This wasn't true last game. Coyotes first goal was very nonchalant D coverage. Galchenyuk could have went into the slot and started doing the Fortnite dance and none of them would have noticed.

I think the D was expecting Mrazek to direct the puck to the side on a routine shot. Not sure how it's on them when the goaltender completely flubbed it.

If the goalies can figure out how to consistently stop the stuff they should stop 100% of the time, then at worst, we should have average goaltending. At that point, things likely won't look nearly as bleak, even if we do have some obvious defensive deficiency.

It's not on them, but it's not an excuse to not even be present. This is the NHL it's inexcusable to just assume a play will go a certain way be it the goalie or the D. It's 2 on 4. That was textbook bad defence. It's exactly as my post above. They're allowed to play like that for some reason just because the goalie is even worse. That's not the kind of team I want nor should you.

Actually, you're supposed to read plays as a D. It helps with zone breakouts, counterattacks, and positioning. In this instance, a routine play should've been near the boards.

It's like when the goaltender is playing the puck behind the net, you expect him to go around the boards rather than give it the opponent for an easy tap in, right? Basically the same idea here.

On the TNT network, Gretzky made a great point -- he said that at this point in the season, teams are starting to get into playoff mode and working on tightening up their systems.

With our team, our systems have been jettisoned into outer space.

I advise you to go and re-watch the goal. There's really no excuse for how they played that. It's 2 on 4.

You're just giving me general theory now. We'll agree to disagree unless you can apply your theory to this specific play. If you are re-watch it first so you don't speak in generalizations.

Lol alright. Ideally, someone runs minor interference on Galchenyuk (and gets away with it) or Dermott executes a timely stick lift.....

But in reality, they still played it fine. Gave them a ridiculously easy shot which you'd gladly allow all night long, assuming your goaltender can make basic saves with rebound control. Even Craig Simpson said, "and Dermott was expecting the puck to be in the corner"

To put into context how great this team is, we have had ONE month where the SV% was above .900 and yet we are still in contention for the Presidents trophy. How in the sweet sassy molassy does that happen?

If Dubas lets this team just limp into the playoffs with out doing something significant to correct what is wrong. I'm done with this team until Keefe and Dubas are gone.

We need two big crease critters that eat opponents when they get near the blue paint. Chara can't skate, can't shoot and cant do much but he is elite at clearing the front of the net. I'd rather have him as our #7 sitting in the box than Dermott as our #7 sitting in the press box.

JT Miller or Josh Andersen on the 2nd line would go a LONG way in making that 2nd line complete.

Case in point on the third goal. Mrazek lets in a stinker and people forget that Sandin made the Gardiner-esque drop-pass to nobody in the dzone that caused the turnover.

There's two problems on that play.

The first is all of our defensemen seem to have the green light to do whatever they want. There's no discipline with those soft reversals and Sandin can be as careless as they come.

Secondly, it wasn't necessarily a catastrophic turnover but Mrazek was definitely not sealing the short side.

I'll throw in a third problem, Rielly looked pretty busy doing nothing pressuring a guy in the corner almost below the blueline there.

I harp on it a lot but the Tavares signing was so bad and will only get worse. It was way too early of a win now move and now he's progressively getting worse and the advertised "second first line" is no longer a thing as for half the season we've been carried by the first line.

These threads are just golden after watching you guys shit on Freddy so much last season, when I was telling you that 1) freddy was dealing with a longtime knee injury most of the season 2) leafs defense is super over rated while the overall focus is offensive puck position 3) this team is the definition of soft to the core.

Freddy must be feeling pretty good putting in a vezina level performance this season while watching the whole leaf fanbase implode along with Campbell (maybe not since hes bff with Matthews)

Scott Mayfield would do wonders to help the crease defense. Unlike Chara he can actually skate and make plays too. But Mayfield seems like a guy Dubas wouldn't care to have at all so it's a pipe dream. I think Dubas is all in on Muzzin coming back and fixing this, but it's a grave mistake having him be the only physical D on the team.

We're probably less than 1 year's time from running another 2 goalies out of Toronto. And if Dubas stays, this horrible cycle repeats itself.

This current team in 2021-22 is on pace to surrender +20 more goals against [252 total], then the 2017-18 record setting team that surrendered 232 total.

Leafs currently rank 16th in goals against which would put then among the lowest of potential playoff teams.

The tandem goalie plan is really starting to show its flaws in terms of Leafs competitiveness.

Kyle Dubas spent $10m in cap space for this year in the off season of that $6.3M (Mrazek & Ritchie) has been a complete waste. For a GM that makes it a point to mention the flat cap every chance he gets he sure doesn't spend dollars wisely. A TOTAL GRIFTER.

The goalie coaches in Toronto have ruined a steady stream of NHL goalies.

Oh it's so much more than assigning all the blame to goalie coaches. This team from top to bottom puts offense first, always, in every situation.

I've said it many times, I think the biggest factor in how goalies eventually break down in Toronto is they are sick of playing in front of guys that do nothing to help them out. Numerous examples over the past X number of years but the trend goes something like: Goalie/team have a rough night out. Few nights later the Leafs get served a weak/struggling team. They pour it on and get a big lead and then, instead of shutting down the opponent and preserving a much-needed comeback, solid confidence-building outing for the goalie they try to pad their stats. Opposing team comes back, scores a few and the steam can be seen coming rising from the Leaf goalie's helmet. Eventually he just says "enough of this crap" and I believe mails it in, counting the days until his contract is up so he can get out of town.

Add to that a GM who the past few off-seasons has seemed primarily obsessed with adding forward depth while ignoring the deficiencies on the blue line (one big exception was signing Brodie - a great signing btw). The Montreal series underlined that need still existed, and yet again Kyle spent his Summer filling up the cap with forward contracts, notably Ritchie who brought a "skillset" that was far less important than firming up the blue line. (Thankfully the other forward signings were good but as we can see, net no gain for this team when the d core and goalies are failing).

Mzarek is brutal and the crying man has fallen apart after a sizzling start but our D is crap as well as our forwards who rather try to pad there stats than help shut down the opposition .

our D corps consists of Rielly/Brodie while the rest are 5-7 D's including Muzzin

I have no idea who he is, which team?

Until Dubas makes changes on the blueline, this team will not go anywhere. Just expect another first round exit. This issue has been ongoing for years and never really addressed. And waiting for often injuried Muzzin to come back to solidify the blue line is not the answer. Liljegren is not an NHL defenseman, but they keep putting him out there. They are running out of time and another first round exit should be the end of Dubas' tenure as the Leafs GM. Keefe can go too
Unfortunately he has to also make changes in net………with basically no cap, space
