That's why you need to watch the games to give informed opinions, too many people follow the NHL by stats and standings and stats don't tell you everything and as in this case are not even right.
Two more stats that can be very deceiving if you don't watch the game are possession and zone time.

For one thing, they can be very score dependant. Up a couple of goals, you may be happy to dump from center and sit back, giving you poor possession and zone time.

If the other team spends 30 seconds in your end, moving the puck around the perimeter and taking a few low percentage shots, then you break out, make two quick passes and score, what do you get?

Possession time: them - 30 seconds, you - 5.
Zone time: them - 30 seconds, you - 3.
Shots: them - 3, you - 1.
Goals: them - 0, you - 1.

Just looking at the stats, boy, were we ever lucky to win that game!

i think some fans have been burned by the Leafs so much that they have a hard time believing in them. They feel it’s a matter of time before they let you down again. They don’t want to fall for it.

I think if the Leafs can win a playoff round this year the negativity will not be as bad. Of course there will always be negativity but a playoff win can help start to erase the past.
So true.

Like if you're a Leafs fan that just got created in Matthews and Marner era, you should be over the moon, even with all the disappointments.

Me...I'm from the 70s lmao. Missed out on all the cups, saw a bunch of shitty teams, but also witnessed a lot of really great moments. Still waiting for that greatest moment though.

That was pretty bad.
That Durzi kid looks pretty good.
Ya I agree, I always liked the Durzi pick when we made it. I thought there was real NHL upside from the get go. Hadn't really set the world on fire in the A in years past so I thought maybe I was wrong on him. And then when I saw on twitter that he was going to play his 1st game against us (of course), I kinda looked deeper into his stats this year. Great start in Ontario, albeit a bit bloated by the 7pts in his last 2 games.

I will say if you're looking at pt totals only, he looked good yesterday, but he finished the night dash 2. One goal of which was almost directly his fault by not getting the puck through when you have a forward covering your other D. I actually felt bad for him because I think that was his first shift in the show lol. Never a good thing to see a kid start his career with a minus.

My assessment of Durzi thereafter was pretty positive. I think early on it was just jitters, which is totally understandable. You could tell the second he scored he thought he was 2014 PK Subban, which was cool to see. I think his footspeed coupled with his offensive instincts might hold him back a bit. He made a handful of plays that seemed to catch him out of place, and without the footspeed to get back into a strong position it left his team vulnerable. To me he's like a shittier version of Liljegren. I hope him well in LA, but I don't think we gave up a future top pairing guy IMO. Unless he improves his skating and defensive game. Because his offense won't be good enough to offset that deficiency. I'll still pull for him though. The trade seems to have worked out well for both teams

It did work out well but it seems the Leafs won it initially but now it seems to be sliding back in LA's direction. Muzzin has really regressed this year, looks really old.
Plus side to Durzi is the right hand shot, Liljegren is quite a bit better at the moment though.

If Durzi does end up turning into a decent NHLer it makes Dubas and his scouting team look better.
I believe Durzi is part of the 1st draft Dubas took over so we are starting to see his how his draft picks are turning out.

Yep, looks like a solid pick I wasn't implying otherwise.

Without reading the topic so far. Just finished watching the game and it was a very good one from the Leafs. Both depth and star scoring and they could easily have reached double figures. I really liked the hustle and hard work. Especially the fourth line.

Few takeaways:

There seemed to be lot of Leafs-fans in the stands

Wayne Simmonds has been great lately

What has to happen for Ritchie to score a goal?

Hopefully David Kämpf won't be out for too long. Looked nasty.

TNT Commentary is not very good. It took them five minutes to realise that

John Tavares had deflected the puck in the net even though he was congratulated by all his team mates.

It also took an interruption by Don Koharski to mention that the hit on Kämpf should have been an illegal hit to the head. And that Kämpf had not returned to the game.

Happy to see Michael Bunting and Jason Spezza score goals

The chase by Nylander. Wow.

First penalty kill was sensational, but conceding two powerplay goals in the rest of the game is not great. Off course the ex-Leafs-prospects nets a goal

In general for now the full amount of points on the road trip.

Thats a possibility but nylander also takes Keefes word to heart very seriously....so he's prolly still reeling in from the last commentary because it seemed to have given a nosedive right after. It always happened in the AHL, and then he gets better again.
Keefer needs to keep his trap shut .. there is not 1 single hockey player ever who goes a whole season without a bad game .. when Willy has 1 it gets blown way da h*ll out of proposition .. Mitch has many many many stinkers in playoffs and to start this year and he did not sit 1 friggin shift .. it is da double standard which is irritating to players .. I don't like it .. coaches need to be much smarter .. my motto is what you do for 1 you should do for all otherwise it leads to favoritism

Matthews had a few solid hits last night. But then I checked the official NHL stats, and … he was credited with zero hits. Who counts these things?

Lol. He had a checking from behind penalty!

Nylander never gets credit for a hit. No matter what he does. Granted he doesn't hit people very hard but he does take people to the boards quite often.

Leafs on general don't get a lot of credit for hits.

I'm loving the compete level on this team.

That Nylander back check and stole the puck cleanly, from a player who isn't slow. Impressive

I'm a little disappointed in Muzzin and Holl something is just off with the two of them. Considering how well we are playing defensively. They must be doing something right, I'm just not seeing it maybe?

As the goals will come.

Soup has me sold. His happiness and the way he competes you can't help but cheer for the guy. He fits in so perfect with this Leaf team.

Is that what their jerseys looked like last night? Was had to see them through the glare of the helmets.
No they wore the 90s throwbacks that Gretz and co made famous.
