Leafs defense just plain sucks1

I'd argue garbage defense with stellar goal tending means goalies get wornout faster than average in the league.
 
I left for Florida Friday morning and haven’t been paying much attention. Is the Team not ‘ELITE’ anymore?
 
The Leafs don’t give up a ton of shots or high danger scoring chances relative to most teams. They are an above average defensive team but not great or elite.

The goaltending is literally league worst and that is impacting the defense.

It's the goaltenders. I'm not a big fan of expected goals as discussed but as a team stat over a good sample size it can be revealing. Are the last 15 games a good sample? Maybe. Should we go after Fleury, maybe.

Our lottery team level amount of defensive zone giveaways don't impact the goalies?

We're getting below average D right now and whatever is lower than below average for goaltending. The D hasn't been below average all year but they have been for a good stretch now. Goalies are hurting the D more than the D are hurting the goalies, but our D will still run any non elite/ non great goalie out of town.

Not giving up a ton of shots and limiting HDCA/60 is more of a consequence of what we are elite in via our offensive game. Leafs are also elite in defensive zone takeaways which also limits the chance a shot actually happens however the +/- on giveaway versus takeaway is so bad, like non playoff team bad, the goalies heads are spinning the entire time nonetheless. It's a wild adventure there right now.

There is no such thing as having the Leafs amount of defensive zone give aways and calling yourself above average at defence. It was a problem under Babcock and still a problem under Keefe. It's not shocking Andersen is having such an easy time in Carolina. He is a true no.1 that's why he didnt self destruct out right. Took a very long time to finally wear him down and cast him out for good.

Leafs D is elite if you arbitrarily choose which stats count for grading them and then ignore all possible context.

This is the only place in the hockey universe the Leafs D gets spared. Not even the Leafs think their defence is good. They don't even use the stats you guys use to rate their D. You will never have access to the micro stats NHL teams use and the high level context they use to understand them.

The first goal was caused by bad goaltending...the D was expecting Mrazek to punch the puck into the corner with his blocker, not misplay the puck and punch it to his left for an empty net tap in.
 
Toronto is 10 to 1 to win cup....the Rangers are better then them easily. Toronto can't win a aeries..let alone the cup. Keefe is fine..they don't have the team.

I'm sorry but a lot of you keed to give your head a shake. Dubas hasn't addressed our defence? Pretty sure Rielly is the only guy here that he inherited. He has done nothing but address this team defensively.

He has consistently shown himself to be a GREAT general manager aquiring parts that should in theory help this team. And ya know what? Damn near all of them have.

Every time this team has had a rough stretch people want Dubas fired, Keefe replaced, Marner traded, Nylander is a joke, Tavares has fallen off blahh blahh effin blaaaaah.

What happened last time we had a rough stretch? We got past it, like good teams do. A lot of yall ate crow as we absolutely dominated.

I will admit things haven't been good, at ALL lately, and that is putting it generously. But good god are we fans or critics? Have a little faith.

I'm a firm believer in what you put out is what you get back and if we all continue to be negative little $hits about this team we will reap what we sow.

Recognize how far we have come in a few years and appreciate the talent we have drafted and developed.

Quote me on this, we are going deep this year. We have skill, we have heart and believe it or not these boys got jam. Write it down cuz boy when it happens I'm sure you'll ALL be proud.

So lets suck it up and show some faith in our management and our boys! Cuz im 33yrs young and this is the best I've seen.
