I remember people saying the Leafs played in an easy division last season and we’d be eaten alive in the extremely tough Atlantic. Look at the standings with 10 games to go…we’re a damn good team. 51 goals in 50 games in this era is just incredible.

The reason the ‘official’ 50 in 50 starts from the beginning of the year goes back to the fact that Richard was the first (and I think only) 50 goal scorer when the season was only 50 games long.

When the season expanded to 60 games and a few players hit 50, the comment was always ‘yeah but he didn’t get 50 in 50.’

Bossy did it, which was a huge deal, then this Gretzky guy did it in 39 or something, but that was the live puck era. Still incredible.

But the theory is if seasons were 50 games long like in the 50’s, if you didn’t hit 50 in your first 50 you didn’t get there at all.

I was just going to post this. He didn't allow any BS around the net. Anderson actually looked intimidated and skated away. The psychological edge his presence brings can't be underestimated.

Yup, all true. But as someone on the main boards pointed out, Richard's 50 was also 50 in the last 50 games of the season so who's to say that the 1st 50 counts more than the last 50? Goal scoring also decreases as teams ramp up the D as the playoffs approach so 50 in the last 50 is actually more difficult to accomplish and arguable more noteworthy, so assuming Matthews ends up with 50 in his last 50, you can always throw that into these discussions. I think he has a shot at 60 in his last 60, not sure how many times that's been done before but damn, that would really be something!

It has probably been mentioned already a time or two, but if we go deep into the playoffs, the most important trade made may very well be the Giordano and Blackwell trade. Huge improvement with our d and 4th line.

It goes back to Maurice Richard in the 1944-45 season. At that time time the season was only 50 games and Richard was able to score 50. Therefore the milestone was established, and to equal or beat it, the next player had to accomplish the feat in a "similar" 50 game season.
