I doubt full blown shut down. NHL will not do another season of losing revenue and the players will not agree to prorated contracts again. But cancel the games if necessary. It’s just hockey!
Considering my job depends on hockey being played, I can be a bit upset about this. On top of that, I don't want another shutdown of everything in general given how mild Omicron is based on reports. It's all a complete overreaction so far.

This is ridiculous. The new strain is mild but contagious. So we are going to shut everything down again over this?

I keep hearing it’s mild, it may be, but based on what? South Africa has a younger population and way more natural immunity considering they barely had access to vaccines and way more people caught Covid as a result. It’s always been ‘mild’ amongst a younger population.

Do these people take care of themselves?

There's definitely a segment of the population who'll latch onto "if it didn't kill the person, it wasn't that bad". This virus is effecting people in different ways. Some have shown very mild symptoms but are still feeling the respiratory effects months later, among other potentially permanent side effects. That's what scares me the most. I'm under 40 and this thing is highly unlikely to kill me, but the permanent health effects could last decades, we really don't know. Let's not pretend all those who survived polio were running marathons months after infection.

Two weeks post pause we will be right back here. The variant is too contagious unfortunately - mild or not. Genuinely think the season itself is in danger of a longterm pause post Holidays.
Interesting that the NFL league is right now allowing (traditional positive covid tested) players to return to the games sire. They are using a different type of test system, that shows if a player is even able to spread it anymore. Espn link New NFL COVID rules allow faster player return

"It's not about loosening our standards," Sills said. "If anything, we're just bringing a higher degree of precision in measuring ourselves against a more precise ruler."

There is no change to the rules for unvaccinated players, who will continue to be tested daily and must stay away from the team facility for at least 10 days before they can be cleared to return after a positive test.

NHL can't because of the border. You need a test to enter Canada. The positives will be identified and then everyone on the team is a close contact that will be required to get a test if teams have any desire to have fans in the building.

I'm not trying to be doom and gloom but I don't see how they finish this season without a bubble and no fans - or lobbying for very specific exceptions from the Canadian government, rightly or wrongly.

If the past is any indication, the wave will last roughly 5 weeks, and once it starts to drop, hopefully it’ll drop fast.
There were many here that wanted schools to pause opening the first week in August, and low and behold, cases and hospitalizations plummeted as soon as school started.

Almost every player with covid right now didn't even know they had it, the others had sniffles. I think they'll be ok...

Inflamed organs are a common side effect of Covid even in young, healthy individuals, and often goes unreported as a viral related event. It is especially impactful on those with diabetes which suggests it multiplies rapidly in a sugar rich environment, so a player who goes on a bender, and they do, can potentially increase their risk to concerning levels regardless of their age. This has remained true even with the new "milder" variant.

On top of that, I don't want another shutdown of everything in general given how mild Omicron is based on reports. .

It has only proven to be "mild" in younger, healthier, highly vaccinated populations. The unvaccinated have still shown signs of suffering ill effects especially if the virus is passed on from someone who is also unvaccinated, so this is less of a "this is a mild variant of the virus" and more "it's more likely to be a mild variant".

Yes, but like you read also, it says clearly in the same article that the same players who give a positive (traditional) covid test, can still return to the game. Reads right in the article. Interesting to me. Better quote the whole post next time sire.

Here: "
In creating the new return-to-play protocols, the NFL and NFLPA focused on a new metric that measures the viral load of a player, known as the "cycle threshold" (CT). In essence, the CT value can measure whether a player is still contagious, even if in some cases he would still test positive on a traditional test.
That testing can begin as soon as one day after the initial positive and could significantly shorten the amount of time a vaccinated player spends away from the team facility."

Selfishly I wanted this game to play as well, but can't have players, trainers, or coaches getting the sniffles. The most important thing to consider is that we all continue nodding our heads, doing what we're told, take our boosters and keep getting the pharmaceutical companies CEO's wealth beyond anyone's imaginations

I wasn't debating the article or your position ...

I was clarifying that they aren't just ignoring infections, and if you aren't vaccinated those changes don't do anything for you.

NFL is also changing when games can be played, and have postponed games.
