Two weeks post pause we will be right back here. The variant is too contagious unfortunately - mild or not. Genuinely think the season itself is in danger of a longterm pause post Holidays.

Shit, have a few weeks off work and will likely only get one game in over that time. The league still hasn't learned how to nip this in the bud. Instead of shutting down 1 or 2 teams temporarily, now half the league, if not more, is going to be shut down until new years. The short-term greed is so incredibly stupid.

1 game between December 16th and December 27th. And that game is up in the air right now depending on further positive tests. I'm going to be going through serious leafs withdrawal lol

It'll probably be a stoppage into spring, these numbers aren't going down until then.

The good new is allegedly 1 month into Omicron in South Africa and their deaths from covid have plummeted.

If the Leafs just skipped EDM, they probably don't get Covid.
If not EDM, it probably would have been somewhere else.

I don't think you can change the divisions mid season
In theory they can do whatever they want -- change divisions, split season with a return to the bubble divisions, take a pause, plow through despite all the positive tests.

Last two seem most likely, but who knows?

I hope the players are okay. NHL should have paused the season before it got this out of hand.

I don't expect we'll see much NHL hockey the rest of 2021.

I can almost guarantee it won't be. NHL isn't about to give up any revenue. Unless you think the NHL will be the only league to cancel their season?

It’s in the PA and the NHL interest to keep playing, since the players wouldn’t accept prorated last year, there is a lot of back pay to make up.

This is ridiculous. The new strain is mild but contagious. So we are going to shut everything down again over this?

I doubt full blown shut down. NHL will not do another season of losing revenue and the players will not agree to prorated contracts again. But cancel the games if necessary. It’s just hockey!

They did pause the New York Islanders under similar circumstances about a month ago, so this isn't surprising. With so much money on the line, I don't think we'll be seeing a full shut down, especially if the other leagues are motoring ahead. Axe the Olympics and soldier on I suppose.

They didn’t agree to prorated contracts last time, they did defer 10% of salary, but they’re getting it back

Bummer. Just hope those in the protocol are able to produce some negative testing in time to spend Christmas with their families.

Have to wonder now if the game on the 23rd even takes place. Will depend on if anymore Leafs have to enter the protocol I guess.

Succession and NHL it is then ;-)
