Definitely seems weird. I don't think there's any chance they actually would prefer him in the AHL. This might be to get him back up to speed, or it might signal an upcoming move

If it isn't cap related, it's likely the flu bug hit him hard and he might require some AHL games before he's up to speed. He's missed a lot of games for just being sick.

It is possible his illness hit him hard and they want to get him back up to speed with the Marlies rather then with the Leafs. Whatever the reason can't see him being down there for an overly long period of time.
