IMO

PS. Keep in mind McDavid, and RNH among others usual options who would usually be out there if they were not unavailable. Heck they might even had Tyson Barrie out with the goalie out to generate offense from the defense. Oilers roster was fairly depleted .

"In his younger days" Wayne Simmonds was a 50-60 point player who scored around 30 a year and one of the best power play producers in the league.

Kassian has 17 points the last two seasons and 2 power play points in his 7 years with the Oilers.

And, as mentioned, Puljujarvi, who is 6'4" and has 23 points this year, was sitting on the bench. It wasn't a choice between Kassian and Yamamoto (who, funnily enough, was already on the ice). It was a choice between a big guy who provides offense and a big guy who doesn't provide offense, and they picked the one who doesn't.

There seems to be two types of people, those who think others are stupid for not doing the obvious and those who think they must have had a reason for their choice.

If there's an obvious choice and you go another direction, it's always gonna look like a stupid decisions if it doesn't work out.

Is the glass half full or half empty?

The fact that our Leafs with a full roster, were in that position forced into needing to defending a 1 goal lead against a team missing the NHL's best player in McDavid, spoke more about what kind of poorly played game Leafs had just played overall.

Not gonna lie, that is what I was thinking when watching Oilers pulled their goalie.

Without McDavid, RNH, Barrie and others missing this game shouldn't have come down to that situation in the first place, as opposed who the opposition was tossing out to try and tie it. IMO

Some would think if such an obvious choice is overlooked perhaps we don't have all the information on why the choice was made.

And some people assume the latter when it comes to other teams, and the former when it comes to the Leafs.

100% dumb decisions can be made, Keefe and Dubas have made a ton of them, but it's doubtful they are made without some thought behind it.

I like how you're ok with "Sometimes people make dumb decisions" as long as it means taking a shot at Leafs management.

What? That's a very immature response. I must have had you confused with someone else, I thought you were reasonable.
Carry on, I'll remember next time.

lol, here's Hyman's game last night:

How oh how will we ever replace Zach Hyman?

I'm glad no-one was around to see the tribute for a guy who played 6 seasons for us, never eclipsing 41 points, and left us for the dumpster fire in Edmonton for what probably amounts to somewhere around an additional $0.5-1.0m a year. It was about the money for Zach, he got what he wanted, and now we have a guy we pay less than a million a year who is matching Hyman's productivity. And will almost certainly better than Hyman in the playoffs, who has pulled a complete disappearing act in every single playoff series he's been in.

Good for Zach and his family. He'll retire a rich man.
It definitely was a personal decision you should be mad.

One of Dubas's better moves - no re-signing him

If Winnipeg wins their game in hand and Dallas wins even 2 of their 4 games in hand Edmonton would drop to 4th in the western conference wildcard with three teams LA, SJ and VAN all within 3 points of catching them. They are absolutely free falling
