I disagree. He's still hitting and playing the way he does. He's had a lot of golden chances lately... just snake bitten.
I agree but snake bitten can be a result of just not being 100%: not quite as sharp or strong as you were a month ago or so.
A player can play the game the same way, but with a slight injury in that results in appearing snake bitten.
So I can agree he's snake bitten, but I'm thinking his fatigue is the cause of it.

It goes back to Maurice Richard in the 1944-45 season. At that time time the season was only 50 games and Richard was able to score 50. Therefore the milestone was established, and to equal or beat it, the next player had to accomplish the feat in a "similar" 50 game season.

*not arguing for this, just trying to explain where it came from
Yes...

Same year:

51 goals in 50 games in this era is just incredible.

The reason the ‘official’ 50 in 50 starts from the beginning of the year goes back to the fact that Richard was the first (and I think only) 50 goal scorer when the season was only 50 games long.

When the season expanded to 60 games and a few players hit 50, the comment was always ‘yeah but he didn’t get 50 in 50.’

Bossy did it, which was a huge deal, then this Gretzky guy did it in 39 or something, but that was the live puck era. Still incredible.

But the theory is if seasons were 50 games long like in the 50’s, if you didn’t hit 50 in your first 50 you didn’t get there at all.

Nice to see Auston outstrip the Rocket on his way to the Rocket against the Rocket’s old team on a Saturday night though.
I can appreciate the original idea of 50 in 50 and Gretzky doing it in 39 is amazing and will probably never be touched. However 50 in 50 to me is 50 in 50. Matthews is doing it in an entirely different era. It's pretty hard to compare it. Either way anytime a player does something special like this you have to tip your hat.

The thing that's funny to me is for once something really special like this.... and he's a Leaf. Other fan bases can say what they want about hating our fan base but there is some cringe worthy posts out there about Matthews right now.

Like someone said what's important is he's taking it in stride and keeping it about the team and winning. If he can keep scoring like this in the post season that'll go a long way to breaking through in the 1st round.

All true and while I understand that the 1st 50 games of the season is what people focus on, I don't see why measuring the last 50 games of the season (when goals are harder to come by) isn't just as valid.

And to be fair to guys like Richard and Bossy and whoever else, getting 50 in 50 is easier anyway considering OT goals.

I am honestly liking Matthews more because he's just zoned in about the team goal not just the goals he's able to produce.
Me too. He seems to be 100% focused on the task at hand and is understanding that team accomplishments >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> individual accomplishments. It's a team game after all and that's why individual awards shine so much brighter when the team has success as well.

Absolutely. It's starting to feel like this is the year where Matthews puts the team on his back and carries it places. Considering it's a pretty darn good rest of the team as well, if the goaltending can manage to be even just average, we have a shot at winning not just one round but going all the way. He is the proverbial man on a mission!

I’m really liking this kid in nets
No superstar but I’m very comfortable with him in nets and he’s just starting out
If he’s not the started then 10000% a keeper for backup

Mrazek can def go

Want to see his work last night watch the condensed game.
He was very good.
Not sure you can fault him for the goals against.

Man, I don’t know why, but Erik Kallgren plays the position much like I remember Eddie Belfour playing the position. Whenever Kallgren plays, I’ll get glimpses and it just reminds me of Belfour.

(and I hope it doesn’t need to be said, no I’m not saying Kallgren is as good as Belfour or anything like that - simply play style/stance)

Why is Lilly not playing tonight?
I guess Holl was just Holl not the good Holl that sometimes showed up.
Holl played quite well, even the goal he was on for he made the right play by taking Caulfield completely out of the play starting at the crease and moved him about 5 feet to the side and neutralized him, Edmundson scored because 2 Leafs forwards were puck watching Suzuki going around the net. Suzuki mad a great pass threading it through Gio and right onto Edmundson's tape who was sliding in through the slot. He made excellent plays on the blueline along with Gio which led directly to Matty's 57th and 58th goals.

If we can move Mrazek without adding a sweetener and have Kallgren and Woll jockey for backup, that would ideal.

Campbell should be an easier resign now at a manageable cap hit.

Pretty clear someone has to go on defence this summer. I’m hoping we resign Boosh and are able to recoup a solid draft pick for Holl. Liljegren has earned a full-time spot in the lineup.

Obviously time will tell but it sure feels like Marner will be on a completely different level for these playoffs. He’s been really making some noticeable big hits lately. These guys are all playing possessed it seems. Keep these goalies healthy!!

Good Luck.
Someone will take him for the much lauded future considerations when they miss out on the few goalies available this summer. There’s going to be more teams looking to plug holes than guys available. At worst it’ll be a misfit for misfit but someone that is either cap neutral (ltir) or in a different position (maybe a middle 6W who doesn’t fit on their team)
I can’t see a 10 game bad stretch during an injury riddled season completely offsetting a decade of track record.

Mrazek has a lot of street credit around the league - he's been around forever and goalie coaches recognize his talent. He'll be traded without any incentive.

If you guys are right why not just keep him ? It is not like we cant use a good goalie, especially if Jack walks.

Seriously nobody is going out on a limb and taking his $4m owing unless they send back a bad contract or Leafs sweeten. Sorry not buying it.

Looking at the Holtby trade, I think some team will take Petr without sweetener but it might only cost the other team a 6th rounder or so.
